Which other matches can you think of when he played as a striker? The only one I can really think of is Tottenham at home last season. We need to give him more minutes up front, else he’ll never get experience playing there. Just saying oh well he didn’t do that well against Watford playing for an hour with the second string so I’ll pick a 30+ year old whose likely to leave this month seems a bit silly.
He was not only poor against Watford, he looked absolutely lost. Just because he is a great finisher doesn't mean he would be a good striker for us. Playing him on the wing suit his strengths more and Ole clearly knows that.

I don't understand why as soon as he receives the ball, he just passes it backward. Hopefully he turns it around, he was so exciting and dangerous last season

Where he plays is less relevant than how he is playing imo. Needs to be more involved and do more than pass it back.

I’d say he’s wishing last season never ended. Huge drop off but there was always going to be some drop off... I think he’ll bounce back but it’s looking like this season is nearly a write off for him. Chalk it down get his head right and work twice as hard. He can still be a lethal player for us.

Absobloodylutely. He looks disinterested though. Looks off the pace and slow in the press. He's an amazing talent but he'll go nowhere if he's not willing to work at it.

This season has been very uncomfortable for him, with all the off field sagas, getting sent home from England squad and then struggling for form at club level.

Hopefully he will start scoring soon. We need our attackers to step up in second of the season.

His game is evolving for the better but no-one notices yet as he didn’t get a goal or an assist. He’s clearly not a winger but he had quite a few good deliveries into the box that no one got to the end of. I don’t think he lost the ball a single time.

The deliveries seem like something he’s been working on in training to be more direct.

I love how were blaming AWB now for the lack of Greenwood goals when compared to last seasons tally. When in fact Greenwood scored those goals with AWB at right back........ doh!
Good point if it weren’t for the fact that teams are going to be more wary of a guy that scored 17 goals last season than they were before he did that, ie considering him a bigger threat than AWB and focusing more on marking him out of shooting positions than marking AWB’s non-existent threat.

Must be in fantasy land, nothing of that sort happened in real games.

He worked very hard, things aren't quite coming off for him lately but his crossing was very good also.

I have no idea why people are digging him out?

Are you suggesting that Greenwood isn’t more tightly marked this season when cutting inside to attempt a shot?
He is marked just like any other attacker, he just makes too many wrong decisions to have an impact on the game, always going for shot taking on multiple defenders instead of looking to play other players in.

I wish he would back himself a bit more to carry the ball when he's outside the box. If he's anywhere in the middle third he just looks to cut in and square the ball or go backwards, sometimes when he has a good deal of space ahead and only a full back to beat.

He backs himself to take on multiple defenders when he's near the goal so I don't know why he doesn't when he's further out. He can deliver a nice cross to so he only needs to steal a couple of yards and he can whip one in.

Seems to be lacking confidence coupled with desperation to score/impress when he has even the smallest of chances.

To get the best out of him he must be used either centrally or in the channel between the opposing fullback and CB which will enable him to play with in shooting range where he can take advantage of his two footedness and shoot with little back lift IMO. But what's happening currently is that he's ending up too wide and that doesn't play to his strength because the opposition are cutting off the half space which makes him drift wide where the available space is and makes him less dangerous. He really could do with having a fullback who bombs forward and provides width which would then open up space for him to become a bigger threat closer to goal.

Thought he did the basics well. My biggest concern with him is that he's very predictable and defenders have worked him out.

Hopefully he has the footballing IQ and ability to mix up his game and kick on.

I agree with this.

He plays too wide. He should be looking at Salahs positioning and looking to replicate.

He was unknown and able to do his thing.
This time round he won’t get the space. He constantly comes inside onto his left and leaves AWB totally isolated on the right.
His the best finisher alongside Cavani, his wasted out wide.

I honestly wish we just buy a right winger rather than trying to play both Greenwood and Rashford in the position when clearly it's not playing to their strength ... because they are not right wingers,

I would like to see Greenwood given a few chances as a 9 to see what he can do in some of the cup games because yes he is out of form but also being played in a position that's not suited to him.

