There's optimism going forward with our batting in this series.

Just need to find a combo of bowlers with far more balance and control. I still expect us to compete well in most Tests.

89-1 off 15 overs after rolling India this morning.

A bit late for a brilliant session in this test match, but good to see. Just four or five more in a row needed

I wonder if we'll pick Robinson, give him half a dozen overs of seam with the new ball, and then have him demonstrates his off spin abilities again

I guess it'll depend on the pitches. Not sure if two seamers would make a huge difference. England just praying that one of Ahmed or Hartley can step up a couple gears (or Bashir, possibly).

Whilst Leach's economy rate is great it's still disappointing that our front line spinner doesn't rack up wickets in these conditions. Put a Lyon or Swann in the side and it'd take a lot of pressure off Ahmed/Hartley and put extra pressure on the opposition.

You rate Hartley? Watched him a decent amount for Lancs and never rated him outside of being useful in white ball Cricket as he can bat a bit too.
Since you watch Lancs, what happened to Matt Parkinson? England gave him 1 test and he was never seen again.

Managed really poorly at Lancs. Lost a bit of form, then lost his place in the side - very quickly sold. I assume some kind of fallout behind the scenes highly likely.

We had Hartley trying to bowl sides out on pitches doing a bit in the CC last summer and pretty much failing everytime. Crying out for peak Parkinson.

There's a chance he can still get himself back in the England reckoning with a solid season or two.

Since I live in the States didn't get a chance to see a whole lot of him but I liked what I saw. He could really get a ball to turn.

He's a talent definetly. His pace was an issue at International level, he was often around 46-49mph. That's slow turn. He also can't bat and is a terrible fielder. All these things can hold you back at the highest level.

Duckett a decent 47, but still, that's the 7th England batsmen to be out for > 20 but < 50. Need to convert these starts into big scores.

Strangely India also struggled when well set. The difference being there issue was more 60-90 than 20-50.

Reversing all over the place now.

We really fecked up not playing a second seamer who could hold an end first innings and reverse it in the second. Robinson did that in Pakistan so well, Anderson has done it all his career.

Another wicket soon and this could fold quickly.

Good luck playing that. England are getting out to top deliveries today. Not much wrong with the approach.

I woke up at 110-1

Turned it on and thought we might be making a game of this! Turns out...

England have been very good. Just top bowling.
We are likely to not pass 250 in either innings yet I'm going to come away from this Test really optimistic about our batting

Great spell from Bumrah today then as usual Jadeja and Ashwin have backed it up.

Yep glad to see some fight and not just rolling over. The bowling and wickets in this innings have been top class.

Unlikely, but if there's another 140/150 runs here there may be a game. That said, if Pope can knock off a tonne in these conditions I'd expect several of India's batters to be more than capable of doing the same.

Also, England probably don't have the bowling ability to create the pressure needed to win in a low scoring last innings run chase. All of England's big wickets have fallen to wicket taking balls. India's best pretty much batted themselves out.

Once Ashwin retires and Jadeja also focuses more on limited overs, India's dominance in home could very well end. As amazing as Kohli is for India. Ashwin and Jadeja are big reasons for their home dominance.
Agree.

England should be looking at this as a development tour. Get some experience into Hartley, Bashir and Rehan so they can come back in four years. Things could look very different then.

Who will take over from Ashwin and Jadeja? Is there anyone waiting in the wings?

Hartley came through and usurped him.

Parky's a good bowler but he can't really bat or field, and you have to be a really good spinner to get away with that.

Plus he bowls really slowly so very hittable. Hartley is definitely the better long-term prospect.

I'd go big on saying Hartley will never be Lancs number one spinner. He will develop into a Will Jacks type option IMO.

How slow is Ashwin? Never seen anyone trundle around like that in the field

Well done England. Well done Pope. India still massive favourites but another 50 runs and this is a genuine chase. Will require a lot from Root and Leach.

First time I've cheered on a pope. Normally it's been something else.

Will be an Indian win as England don’t have the bowlers but fair play to them for making it semi interesting.

Missed most of the last session. Just seen the score. What a fantastic effort.
