I think you want De Gea over Henderson for this, regardless of how we are currently managing them. Without Maguire we concede a lot of shots and DDG is in his element when he’s getting peppered.

Villarreal will play deep and for that reason I'd start Greenwood over Rashford. I expect Rashford to start though.

If we're picking more in form Greenwood should start ahead of rashford

Think we'll go with Pogba on the left, Rashford on the right, and Lindelof and Bailly at the back.

If we're 3-0 up and cruising can see Mason, VdB, Matic, Mata and Telles or Axel all getting on.

I’d be playing both rashford and Greenwood.

Pogba in midfield with 1 of Fred/McTominay.

Doubt he splits up McFred though.

Chukwueze is injured for them so won't play, he's a big miss for them.

Just found out they don't usually pose a big threat in the air. They've scored 3 headed goals this season which is joint lowest across all 5 leagues.
That's good to know, especially with Maguire out. It may be another reason why it looks like DDG is getting the nod over Henderson for this. With no Maguire, I think I'd feel more comfortable with DDG's experience behind a second choice CB partnership.

    Axel Bailly Lindelof
    AWB - Matic - Pogba - Shaw
    Bruno - Cavani - Rashford

Yes i know looks a bit wild on paper but I simply do not trust the CB's we have at the moment and also with Scott potentially missing the match I would honestly just rather not have Fred nowhere near this team at the moment as well, he's been so bad as of late and Matic even at his grand old age has the quality and experience for finals like this.

With Shaw and AWB further up the pitch it will give them license to get more balls whipped in the box for Cavani and I want a front 3 of Bruno, Cavani and Rashford constantly interchanging being a menace to the VR defence, I think Bruno will drop deeper at times which is fine so I put him on the right but he would almost have a free role.

We need to try something different in this game and not the team that's lost the last few games. It doesn't work.

Can't see any way Greenwood starts. I personally would start him but I can't see Ole leaving Rashford out.

    De Gea

    AWB Lindeloff Ballie Shaw

    McTominay Fred

    Rashford Bruno Pogba

    Cavani

Greenwood will come on around the 65th minute, could be for Rashford, Cavani or Fred. Depending on how things are going.
Yea, this is what I'm expecting too.

We lost to Liverpool. The Leicester defeat was 10 changes. What other games did we lose recently?

No chance Matic starts unless Fred and or McTominay are injured

And we havent played 3-5-2 for months, I dont see him suddenly doing this for a final where we are favourites

I still think Maguire will play. There’s no reason for Ole to give Villarreal clues on his condition unless it’s to mislead them.

If he doesn’t, think we have to go with Axel at LCB. Can’t have Lindelof and Bailly together in my opinion.

The only other big decision is who plays AML/AMR. I think Pogba will start wide left so its a straight fight between Greenwood and Rashford at AMR for me. In my book, it’s no contest and Greenwood should play.

An indirect question for this thread - if we win on Wednesday we play in the Super Cup on 11 August against the Champions League winners. It is currently scheduled for Belfast but there has been a suggestion that it will be moved to Istanbul to compensate for the Champions League Final being moved from there. Does anyone know whether a final decision has been made on this or, if not, when this will be decided? I don't want to be left with a flight to Belfast if the match is to be played in Istanbul!

I don't either, it's a team I think could do well in this game though, 10/11 of our lineup is predictable from Ole and was shite against Liverpool and also Fulham albeit ok we never lost but were rubbish after the first 15 minutes.

    Ole will field

    De Gea
    AWB - Bailly - Lindelof - Shaw
    Fred - McTominay
    Bruno
    Rashford - Cavani - Pogba
The only changes could be if Scott is unfit is it Matic or Donny who takes his place, he will want one potential game changer on the bench and that will be Greenwood, Cavani 100% starts so won't be him, Rashford 99% starts also, doesn't take a crystal ball to predict our lineup these days and villareal will be well prepared, we need to throw them a curveball.

Were they good against Arsenal, or were Arsenal just rubbish? Bit of both?

The midfield two picks itself but it doesn't feel me with much confidence. Both seemed to be decent in the first half of the season, but have been frustrating to watch lately. Fred has at least one brainfart every game. Not sure I'd risk Maguire either unless he is 100% fit, but it doesn't seem likely.

And I hope it's a front four of Bruno, Pogba, Greenwood and Cavani, with Rashford on in the 2nd half.

    Fred McTominay
    Rashford Fernandes Pogba
    Cavani

Pretty certain that will be the starting lineup. Greenwood is in form, but Ole will keep him on the bench to annoy him so he'll come on firing all cylinders at 60ish minutes.
The only slight uncertainty is who will pair Lindelöf, I'll make my final selection on the day after seeing reports on Maguire etc. It would be peak Ole to keep a player like Maguire out of the limelight and talk down on his chances to feature so the oppo plans for not facing him, and then he starts. Also Bailly could injure himself before Wednesday on the flight over or something.

Matic just played 90+mins against Wolves. He will sue United for constructive dismissal at this rate.

This side has performed well most of the season, why use 2 recent games against Fulham (which was a dead rubber) and Liverpool as a reason to suddenly change everything up for the final?

One of Pogba/Rashford needs to start from the bench here. Neither are as good as Greenwood from the right and starting both ruins our balance.

    De Gea
    Bissaka - Lindelof - Tuanzebe - Shaw
    Fred - Mctominay
    Greenwood - Cavani - Pogba/Rashford

Wow. Neither Pogba or Rashford are effective in those positions.
Matic played very well indeed against Wolves.
The most important thing is not to be too rigid in the format.
I am quite optimistic because it is in effect an away match.
And whether DDG or Henderson, either should be good enough.

It won't be that to start with that of course. Fred will play and Greenwood will be on the bench. Pogba will play vaguely on the left and Rashford will be rubbish on the right. Then we'll change it to something more like the above. Let's hope it won't be too late.

I'd like to see starting 4-3-1-2 as we don't have a great solution for RW.

Bruno as no 10, Cavani-Rashford up top.

Later on, Greenwood for Rashford and then we can put pogba LW, Greenwood RW and Cavani as a lone striker.

Marcus and Mason, thus Fredba, not McFred

But is there any chance Harry will be fit?

Why would you only look at past form which included a very key cog to the defence in Maguire which we no longer have in place of recent form ?

One thing, I'd definitely fancy us in a penalty shootout- even with De Gea in net. Any 5 of:

    Bruno
    Rashford
    Cavani
    Mason
    Mata
    McT
    Pogba

I'd probably be pretty confident in (maybe Pogba the least? just because of his style).

Also reckon Shaw and VdB could take a decent pen... think Matic does too? Just A.B.F really... Anyone But Fred.

Unlike Mata, DDG is one of the best paid goalkeepers in the world, really doubt anybody matches his wages.

    Much easier to offload Henderson.
Had this conversation a few times. Why do people think DDG will only move if his wages are matched?

He was likely only paid so much so he didn't leave before.

Hes wanted to be nearer his family for years, now he has a child too. He also won't accept being no.2.

For once, can we have a non dramatic final and just score 3-4 goals with Villareal not even getting a sniff. And then not worry about whether defense can handle it or not.
    One can dream I guess.

He’s just being honest. I think fans put far too much weight on how much player injuries impact the opposition’s preparations.
