End of next season. Give him time
Time to do what exactly? What do you think will happen next season? What has he done to deserve time? You do realise that Liverpool, Bayern and Barcelona are all looking for managers this summer? What good manager is going to be left for us to pick up come October when we've already lost half of our opening games?

I don’t give a rats ass what other clubs are doing. We have a good manager, and I personally wouldn’t be sacking him before Christmas.
He’s won the league cup, and finished in the CL spots last year. We could conceivably get top 5 and win the FA Cup this season. Would you then still sack him, or would he be lauded again?

Good manager? There's too much to unpack here. I'm going to dip out of this conversation. We're watching very different games or living in alternate realities.

De Zerbi or Nagelsmann.
I think there are a number of good options.

Tuchel - He's a good manager, who has managed in the Premier League and did a good job. He used a system which was pretty clear and worked well, particularly when he had the pieces. His 343 is something I can see us employing. With Dan Ashworth and the recruitment team making that their focus, and this potentially being his last chance at a top club, I can see it working. Currently his Bayern team have good stats and are playing well. The problem is that Alonso's Leverkusen is playing even better. This season, Bayern average 19 shots (8 on target) a game, with 61% possession, 9.3 shots against, 63 goals and +37 goal difference. At Chelsea in the league, in 21-22, he had 74 points with a +43 goal difference( really good), 76 goals goals, 15.6 shots (5.6 on target and 9 shots against. These are good title challenging stats. In the champions league that season, Chelsea averaged 16.8 shots, 61% possession and conceded 8.5 shots per game. They didn't just fluke it like in 11/12. For comparisons with ETH, his Ajax side averaged 52% possession in that UCL run in 2019.

Valverde - Good manager who has done well in every club he has been to. Unlike Tuchel, he doesn't fall out with senior management. In his Bilbao spell, he always maintained a good goal difference. In his spell with Barcelona, he won consecutive league titles, and he did so in convincing fashion, almost going unbeaten in 2017/2018. A sign of the type of consistency he can bring with the right team. The statistical figures of La Liga during that era were a big abnormal, but I'll still list them. in 17-18, he had a +70 goal difference, 99 goals, averaging 60% possession, 15.8 shots ( 7.2 on target). In 18-19 he had +54 goal difference, 14.7 shots ( 6.7 on target) with 61% possession. After he left, Barcelona went into a slide. He's a bit pragmatic in his approach, but also successful and can produce consistency. Similar to Zidane and Ancelotti, where he can manage superstar personalities and can stick to the heavy transfer restrictions Bilbao has whilst doing this. He literally got sacked from Barcelona as he wasn't someone aligned with their tika-taka approach, but that wouldn't be something we'd need to worry about.

De Zerbi - Good manager who has managed a team who has been playing good football above their expectation for almost 2 seasons with a distinct style. Last season, he had a+ 19 goal difference, with an average of 57% possession, 16.1 shots ( 6.1 shots on target which was the highest in the league). In managing in England, language is clearly not a barrier for him and his system clearly works in England. This season, he has a +8 goal difference, with 15.2 shots per game, averaging 59.2 % possession. He clearly has the ability to get an average team to play his system, and has seen success in England using this. For comparisions, Potter was averaging a negative shots to shots conceded. He was also averaging 54% possession and had a negative goal difference at Brighton.

Just seen another match where the manager’s exuberance and passion makes a difference to the team…do you think Ten Hag has this quality?

I see no real reason that he possibly deserves another season, I'm all for giving players and managers time, but he's had plenty, and shown very little. Fresh start is needed at this club in more than one area.
I agree.
I think that because he looks and sounds intelligent and competent, we assume he is, but we've hardly played any good football since he's arrived and we're wide open defensively.

For me it all comes down to style..... I want to see an attacking style of play that will give us loads of goals. I want to see an unselfish squad.....players who don't showboat and will always look to find the best option that will lead to us scoring. A squad that plays for the badge instead of the name on the back of this shirt. A squad with bollocks who don't quit once they go down a goal of two. And for a manager and support system who has bollocks and will bench players if they are not performing.

