I dont know why people are still thinking of Axel when he is very very raw and lacks maturity and confidence.
Didn't we all see what happened to him tonight. He didn't like being pressed at all. In fact he got nervous and his lack of communication with both Fred and Maguire was so evident.
I am not against him. I just think that he needs time before we start trusting him in difficult high press games
I very much doubt it he is raw. I think he is already a refined footballer capable of playing at the top level, but like you said, he lacking maturity and form.

I agree though, Southampton might be too much of a task for him.

We have to build the team for our best player, Bruno looks more lively and prolific with Cavani. Van de Beek is the player to counter Southampton's high pressing game, his movement and passing ability will create more space for others.

    Cavani
Van de Beek - Fernandes - Rashford
    Fred - McTominay
    Telles Maguire Lindelof Wan Bissaka
    De Gea

Don't we need to rotate? Cavani, what I like is that he runs off the ball and create space for Martial, Rashford and Bruno.
But we do need to think about rotation, meaning that I think it would make sense for Greenwood to be present.

VdB, Matic and James to help as subs when we are winning to see the game out. I believe we can win, again, it's a matter of energy level and it's pretty clear we are recovering the fitness slowly but surely.

Fred Pogba and Matic can't start this game. Fred and Pogba will lose possession clumsily due to their organised high press and Matic can't match their energy. Pogba too again. I'd go for this

    DDG
    Awb Lindelof Maguire Telles
    Mctominay VdB.
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Martial
I think we have a squad with variety of skillets that all Ole has to do mainly is get the right 11 able to counter the opponents style of play and motivate their asses

if I see Pogba, Matic and mata starting this game I’m not even going to bother watching, the team should be the exact same.

maybe Greenwood at RW and move Rashford to the left and if cavani can do it he should be our 9, I’m sick of martial standing around doing nothing.

We may rotate next month, it's important to gain confidence in this games. We couldn't beat them last season, so it won't be an easy fixture for us.

Hoping that Wan-Bissaka & Lindelof are OK for this one.

I expect that Fred & McTominay to start in midfield, probably a front four of Mata, Bruno, Martial, and Rashford. I'd hope that it's Greenwood over Mata though.

Lets play football. Stop with that 2dmc nonsense. Same team as it was in CL.
Having said that, i expect to see McT-Fred combo again. Maybe even James.

    Southampton are our cryptonite unfortunately.

I'd like to see the same team again for consitency but I suspect he will go for the safer choice of Fred/Mctominay in midfield as we know that works well.

Not sure if Cavani will be able to start another 90 minutes quite so soon.

I’d like to see Donny again against Southampton and Cavani, Telles. Probably even go with the exact same team as last night, first time in ages I thought that’s the real United let’s keep it up...

I'd love to see the same front 4, but can't see Cavani starting after playing 90 minutes last night.

If he's going to bring an attacker in for him it needs to be Greenwood rather than Mata or James.

I can see Axel (as suspended for CL and we have defensive injuries), Greenwood, Matic and possibly Williams all coming in with Lindelöf, Martial, Fred and AWB all going out. Can't imagine Pogba and VDB playing together unless Bruno is out so one will play this game and the other against PSG I should imagine.

Fred is not a DM when he plays with Scott. And he guarantees a good energy so it can be good for us.

VdB and Fred is a fifa combination that works against very weak teams. Any good team will punish us in that setup.

Wow, some on here making out Southampton as prime Barca.

They should have lost to Wolves in all honesty. Good as they are, we have players to make them worry more.

If Cavani come through OK, I'd like to see him start. Offers an intelligent foil to the pace of Rashford and Martial. DvDB is an interesting one for me. I'd like to see Fred and Bruno but whether having Donny in there makes us more open...don't know.

Having said that, I bet Pogba plays

Come on Adam, the last time they beat us was 2016. We draw a lot with them, doesn't make them 'Kryptonite'

And they're a lot better than what they were last year. Their pressing style is our weakness, just like Brighton.

Their midfield is very combatative... Think we need McT and Fred for this one.

Harsh on VDB, but there's always Paris on Wednesday.

I’m going for a narrow victory 1-0 or 2-1. we have the better players, just need to turn up which we seem to do away from home. Southampton had a good start but so did Everton.

Would rather go the other way round. VDB this weekend. Fred'n'McT for Paris.

Same team as last night please! We need to form partnerships with those players. The more they play, the better that formation will become with those players. The addition of Cavani gives us a striker who really leads the line and VDB makes our passing so much more incisive and quick. This is the team we need to gel. We might lose a few points along the way compared to playing fred/mct but I believe this is the type of United team we should be striving for.

I hate to be a negative but i think we'll lose this one. The saints are in form and they seem a bogey team for us anyway.

Assuming no injuries, only change from last night should be Mason for Martial and switch Rashford to the left.

They're at the top of the table for a reason. They're a very hard working team that press non stop, we won't find it easy that's for sure.

The only bonus is Danny Ings isn't fit.

You might be expecting an easy win but no doubt will be the first to complain when we don't get a result :)

Never said anything about easy win but not giving them too much respect. People seem to be running for their brown trousers right now

Our upcoming PL fixtures are tricky to say the least... In December we're playing - West Ham, Man City, Leeds, Leicester and Wolves... Plus Everton in the Cup and RB and PSG in the CL.

Only "easy" game we have is Sheffield United.

I think setting your expectations is the correct thing to do. We won’t be winning this by 2/3 goals im sure of that. Perhaps you forgot how they ran us ragged just a few months ago!

Utd will play from the back and play into Southampton's hands. It's so obvious.

This is where Ole lacks that knowledge. I can see him saying " we are Utd and shouldn't change for any team".

Slight exaggeration. We were deservedly 1-0 down but then deservedly 2-1 up and it could easily have been more. Luke Shaw going off and us down to 10 men made a difference. All in all 2-2 was fair

This is logic which i never understand. Shouldn't be opposite? That we play with our creative players and that they think how to match this? Midfield (on paper) is strongest part of our squad and we should start using it. I respect Saints but bloody hell, if we will adapt our lineup and tactics to Saints then feck everything

Well our creative players could struggle if they're not winning the battle in the middle. Also our defense just looks better when McT and Fred are in front of it. Maybe that combo would be better suited against PSG as @Gambit said above - which is fair enough.

Also teams should always be adapting/preparing for any opposition... Saints for example press high and press well, if we don't prepare/adapt for this then that would be pretty foolish no?

I'd play McTominay and have VDB on the bench. VDB did well, but we were so open.
Against Southampton's high press, we can't afford to leave any gaps in midfield. It has to be Fred-McTominay in the middle. None of the other CM options are suited to this game. It's an area where we have to strengthen in the summer.
Agreed. We were fortunate that the opposition didn't have their finishing boots on last night as they were cutting us open with relative ease. I don't think we'd get away with being that open here.
