Not surprised. Jose has mailed it in for the league, which is fine, all things considered. Expect Spurs to dominate the second half as United will just turtle up to avoid maximum damage.

Just win the EL and try for the league next season. These last 3 league matches will all be terrible viewing for the fans, but whatever.

Why have we got our two centre mids man marking their attacking mids?

Just play them zonally, for God sake. Two banks of four. If they run off the ball, then one of the centre backs or full backs can track them.

Worryingly it is our defenders (CB'S) who have performed the worst. The other players like Rooney are playing because it gives other a rest for the EL, whereas this CB pairing will be our CB pairing in the final. :nervous:

I think Martial has put in a commendable effort and Bailly has looked great. The rest of the players (excluding DDG) have ranged from anonymous to laughable. I honestly think I'd rather have a retired Paul Scholes in midfield than Wayne Rooney.

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. After spending millions and millions each year. Although I quite like Tuanzebe. The other 2 just have to leave. Carrick is done at the highest level. Rooney has been for 4 years.
I'd give carrick one more year. have him on the bench as we did with paul scholes in his last year. bring on when games are won -- if we are ever in that position again! but the starter in that position must be world-class and the rumours about dier feel me with dread cos he isn't!

Now while you are right in some aspects. That comment smacks of knee jerk reaction-ism which has become all too common on these forums.

He had a large squad, all but 4 of them not his! Injuries have been as a result of competing on 4 fronts, unlike some teams we didn't throw games. I don't know where buying more players would have helped.

We can only buy in Jan and Aug. We didn't have the injuries then. The squad players like Shneiderlein couldn't be expected to sit on the bench all season

What, not preparing in the most physical league in the world is knee jerk?:rolleyes:.It's been our achilles heel for more time then i can recall, SAF having to play CM in CB, LVG injury crisis and now this. Injuries are going to happen, period. He should've known as he's no stranger to the Prem, unlike VG. Should have bought accordingly at the start of the season. We needed a complete overhaul last year for almost 3 seasons running. That much was obvious to the casual football observer. What Mou bought was just a patch up and didn't solve the root of the problem, too many average players in the squad.

Having more players would have allowed us to maintain the quality of the first team squad when vital players are out injured, giving us a chance to compete or give us an extra dimension in changing game plans where we needed a Plan B. That could have helped massively in our draws. We were too rigid and stuck with doing the same things over and over again that didn't work.

Actually, we all know Rooney is done. He will go Major League or Chinese League. Lingard, I have never rated him, I don't know what he bring to the team. Mata is a good players just too light weight and zero pace. We are just like going to a bowling game with the 40 points handicap. I know Jose trying to rest players but this is embarrassing with 33% possession. I will give him one more season even without Europa Cup title. I really think he needs to ship out 5-6 players and bring in upgraded one.

    He's signed a new contract.

The others; Carrick bit part player. Smalling I think does have a future but he needs to show the balls Rojo did.

The others- can't see it but we need to win the Europa first then off load them to get greater quality.
Why is De Gea on that list?

This section of the forum is so obsessed with Rooney it's ridiculous.
If Rooney comes off in this match it will make very little to no difference. It's like back when Van Gaal was here and taking Rooney out would mean we'd become world beaters.

It is both! We have the most expensive squad in the world, and this is our midfield. I think Mou is trolling the Glazer's with this team selection.

No, the players are just not good enough to pull of the counter attacks which he is trying to play.
You don't play Tuanzebe and Rooney in CM and Lingard on the wings and expect to counter attack.

In any case I don't think the personnel are the problem. It's not like if we played Herrera and Mikhi we would have done better as the previous games have shown. It's his approach, and the fact that he has given up on these games. That's the reason why we are so terrible imo.

I am able to sit back and watch this game objectively as I don't feel invested in it like I usually am. In my mind, and probably Jose's, its a good opportunity to assess the individuals when they are outside of their comfort zones without the likes of Pogba and Zlatan to lean on. Here is what I have learned or had confirmed....

    - Bailly actually contributes going forward at RB but wierdly loses some of his defensive instinct

    - Smalling is fine when playing up against a centre forward but not at all comfortable when he is asked to run backwards towards his own goal or play the ball out

    - Jones will always get embarassinly skinned once per match despite being generally decent

    - Blind lacks the dynamism to be a PL LB

    - Rooney. Won't bother, it's all been said elsewhere

    - Lingard is just not up to standard. I feel of all of our squad players, other than the obvious one, Lingard is most out of his depth. I genuinely think you could stick him in a good Championship side and he wouldn't really stand out

    - Mata, sorry this will be the most controversial ones but for me he embodies the problem we have. Too small, too slow, can't press, doesn't have the ability to go past a player. See Carrick, see Rooney, see Blind, etc....too many players who when you compare them to their Spurs counterpart are way inferior physically

    - Martial, said it before, will continue to say it, never a #9

The Strange thing is we are down to a terrible defensive error, good cross but no way Rooney should be marking him let alone jumping under the ball.

We have had our moments which is testimony to JM tactical nouse since the team is a hodgepodge at best

zonal has cost liverpool a chance at the title and we very few englsh teams are good enough to play it - and certrainly not bright enough. it's a recipe for disaster. what we need is top-class players playing in those positions so that they are the ones to dominate

Only if we commit a few men forward, we could upset them. But we are in a constant state of transition either from attack to defence or vice versa, it makes things difficult to control. Also midfield is...
Nevermind.. its park the bus half of the game anyways...

Exactly, like one of those hollywood agents who drop their clients like a sack of potatoes as soon as their next album or movie flops. Embarrassing to see fans here exaggerating in their criticism. Yes, Rooney has declined and isnt a starter anymore, but he more often then not put the effort in on the pitch.
Simply no true or you have some serious issues when it comes to effort. The guy doesn't care anymore and we shouldn't either. The club before the players. Also, like he hasn't received anything back...Embarrassing is seeing people overdo it with poetic bulcrap about yesterday players who haven't tried to adapt and sit tightly on a huge contract.

This game shows you don't actually need a DLP like Carrick. The top teams now just have DM specialists; Kante, Matic, Wanyama, Casemiro etc.

People here always want their DM to have Carrick levels of passing and it's simply not required. We need to forget about Carrick, we can't replace him so we have to evolve.

Even with non world class players, say Wanyama and Ndidi, we'd stop a lot of opposition midfields from playing and we can give the ball to flair players (or ruddy buy them).

I love Carrick but I am sick of seeing him being played in games like these, his time has come.

Abysmal first half. However, I am not surprised, we played like this for the majority of the season. Lack of passion, commitment, everything. I will be ecstatic when Smalling, Rooney and Fellaini will leave the club, it will be better than "buying" Griezmann, Bale and Neymar combined

Can't really understand why haven't we started with the equally defensive 4-4-2, with Mata in the right and Lingard or Rooney on the left, we look so narrow.

I don't think any of them declined at 31 in fact they were still displaying top performance. The decline of Rooney at 31 has been astonishing.
Rooney is the only one on that list playing professional matches at 16 years of age. More mileage and the well known (hypothesis) of young attackers breaking through at a young age declining faster then others.

It may be a nothing game, but the above players should be giving 110% as they're essentially playing for next seasons "draft pick" as JM looks to buy and sell.

Mata seems to be the only fringe player to be giving his all and trying to play for a spot against Ajax.

Can't really judge the two youngesters as it's a big game against one of the best teams in the league and their getting good experience.

That said Herrera and Rashford for Rooney and Lingard may make for a more livelier 2nd half.
