Why should they risk going down to Europa League? They are what we call a plastic club but I wouldn't underestimate them. Wolfsburg will want to make it into the KO stage and therefore focus first on not losing against you lot. Out of 9 possible outcomes, there's only one in which they play Europa, and that is losing to you and PSV winning.

Your last assumption cracked me up. Wolfsburg lots of possession against a LvG United? Not in this world. It doesn't fit LvG's philosopy.
My assumption being we will score first and they will then throw the kitchen sink at us, hence possession may be in their favor.

United have no option, but to go for a win, there is too much risk in hoping for a snatch and grab, and I know this would appear to be against LVG Philosophy. I prefer to think of United being in a similar situation to that when we faced Spurs, Liverpool, City ...etc last year and played a certain way.

For Wolfsburg, YES, there is a risk in losing, if they go all out for a win from the start and get caught. With their home record that is less likely. On the other hand they could be cautious. But will they really just want to qualify to meet a Madrid or Barca. Would they see that as success? Not sure, but I do not know their mindset.

The match is tomorrow and I'm already nervous. That's how much is riding on this game. How have we managed to feck up this group?

I see now where you're coming from.
Wolfsburg's DoF as well as their manager have stated a couple of times that they would be very disappointed if they won't reach the KO stage of the Champions League; they said so before the match against CSKA and repeated it thereafter.

Therefore, I don't expect them to go gung-ho for a win and would not count on United being the team to score first. I neither expect Wolfsburg to park the bus, that's not their style; however, they won't take as much risk as in Bundesliga home games, sit deeper, stay compact and aim to hit you on the counter.

Loving the optimism in here. Almost like most of you haven't been watching us the last month. All season in fact. We are in the Europa league lads. We had a game at home to essentially secure our place in the second round and we couldn't do it. We stuttered past CSKA clearly the worst team in this group and our performance against Wolfsburg at home we were hanging on for dear life.
True. We've made a right mess of this group and we haven't dominated a single game despite the group looking a bit 'weak' on paper. I honestly thought we'd easily waltz through to the next round. It was thought by many that LVG would make us look much better in the CL than in the league. It hasn't happened. Whats shocking is how weak PSV are. They should be the team at the bottom. Even Arsenal would've killed them at the Emirates. Now we have to produce against the strongest team in the group. Im not optimistic at all

Great lineup. It won't happen though. McNair will either be at RB again or pair with Smalling pushing Blind back to LB. I also see that big oaf Fellaini getting the nod at number 10 again. I'd start Young as well, interchangeable with Depay

I really hope Powell gets some game time. He can really produce moments of magic out of nowhere. We need to have a real go at them tonight. 4-3-3 and attack with pace down the flanks

Wolfsburg looked completely out of their depth until the 0:1 and Gündogan's injury - iirc Dortmund hit the woodwork twice within the first 5 minutes, people should relax a bit about the match. Wolfsburg are a decent, well organized team, but they aren't unbeatable.

I'm still very confident you'll draw and PSV won't win.

Just don't see how we are going to win this game. Martial would need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to even score 1 goal. I see Wolfsburg winning by 2 goals.

It's hard to beat anyone if you can't score.

It's strange because we've got a huge European game coming up tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to it at all, I'm dreading it.

Nervous for this one, could have a drastic effect on the season as a whole. Think we'll play poorly but get away with it.

West ham, Leicester, Newcastle, Villa, PSV, Palace, Boro etc etc don't think in any of those games we scored more than 1 goal, and in most of them we failed to score at all.

This will not be easy, hopefully we win, but I am not overly confident at all

They're bang average since De Bruyne left. If you are unable to beat Wolfsburg you don't belong in the round of 16 anyway.

They average nearly 3 goals a game at home... so might be tricky to keep them out, but I'll still plump for a 0-0.

    Maybe a 1-1.

Pretty sure Wolfsburg were unbeaten in 27 competitive home matches before losing on Saturday. Not exactly expecting us too win this one so I just want the players to have a free license and just go all out attack. I'd be pretty annoyed if we play the usual possession football in this one. Just go all out for it please.

I'd love to see us go back to last year's system for this one. Hopefully Basti can bring Herrera's energy to his position or else bring in Pereira at the hour mark.

Only in the league. They lost in the cup at home against Bayern 5 weeks ago and last season in the Europa League at home against Everton and Napoli. They're far from invincible at home.

Look at that squad. Only two are pure attackers,Memphis and Martial. Business has to be done in January, no ifs or buts.
Who do you propose we buy?
People keep saying this, but in the Summer we tried to get attackers and the only player who matched our requirement and was gettable was Martial.
In January buying a player (who we couldn't acquire in the Summer) is going to be near impossible.

If I'm listening to my heart I hope we'll win and get through. But on the other side my mind says no. When we meet the real deals in the KO stages and we perform like this season so far we'll get whacked anyway. And that will be a shame for a club like us. We have to focus on winning the league, no matter how!

We have no winning momentum going into this. The pressure is huge given the criticism lately. We're away from home. We don't have a single attacking player in form so I don't see who's likely to make the difference on the night. We have a feck load of injuries.

In other words I think we're screwed. Biggest hope I have is CSKA pull off a miracle and win their game away from home, but they don't appear to have a great deal to play for, compared to PSV.

Wolfsburg lost to a last-minute matchwinner today at home. Expect a better performance from them, I can't see them losing 2 home games in a row especially against a toothless Man Utd.
Watched that one now that we get German games Stateside. It did not encourage me regarding our chances.

biggest game of our season, but i'm saving room for disapointment.

But we can win, but that will need us to really go for it. I hope they can at least do that.
I'd say that its the biggest game of LVG's MUFC career.
