Ok. To think you want to put him in the same band as some other players with much higher regard at the club is bizarre.

No need to derail this thread though. It’s been discussed loads before and people don’t tend to change their minds.
Why not, he was brilliant for around 7-8 years, 10 years at the club.

Because I just don’t think he’s been a ‘legend’.

He was a world class shot stopper. He’s never, imo, been a world class GK and he would have walked away had someone not broken a fax machine 3 years ago.

I just don’t picture him as a legend like someone of the level of Charlton etc.

If you put Sir Bobby Charlton as the legend then players like Beckham, Cantona and bunch of others won't be legends too.

This is derailing this specific thread and I’m not debating who is and who isn’t a legend at our club.

I just don’t think that De Gea is.

It’s purely a personal point of view and can understand why some people think he is. I just don’t agree and feel that the word legend is attached to too many players, too easily these days. If he is, we have had hundreds of legendary players, and I don’t think that is the case

Nah you are underrating our squad, it’s comfortably the second/third best in the league and a level above the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal etc. Even Lindelof who people don’t rate is a good player and no worse than players like Gomez or matip at Liverpool or many of the Cit defenders.
Don’t agree. Maybe our squad is marginal better than Arsenal in total. Arsenal’s offensive line up is as good as ours, maybe better (Aubameyang, Odegaard, Ceballos, Pepe, Wilian (in normal form) and Lancazette), and I also choose Luiz above Lindelof.

At least read the post properly. If Sir Bobby Charlton is the benchmark then Cantona isn't a legend.
He's the ceiling not the benchmark. Very few can get to that level; doesn't mean they're not legends

Yes. Martial, James and Greenwood wouldn’t be starters on Arsenal. Odegaard and Ceballos are better than Fred and McT offensively. Rating Luiz above Lindelof is no sensation.
Pepe and Lacazette don’t get in our team.

Id argue that Ceballos and Odegaard don’t either.

You appear slightly blinkered on some of the Arsenal players.

Odegaard and Ceballos have done nothing in the PL to indicate that they are going to be anything decent

I'm wondering how Odegaard gets in our side. Most observers agree that when he plays and keeps ESR out of the Arsenal side they don't look anywhere near as fluid. I can see Pepe's abilty even though he cuts a forlorn figure at times but I struggle with the fuss over MO

Well, he isn’t.

Personal opinion but he’s nowhere near

The word is bandied around too much these days. Just like the term ‘world class’.
De Gea is arguably the second best keeper in our history at his peak. He’s almost certainly third behind the Great Dane, and VDS. That makes him a legend in my book!

That’s your issue, you haven’t had your eyes tested in awhile. Arsenals team is nowhere near ours, beyond ridiculous to say it is.

You are being MASSIVELY generous to Arsenal here.

I don’t particularly care where he ranks in terms of our best keeper of all time.

That isn’t the barometer for a legend in my opinion.

Being PotY for a couple of seasons in our worst team for 30 years is not a barometer either.

Harsh but fair enough, your opinion.

But the issue we have amongst our fans is that we blame our scouts for our failed recruitment post SAF when it's the managers who have been given free hand to sign players for their style of play.
This is a very good point, and something that I’ve pointed out in the past. When a signing is good, it’s always the manager’s signing, and when they don’t do well it’s a “club signing” that was forced on the manager.

Well if he's already doing most of it then it just becomes a title and rather superficial one at that
Did you read the post I replied to before deciding to give a snarky reply? The poster in question said Bout does this at an academy level, not a senior level. My post was saying he might be a good prospect for such a post at the senior level.

Snarky? Ooh we are sensitive today. Personally I don’t give a shit whether he’s doing it at u12 level or pensioner level. It’s not going to change a thing. We aren’t appointing a DOF

You are absolutely correct. He's been a very good player don't get me wrong but I'm not even 30 yet and he's a distant third best goalkeeper in my time watching us.

I'd be incredibly loathe to list our third best keeper of the last 25 years as a "legend", especially when you think back to some of the other goalkeepers we had who made hundreds of appearances before my time such as Stepney, Gregg, Bailey to name just three.

My wit's end

Hell really has frozen over innit...
The Matt Judge news could be huge. Anything to keep Woody away from the negotiating table.

Pleased for Fletcher. He understands United and should work well with any manager who has similar values (including Ole).

Never heard of John Murtough.

Don’t know why, just feels underwhelming but I guess time will tell whether this is a good appointment or not.

Hmm. Darren fletcher. Not sure what his credentials are but at least there could be some stability within the club when transitioning between managers.

Hasnt Judge always been negotiating though?

Wasn't Judge already going that, without the official title? Sounds like a way to deflect any possible criticism from Woodward.
