4231: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young; McTominay, Garner; Pereira, Mata, James; Rashford.

It's a weird. Despite our team being far from ideal to nurture our talents into the first team they are the only ones I want to see. I really, really don't want to see Mata, Matić, Young and Lingard getting minutes. I know it can end up hurting the young guns in the long run to grow up in such a dysfunctional team. Tricky one.

Said it before, but all a team needs to do against us is remain compact at the back and we're done. I expect Newcastle to do exactly that.

If we play Martial we win. Without him scoring is going to be difficult.

Newcastle are really poor but I'm not sure what Brucie will do, he might look at the game as a chance to lift his team, attack us and try to get that home crowd behind them, if he does we might catch them on the counter, but he could possibly think bunkering in and playing for a point is the way to go, in which case I think it'll be a draw.

Axel not starting last night gives me hope that he might partner Maguire in this game, as the one threat Newcastle could have is big Joelinton up against Lindelof. In midfield I'm hoping Pogba is fit, if not I don't know who we play, neither Fred or Matic are worth a game, but this is not really the environment to throw Garner in, maybe it's time for Ole's "Rojo as a DM" plan. :D

    We will lose, no doubt.
We could get a brave 0-0

Way too many foreigners. Get Grant, Gomes and Greenwood in there!

It doesn't matter. Our midfield will be uninspired and our attack will lack movement and cohesion.

Reckon we can scrape our way to a 1-0, but it won't be pretty.
who do you think is going to get a shot at goal... or will it be an o.g.?

What makes anyone think Lindelöf won't start, when he's started all the league games?
    Tuanzebe not playing midweek?

He played the entire game versus Alkmaar. It's just a hunch he'll probably start.

Ole seems to have big faith in Andreas Pereira, but I don't see what it is he must be seeing, unfortunately. I'll be surprised if he doesn't start, especially with the injury to Lingard. I'm really hoping to see a change in formation / shape as this diamond or 4231 with Pogba deeper just clearly isn't working. We don't necessarily look defensively sound even though we don't concede many goals, but we barely look like scoring which needs to be rectified more. We needs points points and performances, the only way to get this is to look at trying to get on the front foot, play faster, take some risks and try much harder to score. I feel like a 433 with Pogba given more of a licence to go forward will be of huge benefit, but it seems like it won't be happening. At the moment, I fancy Mata to start long with Andreas, McTominay, Pogba, Rashford and James in more of a diamond shape. I'd rather we just try to use Fred in kind of an Ander Herrera role, with McTominay replacing Matic and Pogba being the Pogba he was when Ole first took over. It feels like we had our biggest success with 433 (Matic, Herrera, Pogba midfield) but then injuries forced Ole's hand and he's adopted the diamond and then 4231 with round pegs in square holes - isn't working. I'd like to see this, but I doubt we will:

    de Gea
    Dalot Lindelof Maguire Tuanzebe
    Fred McTominay Pogba
    James Greenwood Rashford

I expect Young, Andreas, and Mata to play instead of Dalot/Tuanzebe, Fred, and Greenwood. Although, if Martial or Shaw are fit, they might be thrown straight back in. I feel like risk of a recurrence of injury would be worth it for Ole as we need a win, especially away from home, and we have the international break to recover anyway. We need a win, I'll take any win, even with a bad performance. This game will probably be extremely difficult as Newcastle just got hit for five and will be desperate to keep the score down. Even with our poor form and lack of creativity, they'd probably bite your hand off for a 0-0 right now heading into the break.

Looking at Newcastle's league form this season.

Lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal. A game that Arsenal only got 8 shots on goal and 2 on target

Lost 3-1 away to Norwich. Norwich beat Man City 3-2 so a tough place to go.

Beat Spurs away 1-0 in a game that Spurs only got two shots on target

Drew 1-1 at home to Watford. Had to come back from a goal down and Watford only got 3 shots on target.

Lost away to Liverpool 3-1. Man United probably would do no better in that fixture lets be fair

Drew at home to Brighton 0-0 awful game with few chances on target for either side.

Lost 5-0 to Leicester City. The match 1-0 and they totally collapsed when they went down to 10 men.

Conclusion for Sunday is i think a game similar to their St James park matches v Watford and Brighton with a draw a high possibility. Any type of win for Man United would be most grateful but Newcastle winning their first home game of the season will only add further to United's early season woes.

    Back row. Singing.
We’ll sneak a win a 1-0 win and a few posters will come back on telling everyone how knee jerk their negative comments were, how the masterplan is off and running, how Rashford will be a superstar. All will be forgotten and everything will be rosy again.

With everyone out hurt or sick, I don't like the lineup possibilities... here's my guess:

    DDG
    Tuanzebe - Maguire - Lindelof - Young
    Pereira - McTominay
    James - Lingard - Chong
    Rashford
Ole loves his 4-2-3-1, even though it hasn't worked since week 1.

If we come out of our funk, 2-0. Newcastle's given up 13 goals while only scoring 4. I think even we can look good against them.

Maybe something crazy to get out of the funk:
    De Gea
    Dalot Axel Maguire Williams
    Pereira McTominay Gomes
    Rashy Greenwood James

I think we'll get at least one shot on goal!

The amount of sick and injured players is insane. Has Germany invaded England again??
    Wan-Bassaka
    Jones
    Lingard
    Pogba
    Martial
    Bailly
    Shaw

And some are ALWAYS or almost always injured: Bailly Jones Shaw and Martial

I think we will win this. Newcastle are the perfect team to play right now, they can't score and are in worse form than we are.

Calm down, a shot on goal is something we have to build towards, remember: you can't recycle possession if you shoot.

Really? Can they get a shot on goal? If so we ought to be concerned.
Hadn't thought about that... Doesn't matter our recent performances have been good and the boys are playing great, just listen to Ole. Momentum is on our side, we just held AZ to a scoreless draw, and they scored 3 against Feyenoord! Newcastle shouldn't be a problem.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking it.
I’m quite happy to admit it.

Every fluke win - rare as they are - just sustains a crap management team.

Thing is, even if we switch manager, the same lack of infrastructure is going to be our undoing.

The whole situation is nothing short of a disgrace.

I don’t want to think about it. I hope my cable goes out that day.
It will be fun. Now any sort of expectations are out of the way, I will watch the apparent 'progress' that we are making.

Liverpool vs Manchester United was a special fixture last season given the aftermath of the game. Expecting something similar to happen this time around too.
