We can't build up from back, stop trying. James fantastic, Mata good. Rashford, SMT, Pogba, Pereira all very poor. Midfield is non existent.
McTominay has kept things ticking nicely, assist for the goal, had a great ball for AWB where he should have hit the target, made a crucial block. Some positional problems, but he's growing fast into his role. The better of the two midfielders today for sure.

Pogba has to man up. Atleast do the basics right. Ole needs to play pogba in a more advanced role. Rashford has taken Lingard's role of being crap. I still don't know what periera offers. Average player who should be a bench player.
Yup he doesn't want to play deep and will always put in these type of games there.

We really shouldn't have got rid of Herrera but what you gonna do.

So-so. There's goals still to come, here, we dont look comfortable.

But feck me. Dan James. Take a bow, lad. He's taking the PL like a duck to water, what an absolute screamer!

Yeah, normally I defend Pogba but he's been unacceptable today. Doesn't seem to be match sharp at all which is a bit bizarre.
Think he's struggling with the lack of space and playing so deep. But some of his passing is inexcusable

How on earth does Periera play for Manchester United?! Looks like someone who probably looks skilful when it's juts him and the ball but is rendered completely useless when there's actuality a tight match of football taking place.

He's a poor passer. He's weak. He's slow. His dribbling is good until pressurised at which point it does nothing. His awareness is nonexistent.

Deserved lead and fine goal by James. 4 shots on target within 20 minutes today that's more than in 90 minutes v Palace last week. Gone into our shell somewhat since then and haven't created much. Pogba so frustrating too watch in that half, someone needs to tell him to stop doing those silly flicks, turns and focus more on his passing.

Yep. I wonder if anyone is available in January. They don't have to be fancy, just fecking solid. It was a big mistake not getting someone for this role.
At the moment i would even try Fred there.. Fred might lose the ball sometimes but so will Pogba and atleast Pogba will be able to get forward more that way.

Yeah I think he's been ok. Loved his straitjacket technique for that block too.

Also considering I've been moaning of Mata's lack of pace/mobility Rio's just shown what a good run he makes for James for the goal. Top effort Juan.
He's been our most influential player in the final third. His pace/lack of mobility is not that much of an issue as his excellent positional sense and awareness make up for it.

Oh the Pogba conundrum. On his day great but usually good. Today he should be hooked at HT. Absolute garbage.
Pogba either needs to play high, or he needs Lingard to do his pressing to make space.

Playing Mata at #10 does Pogba no favours.

That’s it basically. Southampton are pressing high and we’re moving the ball too slowly in the back. He and mctominay need to push up a bit higher and let the defence pass it out.

All this pogba moaning is getting tiresome tbh. People are literally sitting there waiting to have a go. Non stop. Players/teams have off games deal with it :/

What is Mata's supposedly fatal flaw? I see his speed get mentioned a lot, but is that really it? I feel that there's enough pace in the rest of the squad to compensate for that. We need more intelligent footballers within the starting 11.
His general lack of physicality, both in terms of pace and strength. It really is a big flaw.

On the other hand, he has great strengths too in terms of touch, intelligence and movement.

It's all about picking which games to use him in, I think.

James has really been the only bright spark in the front 6 in all honesty

    big improvement required
Not true, Mata has linked the play well and shown great football intelligence throughout the half. McTominay has hit some excellent first time balls forward from midfield too.

Mctominat average but one nice run
    Periera useless
    Rashford disappointing

    James excellent
    AWB solid
    CBs good
    Mata good

Is how I'd sum up our performance.

    Bring in greenwood.

Yeah, I don't want to compare them. Rashford is a much better player, but he does have spells of looking equally frustrating.
Agreed. We had a chance where he easily took a player on, then decided to go alone instead of playing James in through on goal. That play seems to happen every match. Then his passes out of play on counters under no pressure. It's the simple things like that which bothers me. If he improved that, he would be a world beater.

Totally agree, and I've been saying this for years now. Don't know how he's still at United.

When Martial is fit we should consider dropping Rashford. He don't really excel in anything.

Mata is looking better than before because Southampton are playing high press game throwing bodies in united half leaving space behind. Mata excels only when given space. You meet tight opponent and he scatters all over as his ball control is poor and he can't pass through which is must for any no. 10. He and Lingard are only a makeshift solution until we find a real nom 10.

De Bruyn, David and Bernardo Silver don’t have pace. They have intelligence and technique, Mata is the closest player we have to that. Play him central, he’ll pick the right passes, keep possession, and even when things fasten up during counters he won’t let us down because of his understanding of the game and ability to play quick passes.

Yeah, it’s weird because he can strike the ball so well but anything else is like a mental block.

Yeah the Pogba bashing is tiresome. People have their minds up already, so just wait for any mistake

Rather him than Lingard to be honest.
