Similar. Teams have 4 goes ("downs") to make 10 yards. Once they get 10 yards, they have 4 fresh goes.
The gamble is on the 4th go is if you don't make 10th yard, you lose the ball at that spot. Hence why most teams play safe and kick it downfield ("punt") so opponent gets the ball much further back.
Get in opponents end zone, Touchdown. 6 points and a kick for an extra point (like a conversion in rugby).
