Nice one @Arbitrium . Generally, I agree that this philosophy is something Jose will consider, especially given our personnel. It will help him lock down the left side defensively, let Pogba have more freedom and minimize our need for wingers. Also, Jose would love being the champion of this version of Catenaccio in modern times, what with everyone going gaga over Pep.

Having said that, I would make minor changes to the eleven you mentioned, esp against teams below the top six.

1.) Matic as sweeper: I don't think anybody else in our defense has the maturity and leadership to be that all-important middle CB. Matic is, imo, most suited to this role in skill and personality. Moreover, this well help us

2.) Play another attacker: Which we desperately need to do. One of Rashford/ Martial can be that fantasista or second striker. Rashford will be the more direct player while Marial can provide width. Either way, an extra attacker also makes Mkhi much more potent.

3.) Not include Rojo or Shaw: For various reasons, both are not in our plans at the moment. So I would rather look at Darmian, Blind and Lindelof and their possible combinations. My first choice would be

4.) Darmian as LWB and Lindelof/Blind as LCB: I know, I know, Darmian is terrible going forward. But it won't be his job in this system. In possession, his primary job will be to cut in and feed Pogba. The width on the left in advanced areas will be provided by the second striker (Rashford/Martial), which btw will help Pogba move inward. Defensively, Darmian is better than any one in that role.

LCB will be more of a ball-playing CB to complement Darmian's qualities. For that Lindelof and Blind are ideal.

5.) Can easily convert to different formations (4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2) which would not be possible if we played three specialist centre-halves alongwith Matic.

All in all, Zona Mista is a terrific idea for our squad with Jose as our manager and the points I mention are trivial in the general scheme of things. Nice thread :)

mkhitaryan in his number 10 role that's probably his most effective.
TBH this and the midfield layout is the only thing I agree with! Well, all I understand really.
I thought Shaw and Rojo are both still injured and Lindelhof at the moment looks like some one who has wandered out of his depth and in any case, doesn't Valencia run up and down the right flank anyway, in what is a supposed right wing-back role?

Must admit hadn't heard of zona mista? Obviously something 'out of Italy', but is it a style of play, with a 'philosophy ' under-pinning it? A system of play, perhaps to counter-act certain types of opposition play? Or an 'in-game' tactic (like 'pressing') used at certain times in certain games?
