It's going to be a tough month for signings, you can hear it now from Ole.

It'd be great to get a natural goal scorer in, but Agree a central midfielder is crucial, reading this morning Madrid won't sign Pogba in January, if true play him behind the strikers, but sign a strong midfielder in support, if as some say Paredes is available get it done very Carrick like. Guarantee they will be a dearth of quality players available. I'd like Grealish, Buendia and Phillips but they might have to wait till the summer as clubs don't like selling their best in January, tough month ahead

I’m not sure Haaland will be a big success. Watching him in a sprint against VVD showed he has no pace. He certainly does have a scoring record though.

The undercard
Despite our best efforts to feck the season up, somehow we are only 1 pt off the champions league places. Champions league qualification is essential to " The rebuild".
Its very difficult to attract quality players (Of any age) without champions league. Its very difficult to achieve Champions league without quality players. Its a vicious circle and one that we are perilously close to getting caught in.

Our Midfield is below average. It's mid table at best. We can't create anything. But for the uncharacteristic error by Burnley last night, we would be looking at a different mood here Today.
McTominay and James are popular, largely because of their honesty of effort, but they are average.
Andreas is barely average. Capable of having a good game and looking the part on occasion, but only on occasion.
Lindgard continues to get games in the creative role, despite not being able to create. Or do anything else of any worth.
Matic and Mata are past the sell by date
Our young prospects Gomes Chong Gardner are not trusted and are in danger of being lost

If Pogba could only recover from this mysterious injury that has kept him out for over 3 months (with no need for an operation), we could stick him in the 10 role, let him pick some passes and plug that gap internally.
That leaves us needing a central mid that can play with Fred until the summer. That player will be the difference between 4th and obscurity.
That's the importance of the January transfer window.

I am however, already braced for
" I'm happy with the squad we have"
"Their is money their for the right player, but that player isn't there"
"January is not an ideal time for making signings"
"We looked at a number of options, but didn't feel they would benefit or improve us sufficiently"

TLDR
We need a midfield.

The BBC reported that Pogba required ankle surgery. It seemed to be missed by most people. Not sure how true.

But I'll be very surprised if we get anyone in Jan. The only substantial rumours are around Haaland, and its not like we have a great scouting team that will pluck a good available prospect from nowhere.

Our good form and great results vs. Spurs & City should make us a much more attractive proposition. I'm hopeful we can do some decent business, dream scenario would be Haaland & Saul, would be massive additions to the squad.

Eriksen and Haaland would be a excellent window, as it would add competition/strength upfront and fix the MF. Imagine Fred/Eriksen/Pogba midfield looks good especially since Eriksen plays further back now. Also good aged 25/26/27

This

What type of midfielder would you prefer? Any realistic possibilities?

There's a few around I like, but if they are gettable I don't know, I like Grealish, Eriksen, Paredes and Phillips who would all bring something different , question is what do we require most

Think we're less likely to buy anyone now that we're playing a bit better, unfortunately.

Although in truth, I've had major doubts all along we'd sign anyone anyway.

Ole needs to be backed in the transfer window, a few smart buys next month could make a massive difference to how the rest of the season pans out.

We are really close to CL places. Really need a good quality first team/rotation option for the front 3 positions and a midfielder/CAM who is immediate first team quality. I hope we are decisive in this window. We're one Martial/Rashford injury away from a very fragile first team and zero squad depth. These 2 players are immediately needed. We have no rotation options in CM. Fred has played 90 mins for both the previous games and is expected to play again against Arsenal. We have no option but to strengthen or this season would end like the last.

We need a couple of players now more than ever that we have a great chance of getting into top 4.
It's down to you Woody.

I would still sign Bruno Fernandes and get rid of Lingard, Mata, and Matic.

And buy a good Defensive Mid too and I think that's the best we will get this year.

Well Haaland just signed for Dortmund... Proving that unless we can get into CL we can't compete for the best players anymore.
I hope this January we bring in midfield and attacking reinforcements , even if they are loan players, because we are one injury away from a crisis.

