Problem is what happens in terms of the summer window if this really drags on. INEOS will want to make their mark in that
Ashworth will still very much be in the loop with our summer plans. What are Newcastle going to do tap his phones? I’m sure he’ll remain in pretty close contact with Brailsford throughout his “gardening” leave. They’re good pals after all, they can’t stop him going round his house for a friendly chat.

I hope he is worth all the effort.

We should send our laptop and ask him to work from home :D

I mean, how can they enforce this gardening leave shite? Realistically speaking ?
Not a lawyer, but: There is probably some sort of non-compete clause in his contract. However, depending on how it's spelled out and how wide in scope it is, it may or may not be totally enforceable. That's up to the court to decide.

From a fans perspective, I'm happy to wait this out.

Too many times we've blinked first and ended up paying way over the market value for players. If we refuse to get bullied into paying a huge amount for Ashworth, it then sets a standard for every other deal we do going forward.

On a side note, he can always quietly advise from his garden ;)

Have there ever been such fuss over a sporting director moving clubs? Newcastle seems to be absolutely seething over this.

Not a sporting director but Peter Kenyon to Chelsea caused a bit of a stir at the time

When Newcastle got him I remember thinking it was quite a big deal, and it showed their intent. Seems to have been behind some good signings too in his short time there.

I can imagine it’s quite annoying for them to be reminded that a well-run Manchester United will simply always be the big one

It is amazing how the new owners with only 25% ownership in less than 2 months are fixing the real issues. Glazers kept their yes men and allowed them to play fifa manager. Ruined decade.

Himself, Berrada, Jim, Brailsford and Blanc set up a Whatsapp group where they discuss who they feel is the best candidate for Head of Recruitment and any other roles they feel need filling or replacing. Then he lets the team in place do their jobs just as he would be doing if he was at the club.

In the meantime, the board send him an outline of their deep dive into the current structures and organisation of the club, and he can spend the next however many months planning how he wants to reshape it, all the while staying in contact with Berrada and whoever they hire as each of their number 2's to ensure things are being put into place in his absence.

This is a marathon not a sprint, and there will be plenty to keep him busy with while Newcastle foot the bill.

I didn't think I'd ever read a thread containing this many mentions of "gardening leave". Is there a less colloquial term for it?