Who should and who will are going to be two different things I'm afraid. I feel after yesterday's loss, the writing is on the wall for ETH. He just cannot inspire the players and connect with them unfortunately. And I'm beginning to loose faith in his ability to actually tactically adapt.

Who should replace him? Lots of great names in this thread - Tuchel, Ruben Amorim, and many good top coaches looking to make the next step.

Who do I feel will replace him? Graham Potter, who I wouldn't mind.

I'm in the minority that doesn't think it's time yet to move on...but...if it was for Tuchel I'd 100% be on board. Otherwise its change for change sakes, which is never a smart move IMHO.

Is it true that Tuchel clashes with the higher ups everywhere he goes? That's the last thing this club needs at the beginning of a rebuild. And do we want a manager who can't even win with Bayern?

Well to be fair he was highly rated when he joined us. Let us not suddenly pretend he is crap manager who doesn't know anything about football. Yes an underwhelming time here but still a decent coach who will find a job elsehwere

If I'm not mistaken he did fall out everywhere

I think the profile of Ten Hag was exactly right. Up and coming manager (if not actually that young) playing attractive, positive football, who looked like he might have the tools to step up to the next level. The fact that he hasn't really delivered what we thought we were getting shouldn't mean we just pivot and go in the opposite direction again.

Going back to just chucking money at the highest profile name who is currently out of a job isn't the way to go, but I'd also be cautious of just scooping up De Zerbi or whoever else currently has the most hype around them as well. I wouldn't mind us casting the net wider and making a bit of an under the radar move, as long as we sort the squad out and get rid of the players that wouldn't fully buy in to a coach like that, similar to the Arteta purge at Arsenal.

INEOS found a bloke with two midtable Turkish clubs on his CV for Nice, and it's going fairly well. I hope we're having serious looks at people who wouldn't have been enough of a 'name' for the Woodward/Arnold regime to go near.

The most bored I’ve ever been as a United fan. Was mind numbing.
At this point I would take that for his record of beating Liverpool in the league every single time. His teams wouldn't let pool consistently put 5 past us, I can tell you that.

We need to keep an eye out for a manager that achieves something truly special. Alonso is going to win Leverkusen's first ever league title in a league absolutely dominated by Bayern, but we are unlikely to attract him. Outside of that, I don't really know. We may need to find someone to be part of the rebuilding process but not necessarily someone who delivers that league title we all want. I think Nagelsmann is an interesting option, he has won the Bundesliga and was extremely impressive in what he did at both Leipzig and Hoffenheim.

If it is Potter & he does crap too then you sack him.

The cult of personality this fanbase have with their managers actually works against the club. EtH is crap & on performance of the team he manages should lose his job. If the incumbent manager comes in and under performs then he should face the same fate.

Fergie is gone and those days aren’t coming back. If near enough 2 seasons into a coaches tenure there is no tangible improvement on the pitch then replacing him isn’t a disservice to the manager. We aren’t getting a 20+ year manager again and you don’t keep failing people in roles because we were spoilt.

Out structure will likely be very strong if our when a new manager is appointed.

What do you base the Potter view on?
Just to jump in, Potter is not the guy. He played as a defender, so that is his mentality. His career was how many years, scored how many goals? If you want high scoring exciting football, you want pedigree and a guy who has a history of winning.

Things will change and not just a new manager will come in under Berrada, it will be the right manager for term. The revolving door thing doesn't work toward stability and it takes at least 2-3 yrs for the culture to change. Sure the odd quick fix with success in the first year can happen, but reality is to build the team to compete in Champions league it will not happen overnight and needs time. Look at the first team that played on Sat and compare to the first teams 15 and 20 yrs ago. Those lineups didn't just happen. As I have mentioned, 10 yrs of mismanagement has to be rectified.

