Yep, he says he wants to make three films in total by adapting Dune Messiah next. As that takes place 12 years after the events at the end of Dune, he says he is going to wait a few years to do it.
I did read a couple of negative reviews, but there are always some. The vast bulk I read were mouth frothingly effusive in their praise for it.

They've marketed the shit out of this, so I'm intrigued how well this does at the box office.

I'm not a huge fan if the first but I think it did a great job of putting down the foundation for the series to lift off now.
I'm expecting this sequel to be far more involved and exciting for general audiences.
I enjoyed it but it wasn't that exciting. Felt very much like half a film (which it was).

Yep. It was a film purely built for a sequel.
Think of it as a set up/foundation for the second part of the story. They ramp up the adrenaline tenfolds in the second one.
It's right up there with Fury Road as one of the most visually stunning/impressive movies I've ever seen, and they balance everything perfectly. Not one scene feels like filler.
Probably my favorite cinema experience ever.

It was a bit slow, so if you don't like that aspect of Villeneuve's work, I get that Pt 1 didn't excite you too much. Pt 2 is supposed to be much more action though, from what I've read. A rather different overall tone.

Honestly can‘t remember much of it, sure pretty shots and high production values but I‘m one of the few that actually likes Lynch‘s version - at least most of it - and thought for example the Harkonnen were depicted very tame in the new version and I adore their portrayal by Lynch. Also the set design felt far more progressive in the old movie. Dunno, wasn‘t a fan of Villeneuves Bladerunner movie too.
Aesthetically I prefer Lynch's film too, also love Jodorowsky's visual take.
Kinda funny though the neither Lynch or Jodorowsky read the actual book, not to completion anyway. So, from a visual and narrative perspective, Denis's version is far more in keeping with Herbert's book ( because Denis actually read it).

It's a long time since I've seen it, but I think I mostly thought it was rather awkward, especially the whispered voiceovers. It's been ages though, I might be misremembering by now.

I have a sweet spot for the cast, props and overall atmosphere and its overall unique style - but it has many flaws obviously and Lynch distanced himself from it not for no reason. But in comparison the new version looks like a streamlined, no risk approach which made it a bit soulless and dull in my opinion. Glad you guys like it though.How is Austin Butler in this?

Judging by the reviews so far, this will be Villeneuve’s Dark Knight and it will propel him to that top echelon of directors where droves of people will be hyped for whatever movie you’ve got coming out.
What did people really see in the first one? Seems to me that people are just jumping on the hype train.
Amazon had the rights but I think the estate backed out of it in the end, which, judging by their LotR series, I'm thankful for.
I enjoyed the first one without being blown away, as flawed as the Lynch version was it captured the weirdness much better. Villeneuve is great at the epic spectacle stuff, though.
After all the posts in this thread explaining why people thought the first one was great, I think it's justified to ask: why didn't you see anything in it?

The stakes weren’t that high, everything seemed a bit too easy, especially the final army showdown. Although my heart was racing at the final duel. And for some reason I thought part 2 was the last one.