Absolutely no need to worry about Greenwood. Still oozes class. Just getting far more attention from opposition defenders now who will be well aware of his threat.

My advice to him would be to mix his game up a little. We know one of his big strengths is his ability to find space in tight areas and get shots off but defenders are becoming a little bit wise to it. It wouldn’t hurt him by mixing it up with a few passes rather than looking to shoot all the time. Also, he needs to get in the box more when the ball is coming in from the left. I can understand holding his width when we have controlled possession but should gamble from time to time and get in at the back post when Shaw or Rashford get into a crossing position

Confidence is low but the worrying thing is there seems to be a real lack of desire in his game. For most of the game he was just plodding around

Issues is that now defenders knows him, and after his usuals step overs he always shoot left foot. So predictable.

Second season syndrome, but definitely not a RW

He's struggling in that position now which is odd as he was flying last season. Defenders have clearly figured him out though so you can see he's trying to switch his game up a bit. I've noticed him playing a lot more inverted crosses into the box a bit like Salah does.

When there's not much space out wide he clearly struggles though. He has good ball retention but it's not very impactful. Having him and AWB on that side basically means the ball will come backwards 90% of the time.

Really feel he should be tried up front. He's a finisher but not necessarily great at beating his man, which means he's effectively wasted out wide.
Got the chance V Watford and was very poor.

He’s still looking quite busy when he gets on the ball, some of his deliveries aren’t too bad, either.

Ultimately, he’s a goalscorer and lives for scoring goals, so we’ll always have the ‘he should have passed there” and see him shooting straight at defenders legs. He‘s still very young and if he can get a few goals in the second half of the season he can kick on again, hopefully.

Not looking as two-footed these days.
I wondered this, barely moves onto his right, what’s happened?

I’m sure he will be fine but I’m not sure what’s going on? He isn’t getting anywhere near the box where he needs to be.

A lot of you guys say you wish he'd keep it simple. I don't understand that notion at all. All he did all game was pass it back to AWB, Bailly or Pogba. I want him to express himself on the game, run with the ball, take on the defender, try something, anything, take risks. He's playing like a coward atm.

Our right side is completely dead now. Might as well play Mata there, he'll create something.

Ok but as I asked the first time, which other matches do you recall him playing upfront in to come to this conclusion? Because if it’s based on an hour with the second string then I’m not sure it’s a valid opinion.

It seems to me like he’s being asked to keep the width more this season than last, which I’m not sure is a good thing. It makes space for the others and he actually put a couple of decent balls in, but you really want him as close to goal as possible surely.

Maybe it's to do with confidence and since he looks he is devoid of it, he's resorting to the very basic and natural form of football for him.

He doesn't receive the ball in good areas. Its also not easy playing with a fullback like AWB. Has like 2 more seasons of building himself before we start asking questions.

I thought he was okay last night without being particularly effective, which has been a bit of a theme with him this season. There's a distinct lack of energy, balls in behind and dangerous runs from wide areas at the moment. I can't tell if they are getting in the right areas but aren't getting the passes from Bruno and Pogba, or if they just aren't making the correct moves. We need to work on our passing moves because we aren't carving teams open despite having the players to make incisive passes and dangerous runs with pace.

Has been poor this season and the off field antics surely didn't help either. Let's see if he finds some form

I still think it'd better loan him out for 6 to 12 months. He need to play consistently with less pressure environment. That's the only way he can recover mentality and improve physicality. The championship loan will good for him long term.

Modern day fan baying for blood a kid not getting much sniffs up front or too much space. To be honest none of the regulars are either.

SeemS some folk demanding he be loaned out too. Either trolls or haven't a clue how football works if they think a kid who scored 17 last season and has scored nearly as much as Martial this season, is going to be getting loaned out, hurting our depth in the process. Has to be on the WIND UP.

I’m going to ho against the current and say yesterday was an improvement. Invicible in the first half, fought his way into the game second half, usually it’s been the opposite imo. No goal or assist but he’ll have to keep his head up and keep fighting.