And would finish all of us off with boredom
Yep. There's definitely rose tinted glasses on some supporters when they're talking about him. LVG managed the team during the only performances we've ever put in that have, quite literally, put me to sleep.

His entire gameplan was for centre backs to pass to each other for 80 minutes and then lob it long to Fellaini for the final 10 minutes because we'd conceded.

If that was the case during Fergie's tenure we wouldn't have all the trophies he won, possibly still not having won the league this century. :)

I think Amorim has been doing a fantastic job at Sporting, punching above his weight to compete with Benfica who are in a much stronger financial position. In fact his managerial career so far has been case after case of him punching above his weight, see the below video.

Liverpool are now heavily linked and my guess is he will be there Plan B if they fail to get Xavi Alonso, which I will hate to see happen. Hopefully we make a call on ETH sooner rather than later before we lose out.

From a tactical perspective this video analyses Sporting’s performance against Arsenal last year in the EL and you can start to see how some of our current squad could suit this set-up.

GK

I think Onana would really suit this role. Playing as a 4th defender in build-up and using his composure to bait presses is what we have all wanted to see from him (as per his CL final performance).

CBs

Here we would need to invest in athletic defenders who can defend wide spaces and play a high line. Currently none of our CBs can do this to the necessary level. Licha however would be great at bringing the ball forward from LCB to join the single pivot in midfield in the build up.

If we could bring in a couple of CBs like Todibo and Lucumi (plus maybe even Mengi, if Luton go down) we could very quickly have the right set of CBs to play this system.

WBs

Out wide both Dalot and Shaw and can play this role to a good level. Would need to think about depth on both sides though.

Obvious additions would be Frimpong at RWB and in dreamland someone like Theo Hernandez or Alfonso Davies at LWB. If Malacia reappears maybe we have enough depth here though. I know it’s been mentioned and scrutinised before but I also think Antony could be tried here too if we can’t offload him.

CM (Ugarte role)

I think Mainoo would be great here and almost tailor-made for it. He’ll be crucial in being an option for the CBs and getting the ball out to our wide players. He might not have Ugarte’s energy levels off the ball, but on the ball he’d excel here. Other than Mainoo we don’t have another player with the necessary skill set really.

Someone like Florentino Luis who is a destroyer type DM but also very progressive could be a smart pick up. Palacios at Leverkusen or Andre Trindade could be options too.

CM (Goncalves role)

This is an interesting one. Could Bruno or Mount do this role? Potentially, they both have an engine to help Mainoo (who could also play this role I should add) out of possession. However, I think we need a better ball carrier here, at least as an option.

Khephrem Thuram would be perfect or if we’re being really greedy, Joao Neves.

RW/LW

Here we are actually pretty stacked. We have the obvious candidates in Garnacho, Rashford, Amad, but also think Bruno and Mount could operate here.

Being greedy I would pick up Bardghji as he’s cheap and has an incredibly high ceiling.

ST

Don’t need to dwell on this too much as obviously we have Hojlund here who has the right work rate to lead the press. Depth is the only issue.

Difficult one but either Guirassy or Zirkzee would be good rotation options.

I know this isn’t a transfer thread, however I thought I’d add some solutions in there that would adjust our squad to be able to play Amorim’s way, as no doubt some people will say we can’t play this type of system.

We won't win the FA Cup nor get top 5.

If by some miracle we do, I'd still sack him.

Some of you are genuinely living in la la land. Almost every metric in world football has our performances graded to the level of relegation fodder teams across the Premier League and Europe. I don't want to hear any excuses how the Glazers/Board were preventing him from getting more out of this squad.

He should be instantly sacked as soon as the season is over irrespective of how the season turns out.

It's not that. It's because standards have well and truly fallen post-Fergie and posters have deluded themselves to accept that this is our level now. We used to strive for the best in class but now top 5 and Europa league is good enough to some.