I hope so but we can't trust our owners to buy anyone

What about that Aouar guy? Always thought he was as big a talent as N'Dombele and Lyon are usually willing to deal at the right prices. Weirdly I don't recall him being linked to any clubs.

How can anyone have their hopes up after last summer is beyond me. We are a badly run club when it comes to recruitment. Not a hope we are signing someone in this even more difficult window.

When we don't sign anyone it will be the reason we won't make CL next season. No excuses but it's obvious we won't.

A) Dortmund are not guaranteed a Champions League space (unless I’ve missed some German league rule change?)
B) Maybe he went there as he was guaranteed a starting spot where as at United he’s far from guaranteed it!

Very difficult to buy in January, teams don’t want to sell their players mid-season. Who even is available, realistically? We need to sign the right players, not just anyone.

It's not that difficult if you plan from summer and make pre agreements. Sick of the excuses for the club.

Wee knew we needed more players in the summer. City and Liverpool would have them wrapped up for Jan.

Squad too thin. No additions along with injuries will cost us CL

I’m sure the club has targets and planning, it’s not always possible to sign the players you want, and especially so in January. I believe we were in for Haaland, for example. I’m confident that Ole has identified good targets, but I have considerably less confidence that Woodward can close the deal.

There’s a real possibility of getting top four now, it will be extremely disappointing if we can’t secure at least one midfield signing to help.

I thought we might pick up Haaland given the relationship with ole and the release clause. Can’t see anything else happening now which will be massively disappointing.

Imo if we buy in January it s gonna be midfielders. Possible Targets according to media: Maddison, Grealish, Eriksen or Fernández - attacking midfielders
Rice, Longstaff, Soumaré, Philips- defensive midfielders

From those being mentioned, it looks like Eriksen is the likeliest to move in January.

This. After a rocky start to the season we find ourselves with an excellent chance to push for top 4. We are no longer the joke that we were at the end of last season and the beginning of the season so not signing any midfield reinforcements will cost us a chance to salvage something from what has been a difficult 18 months or so.

We should use the money we got for Lukaku to bring in an attacking midfielder and a DM, urgent now with McT's injury, to really push on. If we could get Eriksen for £40m max I am sure we can squeeze in another midfielder from France, Portugal, Holland or even the Championship.

We’ll get the usual line about how difficult it is to do business in January then we’ll say we’re backing the manager in the summer. When that flops we’ll start saying that we’ll back the manager in January. Same shit, different year.

What makes you so sure Dortmund will get CL football?

Boadu (competition and depth up front), Koopmeiners (Matic replacement), Camavinga, Matheus Henrique (either as Herrera replacement) and Olmo (replacement for Mata, Lingard or Pereira) should all be doable.

Our scouts are too dumb to even consider these, We will try for unattainable players or ones who don't want to come to us. We will sign no one and say no value in market. This will be due an incompetent board.

We don't need to worry about Haaland now and it's a shame that so many fans believe the rumours.

We need to look at this logically.
In the Summer we did not buy more players (even though anybody who knows about football knew we should). We knew we were light in CM position, after losing Herrera and Fellaini.
We could've bought in the Summer, but didn't. We also know that it is more difficult to buy in the Winter, than the Summer and chose not to buy in the Summer.
We also know that we were trying to reduce our wage bill, so we got rid of Lukaku (with no replacement) and also loaned out Smalling and Sanchez.

Given the above, why do people believe we will buy in the Winter, when we did not buy in the Summer?

IMO, we won't be buying any players though we may loan in players or get players on a free transfer. This would make logical sense.

No, nobody expects anything in January and rightfully so. The frustration comes from not getting everyone we need in the summer because we know that realistically nothing is going to happen in January.

And next summer there's the Euro 2020 which will give little time for clubs to buy especially considering the tight transfer deadline EPL clubs have to work with. You see, there's always an excuse not to buy. If there's anything United had been good at is finding them all and handle them to the fans for them to believe.
