Van nistelrooy, Id been watching him for a while on Eurosport European highlight shows for ages praying we’d sign him, then suddenly we were in for him, I was beyond excited, then I woke up and switched on SSN , he’d had a major injury on a knee we had flagged up in a medical, move on hold , gutted was an understatement, all ended well in the end :)

Ronaldinho was the other , i was seeing teletext in my sleep

I remember trying to sign Ruud being a fairly long process. Worth the wait.

Thiago, Strootman and Kroos. The Moyes days we're BRUTAL.

The hope killed us.

Sergio Ramos in 2015, was always unrealistic but still...

Thiago saga was just cruel, actually that whole summer. Thiago, Fabregas, Herrera, there were even rumours of Ozil. In the end we signed Fellaini in last hours of window. Dreadful summer and season as well.

This thread is like being on a diet and talking about all the finest food you’ve ever ate. Or nearly ate.
 it's like reminiscing over our exes. Love thinking what could have been... So many, Hazard, Sneijder, Bale (2013)... then think of what we actually signed

I cited it a while back as a heartbreaking saga and got some responses saying it didn't exist, leading me to wonder if I was insane..

But for me, Benzema.

Showing my age slightly here, but the first one I recall being really upset about missing out on was Paul Gascoigne. Alan Shearer springs to mind too. Both were back when we got our rumours from the papers, but Shearer especially looked like a certain transfer at the time.

Haha a strange one for me, but it was Salas!! And then Ruud. Couldn’t believe it when his transfer fell through the first time due to injury

Thought we could reminisce for a few weeks, until United realise there is a transfer window active and panic bid for Fellaini on October 5th.

Ronaldinho for me.

I was on teletext 303 every day, several times a day, genuinely believing the announcement that he'd signed was going to break any second.

And then I remember seeing this as the main headline on BBC teletext and I thought he'd signed...

RONALDINHO CHOOSES MAN UTD

Oh... :(
Ronaldinho and Alan Shearer were pretty intense and incredibly heart breaking. Robben was a knife to the heart as well especially as he was at Old trafford the day before signing for Chelsea.

I’d say Pogba and Sancho have been the longest and most painful. Since the age of the internet, these sagas are a lot more mentally draining and exhausting due to social media and 145 twitter accounts who all know more shit than the other one.

I’ve actually refused to watch any Sancho compilation videos for a few weeks now as it just adds to the pain of potentially missing out on him. Even though I feel it’ll still happen, I just don’t want to increase the anxiety levels of looking at a beauty I can’t get my hands on yet.

Hazard. That saga got me actually to this forum. I was googling to find the most recent updates and somehow found this forum. I joined the forum a few weeks later.
What I particularly liked about the muppetry was
1.) Hazard’s kid wearing blue and people taking it as a sign that he was joining City
2.) Him announcing he was joining the Champions of Europe and some United fans still claiming “well could still be us as he didn’t say he was joining the Champions of Europe 2012”

Fellaini! At first I thought it was a joke just based on the fact he used to play under Moyes.
Then I realized it was our backup plan to sort out the midfield and we got him in the end.
What is even more funny is that Moyes tried to use him as a deep creative midfielder rather than hoof it long towards him or use him at the end of crosses.

Thiago for me. I was so sure we'd get him.

I remember being linked to Patrick Kluivert who I was a massive fan of, then in the same summer we signed Dwight Yorke. I was massively disappointed. It didn't turn out to badly though did it.

Berbatov. Ups and downs all summer. Went down to the last second.

Pogba. Roller coaster ride of updates and tweets.

The Sanchez one, I remember googling ''Sanchez transfer update'' every hour in hopes of finding out if he was going to join us or City. When it was finally announced he was coming here, remember feeling a huge relief... ''Alright, we beat them, we'll get stronger and they won't be able to build on what they already have...they needed him! Good one, Woodward '' If only I could know what was going to happen next...

Funny, that was the one big name transfer I could never get excited about. Felt like we signed him just because we could.

Certainly didn't expect him to be terrible though

In hindsight, did the club overpay for him ? Not sure if City planned on paying around the same fee. Was the price inflated ?

Vidal was the one I enjoyed most on the caf. Remember someone writing a story about Ed rolling up to Juve in leathers slapping down a pile of cash and shooting the place up then leaving with Vidal on the back of his Harley.

Hazard. But we have our principles and Ashley Young was a good squad player and if we disagreed with that we should feck off and go support Real Madrid.

Shearer was gut wrenching because I remember waking up the morning the headline broke and checking teletext to see the headline something like "Man Utd agree a fee for Alan Shearer". And then to see him go to Newcastle just days later was absolutely brutal. I was dreaming of Shearer and Cantona winning the European cup for us the next season!

I think this thread is the right time to say it. I'm a total transfer window hussy.

I don't spend too much time on the caf when the actual football is being played but I'm all over it in the summer. All in all, I think I'm a pretty pure Muppet.

Greatest saga has to be Pogba cos actually we got him after a truly epic thread. That announcement vid

Thiago/Vidal were similarly epic but unsuccessful...where will Sancho end up...

Pogba. The prospect of getting one of the best midfielders in the world and with Utd having no proper midfielder since don't know when, I was deeply imvested in that saga.

I really wanted Sanchez when he was at Udinese and he said he was a Utd fan and then he went to Barca;
That pissed me off and then him going to Arsenal and us getting Di Maria pissed me off again.
I knew when we eventually got him it was all a little too late.

Not a player but the Klopp to Liverpool rumours just after Rodgers was sacked got me hooked. I was reading Twitter every day hoping for confirmation.

I was assuming it was going to be Ancelotti but I wanted Klopp.

Was obsessed with vidal transfer. Not thiago.. Though that was quite entertaining, not Ronaldinho or sneijder or even pogba. Vidal I literally lived in the thread and basically couldn't function. Waiting on news from England... Then Italy... Then fecking south America... Every day..

Without a doubt Karembeu. It was a very long signing. Countless covers in Marca, which I bought faithfully every day during the summer.
One of them, one of the most mythical, with Karembeu behind a fence and the text "SOS, Karembeu screams freedom"
It had everything, even Barcelona meddling with an agreement with Sampdoria.
In the end, without so many options to watch international football, we thought we were signing Maradona.

Lucas Moura and Hazard were when I was getting into the muppetry, would have loved to see them under SAF even if it would have been a short time.

Thiago really hurt.

Jadon Sancho. This deal, if it goes through, will help to majorly shape our future over the next 10 years and beyond.

Oh man, do I miss the photopshop threads from back in the day.

I remember Vidal had some good ones

Sneijder, Thiago, Vidal, Fabinho and now Sancho.

Wesley in particular was mental. When you reach the stage that you’re obsessing over tweets from the guy’s wife looking for hints, you know you need help.

Benzema was real, as far back as 2007!! I remember we played Lyon in the CL, and there was news about the president being adamant that one of his legs were worth £50m
