It’s nothing like Fergie though. Fergie consistently brought through academy players, and he rebuilt and rebuilt. Klopp basically made one team then dipped when they all got off.
No midfielder or attacker, starting or bench, in our team which won the CL final in 2019 is still on our roster today apart from Salah. And we are still challenging on all fronts.

Yeah so you’re in the Europa league and he’s leaving after most have gone?

They’ve definitely got someone lined up, probably Alonso. They would be absolutely stupid to announce Klopp leaving without having someone lined up.

Does Moyes still have a home on Merseyside? He must surely have worked his way back into the picture for the big clubs with the job he's done at West Ham. His experience in following a big name would be invaluable.

I don't usually pray but I'm tempted right now.

Certainly seems like Alonso would be the obvious choice and maybe that's why he's doing it now so another club couldn't poach him away in the summer

When you look at Liverpool’s next manager odds it just looks so much better than the odds list for United’s next manager

I don’t get it. Winning the next league or CL league title for United would be the biggest and most prestigious thing a manager could do at any English club

Also with the new management structure and investment coming into play at United vs the prospect of a post-Klopp Liverpool, I’d have thought it was a more attractive job too

Speaking from my perspective; i would rather take a job where team is more or less ready for title challenge than spending few years in building the squad.

Nah. The only ones in the past 20 years who have done what alonso has done with little prior experience went on to great things. Zidane, Guardiola. Can't think of any other newbies with similar results when just starting out.
Julian Nagelsmann is the perfect example and, yes, I had to Google his name and I’m now just going with this font

That’s because they’re looking for a new manager and we aren’t. The fact we have one lengthens the odds for everybody else

Is it not a lot of the same names, with the main difference being Xabi Alonso is top of Liverpool’s list which makes sense given he’s an ex player and has already said he hopes to manage them 1 day?

He’s also 36 (!) and the Bayern job completely derailed him
Yeah and I'm not convinced he'd do too well here or for Pool either. He did well at clubs that have as much or more money than the competition and no interest from the general public. Not saying that what he achieved there is easy, but managing a club where everything one thinks or says makes it into the papers is a different kettle of fish, as he found out at Bayern.

Nuno Espirito Santo is doing very well and it would be criminal for them to pass him up

Because we are sacking, they are replacing. Our odds are based on who replaces Ten Hag halfway through a season that's been poor.

Alonso looks a promising coach, but this time last year so did Vincent Kompany.

It’s all well and good reinventing the game in a lower quality of league where you can get away with it. But ask Vincent how easily that translates to the PL.

Even the messiah Guardiola had to ship out an entire inherited squad, spend a billion pounds and break every law in the rule book to bring his brand of footballing genius to success in England. Liverpool don’t have anything like the same resources.

Klopp has done as well as anyone could have with the resources he’s been given there. The chances of them striking gold twice like that are slim in the extreme.

I think it'll be Alonso and I don't think it'll work out all that well. He looks a promising young manager but following Klopp .. Good luck.

I think there is a big difference between what Kompany did and what Alonso is doing.

Alonso/Wirtz for Klopp/Salah seems the obvious one.

Only because Kompany was doing it a year ago and has had half a season in the Prem to put it into context. This time last year people were talking about him replacing Pep at City.

Alonso has been doing it for half a season in the Bundesliga and is the flavour of the month. It looks very impressive, but there’s a huge amount to prove before I’d be looking at him to fill Klopps shoes.

Probably Alonso, he is doing good and got an scouse past, it’s a shame, he was one of my candidates for United.

@Zehner, whats the talk your end just now regarding Alonso?

Never mind the potential for disruption this has on Liverpool, unless the Alonso link gets squashed pretty quickly, this could seriously disrupt Leverkusen when they are riding so high?!

Would just be Bayern's luck that!
I don't think it will disrupt us since there have been Alonso rumours for the whole season, some very credible. Before the Ancelotti extention, there were many reliable sources that linked him to Madrid - even had just extended with us a few months prior. Recently there were Bayern rumours as well. Logically some fans are now a bit nervous but personally, I'm pretty sure he'll be Ancelotti's heir in Madrid.

Short summary: The Madrid rumours began already in 2022 when Alonso took over and was relatively successful immediately. Ancelotti originally had a contract until 2024 and was about to take over Brazil for the upcoming Copa America. That culminated in the then-president of the Brazilian FA basically announcing Ancelotti as the new coach in July. During that time the reports that Perez wanted Alonso as Ancelotti's successor culminated as well and most fans in Germany were sure Alonso would leave in 2024. He himself was apparently a bit hesitant - as it seems, he plans his career in three year cycles and doesn't like to leave behind unfinished business. Then we extended with Alonso in August but the rumours kept going. There were reports that Perez was disappointed with Alonso's extention and that Alonso explained his decision to him. Then Madrid extended Ancelotti's contract and many Leverkusen fans celebrated that more than the Alonso extention. Ancelotti later said in an interview when he was questioned about Brazil that there were concrete talks but that his goal was always to stay at Madrid. So it seems Perez changed his mind for 'some' reason and extended with him. Coindicently, both Ancelotti's and Alonso's contract run out in 2026 ;)

Personally, I think that Alonso is Madrid bound already but wants to see through his career plan before taking over a big club. So they arranged everything for a takeover in 2025 or 2026. I'm confident that if Real Madrid and Perez couldn't talk him into leaving 2024, Liverpool and Bayern won't be able to do so either.

I feel like no matter who they appoint, it's going to be a failure. It's going to be a job where you can fail utterly even if you're a good manager.

However, if I was in FSG's shoes, I'd be looking at Alonso, De Zerbi, and Tuchel. Not that they'd be foolproof options, but I'd consider them to be the best fits.
