Rumors surfacing

Luis Enrique would be interested in talking to officials about the vacancy at Man Utd, and it’s now understood he would have the backing of Ronaldo, who thinks the Spaniard is the right calibre of coach to enable United to compete with Man City, Liverpool & Chelsea. [sky]

I think this is a good appointment for the long run. He would happily accept the job cuz the current Spain squad is not good enough to go far in the WC and he also put on a great show in the Euros with that squad..

Wasn’t my 1st choice but starting to warm to the idea of this appointment if it was to happen.

Would be a brilliant appointment. I don't buy that he'd leave Spain though, or that he thinks this Spanish side can't do well in a WC when they just made it to the Euro semi-finals.

Surely we can get him even if it’s a 6 month contract and then he can lead Spain in the World Cup and then we go for someone like ten Haag. Enrique would probably be the best interim manager someone’s ever had.

Screw interim manager I’d want him as the real manager.

Why would the spanish FA agree to that?

Yes please.

El Lucho would be a dream appointment, alas it won't happen though.

Is it just the usual leaks of impressive managers to show that the board at least tried? Or is is Sky just throwing shit on the wall hoping it sticks?

Just seems like something that won’t happen. Happy to be wrong cause his teams play great football.

*Even for 18 months it might be worthwhile as the WC will interrupt the season anyways so he could potentially do both jobs.

I don’t like the way the media have labelled this as ‘Ronaldo’s choice’. Suggests too much influence from Ronaldo, and who has leaked the information?

He’s got an insane amount of support on this forum in particular. I had no idea he was so revered.

He'd be great....in 2023.

What happens for the next 13 months? Carrick?

Would be a good appointment, a better manager than Mancini.

I really didn't think much of his Spain team at all in the Euros. I also don't think he'll want to leave before the World Cup

No chance he's coming.
Yep agreed, world cup is in 12 months time next December. He wouldnt walk out on spain for Utd job. Would love him here. I'd like a Spainish manager who could make us play more like city and just dominate teams

They haven't got a striker and they all had covid when the tournament kicked off, despite all that they got to a semi. Enrique would improve us, no doubt

Feels like the opposite. His name is barely mentioned when listing great managers, even the likes of Poch are counted before him. But once his name does come up, then obviously most people recognize what he's done.

Why won't he leave Spain? Dodgy world cup that's going to be remembered for political reasons more than anything else, Spain aren't that great and are without a decent striker so they probably won't win it anyway. What top job will be available when he's ready to get one in January 2023? He'll have to wait till the summer anyway most likely.

Always liked him. Preferred choice still Ten Hag, but wouldn't mind Lucho

Whenever his name comes up there’s always a line of people saying he’d be their absolute dream appointment. Until he was the Spain boss I had him lumped in with all the other ex players taking over their clubs, and assumed his Barca success was mainly down to the front 3. There’s obviously a lot more to it than that.

What were his Roma and Celta teams like? Good?

Would be a brilliant appointment. Don't think there's a chance of it though. The board are going to be blinkered and go for some mediocre managers like Rodgers or Pochettino.

Does anyone know what cups he won in his managerial career? Players like shiny things in their cabinet.

I initially wanted this guy alot. I still do but I think I prefer Zidane, wouldn't cry if Enrique came though.

His hattrick was great - but I also wonder how much of Pep's tenure players were the link to his success.

Is he doing good things with Spain?

They play pretty good football and dominate their opposition. They just have no decent strikers.

They were the best coached side along with Italy all tournament, outplayed Italy in the semi's but lost on penalties. They were class. Either Enrique or Mancini would be excellent appointments. Don't see it though.

No idea if he's good enough. He did well at Barcelona but only had one of the most talented front threes the game has ever seen. Other than that, what are his accomplishments as a coach at club level?

I don't know how likely this is, but it'd be an absolutely fantastic signing for you, very, very close to the ideal coach for your squad atm, he'd be one of my first choices for United even if all other big names currently under contract were available/willing to come.

He won't leave Spain. I also think he is not that great. Funny how people completely overrate him. We are not Barca or Spain, the rest is not worth mentioning, as he achieved nothing.

Has there ever been a coach/manager who simultaneously coached a national side and a club side? Outside of FM that is.

LVG was still with Holland when he signed for us if I recall right and joined after the WC.

Luis Enrique - the appeal is that he has an idea about how his sides should play - possession based. At least we’d have some sort of identity.
