Congrats mate! That's a great achievement!

F.Y.R.O.M. please

Alexander the Great was Greek
Just keep the politics out of it - and at least be up to date. (It's North Macedonia now, not FYROM. And let's not start on Alexander the Great. Urgh - nationalism...)

You mean West Bulgaria?

(Am I doing this right?)
Oh.. it saddens me really when i think about how far bulgarian football has fallen.. even Bulgaria 2 qualified for a big tournament before us..

It has nothing to do with nationalism mate. I'm a communist for fecks sake, I believe that the working class has nothing to lose except their chains  . But let's not re-write history here.

Alexander the Great (unfortunately) was Greek. This is common ground for all the historians around the world except maybe some Turks and obviously some "Northern Macedonians". It is common belief and there are thousands of ancient writings about Alexander's origin. That being said, I coudn't care less about what he did. My personal view is that he was an imperialistic pig, but that's another topic.

The name "Northern Macedonia" was given after many verbal conflicts and finally compromise (from our part, thanks to our "beloved" goverment) between us(Greece) and mostly Turkey (cause let's not kid ourselves, they have under their influence all the muslim countries that surround Greece like Albania, Bosnia and FYROM). All the graves of former kings of Macedonia were discovered in Greece, all the ancient historians like Herodotus were writing about the greatest king of the Greeks(aka Alexander) and all our internal conflicts between Athens, Sparta, Macedonia and more were about who would be the king of Greece, also the sun of Vergina that "inspired" their flag was also found in Greece. And last but not least all that people from FYROM originate from Slavic tribes. Do you think that Greek and Slavic language are the same?

Anyway I have nothing personal with you or the OP. I wish him luck for his national team

Agreed. Thats why the thread should be called Northern Macedonia and not just Macedonia. Completely agree on nationalism; mixing ancient macedonians -a grecobarbarian tribe-, its personalities and its symbols with slavic people just to create a "national identity" (just what Hobsbawn described as invented tradition) should not be embraced, imo. I wonder if someone created a thread "Bulgaromacedonias or Slavmacedonias qualify for euro", what the reaction would be..

You're not nationalistic but you take grave offence at the name Northern Macedonia and somehow feel prompted to bring up Alexander the Great. Okay.

I studied ancient history and did it for a living. It's not nearly as clear-cut as you are saying; only Greeks will make this particular point about Alexander. (Also, Herodotus predate Alexander...) Anyway, I'll ask a mod to clean up the thread, it detracts from the fun it was supposed to be.

Nice to hear that my brother, the buzz here is great and refreshing. Have you been to Skopje recently?
Last september when my cousin got married. Planned a trip this summer but covid killed that idea

Hes clearly a WUM..Alexander the Great was king of Greece guess why?! Because he conquered all of these city-states in Hellas hahahaha On the other hand its simply laughable to think that the people that live now in North Macedonia have anything in common with Alexander's people..But this is a subject of another thread..

My only proper memory of Macedonia national team is them scoring past David Seaman from a corner.

Anyone remembers Artim Shaqiri? Here is a reminder for the English fans :D

Warning, quality of the video is horrendous.

Goal from corner against England
Ahh you got their first  It was sad how Seaman declined in the end, he was a wreck at that point.

IIRC it was close in the away game in Macedonia too, you again took the lead but Rooney saved the day for England.

 that face he made was fecking brilliant. He's doing quite wel at AZ at the moment so who knows. We have a lot of injuries in our backline. De Ligt, VVD and Ake are all injured..
Him & Ron Vlaar! The dream team. Bring it back haha.

Happy to hear he’s doing quite well. He caught my eye in that World Cup & we were actually linked with him briefly before he went to Porto. That move to Stoke seemed to ruin him.

Seaman had a habit of conceding weird fluke goals. Obviously Ronaldinho being the most famous. It happened a couple of times to him at Arsenal too.

First of all, sorry I didn't mean to offend you in any way. My response was to poster who suggested me being a nationalist. The thing with Herodotus was said as an example (first name popped my head). I have no doubt that you studied history and did it for living and I wasn't trying to be disrespectful. Apologies for that. As for the name of the thread I don't care, it was the first thread that caught my eye in home page

No worries, it's all discussion. But for another thread, so let's leave it at this. :)

Congratulations! When you see the same names every year it is hard to think about the feeling the smaller footballing nations get when they finally qualify for a major tournament.

As @V.O. mentioned, Wales waited decades for our moment (and we did a pretty decent job I would say!!) so hopefully you get to experience even just a bit of that buzz! That first goal or a moment of brilliance - makes it worthwhile.

Welcome to the club! Our lot (Wales) had to wait twice as long as your nation has had a team between tournaments but it was worth it in the end. Here's hoping you get to have your own 'Hal Robson-Kanu sending 3 Belgium defenders down the road with a Cruyff turn' moment to remember forever. :)
What a moment!! There isn’t many goals that I have watched as much as that one. We would have beaten Portugal with a full side!

After 29 year as independent state our national team managed to qualify for a major tournament last night for the very first time by beating Georgia in Tbilisi. Goran Pandev our national team legend scored the only goal. This is huge for my country and football in general here. Can't wait for the tournament to start now.

We will play in group with the Dutch, Austria and Ukraine.
Congratulations my brother- been busy parrying in Sydney at our local Macedonian club ( amount of people was unbelievable) . Can't wait for the euro's and am happy for the nation to be able to celebrate and hope we can become peoples second team as underdogs. So happy you haven't bitten at the obvious few Wums in thread too!

Also FYI To others Pandev is still going strong in Italy plating for Genoa. BY far our nations best ever player. Only Darko Pancev ( from the famous Euro Champions Redstar Belgrade team) who also won Europe's Golden boot award comes close .

Isn’t is just North Macedonia now? I always use to giggle at Eurovision when they had to say the full name each time they were given points.
North Macedonia is the name only recently ( less then a year) negotiated by the Macedonian government to enable the country to join NATO and be on a path to EU. This decision was very controversial as the referendum to change the name had less then a 50% turnout as most of the nation didn't want to change its name ( I know it's only adding North but its the balkans we are talking about!)

We are a tiny nation roughly 2mil that broke off peacefully from the former Yugoslavia - the people themselves mostly get along fine with all the neighbouring nations but politically it's a big nightmare with all the neighbouring countries ( some much more then others).

I recommend listening to none of the drivel from either side as its the balkans we are talking about - like the middle East their are opposing " views" that are always manipulated politically by governments especially around election time ( familiar story that occurs all too often around the world) and as such it benefits certain people in power in all these countries to never solve these issues but keep them alive.

Pretty good description on first page from Kostov - sorry on my phone and can't multi quote.

Only premiership player E Alioski unfortunately plays for Leeds so want him to do well but his team will hopefully get relegated.
