Who replaces Ten Hag?

Genrally I am no longer sure ETH is the right one for United.

My problem is I do not see any good choices that I would feel confident would come in and do a great job.

- Tuchel, Mourinho and Conte are 1-2 season coaches that leaves the clubs in worse condition than when the came.
- Potter and De Zerbi have not shown anything that gives me confidence they can build a team. On the contrary they seem to get worse.
- Zidane, Klopp & Ancelotti are never coming to United.
- Nagelsmann might be interesting but wont be available until late in the transfer window meaning another year lost.
- Inzaghi and Amorim seems talented but I am afraid the United job is still way above their current ability
- Alonso is interesting but still new in the coaching game and would choose Liverpool or Bayern over United

And to top it off better teams are also looking for a new manager.
Nagelsmann seems the best candidate who we can realistically get. Tuchel maybe no 2.

There really is a dearth of available top level managers at the moment.

Does anyone have more info on Nagelsmann in terms of ability and style, promoting youth, record in transfer market?

I think ETH is a dead man walking unfortunately. He hasn't shown enough to be a top level manager. The only way he stays on is if we can't find anyone suitable to replace him.

He'll get a job somewhere else and repair his reputation. I don't think he'll be out of work long like Potter or Ole.

The 1-1 draw against Chelsea? He wasn't their manager when we beat them.
That result for me was the best performance I've seen Eth manage at the club and it was an undeserved result the team did enough to win.

It should have been the blueprint for how this team should have moved forward. The decision to follow the ideology of being a transition team has singlehandedly cost him the job as I'd imagine things stand.

Andy Mitten said on Irish radio that he'd replace ETH with Luis Enrique if it was his decision tomorrow.

He also says he doesn't think any decision will be made on ETH til the end of the season. His job is still in the balance.

Andy Mitten has lots of sources in the club so his opinion has some weight.

Nagelsmann. 100%
Would be entertaining to watch. His teams are always well coached and quickly reflect his ideologies, which are very aggressive football. I don't buy into this idea that our 30+ players aren't coachable and think he could put something together even with this squad right now. My only question mark would be whether he can translate it to league titles, but that is a conversation for down the road.

In fairness to Potter he only ever improved Brighton from Relegation candidates to European hopefuls, certainly didn't take them backwards. They also played some of the best football in the league, creating chances for Fun, they lacked a top quality Goalscorer. There is only so much you can do as manager sometimes.

They were 4th when he left for Chelsea granted it was early season but they were looking very good. His time at Chelsea is pretty hard to judge really, wasn't there very long and it was a mess, and noone has done any better since either. He failed ultimately but it would judge on how he improved Brighton and the quality of football they were playing, then a doomed short spell at a turbulent Chelsea.
What has Potter done that Moyes didn’t do before he managed us?

Like people want ETH replaced but some of the suggestions, even spurs or Brighton managers are just shot in the dark selections.

Whoever it is will need a longer rope than our previous managers anyway. Still, none of the available choices inspire much and all have their downsides. Will not be a quick fix whoever it is.

But how is that better than ETH.

ETH was great at Ajax and OK in United the first year.

Potter was good at Brighton (under a great setup), but flopped straight away in a big club (I agree Chelsea is a turbulent club but so is United).

I stand by that Potter would be a very bad choice for United.

So from the people who actually won something, potentially play attractive football and could be lured to join us we have Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique?

Can Simeone potentially play different type of football given different budget and options?

Just give up already, please God!
The man has been here for 18 months or more and we have been dominated by rubbish teams. We haven't been able to have a clear pattern of play, cede initiative and possession to average teams and man management has been absolutely dog shit.
I can't point to a single player who has improved under him and all his signings have been a monumental failure for one reason or the other.

If you believe that ETH can fix this good on you but don't come up with drivel like their are no managers that can do a better job.

I am happy to give this fraud man a chance if he at least comes out clean and tell us that he knows we have been dog shite but he will fix it rather he keeps coming up with post op addresses that suggest that we can't see the "beautiful" football being served up.
First off, we haven't just been dominated by rubbish teams, we have been dominated by good ones too.
Here are the issues,
First off ETH has no idea on what he is trying to build, the confusion on the field is clearly based on an ad hoc training approach.
Second, he doesn't have the players, this a huge concern. More to the point, the name that we use to carry from a recruiting standpoint disappeared 5 yrs ago, maybe even before that. Given that players are looking at title possibilities, CL competing, in some cases more than $$$ (Although rare) its just not there. Been looking for a class striker and midfield for how long?
Lastly, as others have mentioned, poisoned chalice on the culture end. It still exists as long as players like Bruno, who wears the armband and Rashford stick around. Would you have seen Ruud go down with a little touch then roll around on the ground? Heck I have seen him score goals carrying guys on his back. Had he been playing instead of Rashford he would have had a hat trick.
To think this would all be rectified in under 24 mnths was a mission impossible.
Excuses perhaps but look more to reasons.
On the other side, the most concerning, I don't see progression. They aren't getting better.
So in reality, ETH is certainly part of the problem, however, it goes far deeper.

What he did in Sweden was pretty damn impressive.

In December 2010, Potter signed a three-year contract as coach of Östersund, who were then playing in the fourth tier of Swedish football, starting on 24 January 2011.[17] Potter was offered the job after Graeme Jones, his friend and assistant to Roberto Martínez at Swansea City, recommended him to chairman Daniel Kindberg after Östersund's pre-season friendly with Swansea.[18]

In 2013, after two successive promotions, Potter extended his contract with the club for another three years.[19] On 27 October 2015, Östersund secured promotion to the Swedish top flight, Allsvenskan, for the first time in their history following a second-place finish in the 2015 Superettan.[20] Östersund finished their debut season in eighth place, winning plaudits for their "slick passing game" and competing on a limited budget.[21][22]

On 13 April 2017, Potter's Östersund team won the Svenska Cupen, beating Norrköping 4–1 in the final.[23] This granted the team a place in the second qualifying round of the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League where they defeated Galatasaray 3–1 on aggregate.[24] In the third round they defeated Fola Esch 3–1 on aggregate[25] and in the play-offs they knocked out PAOK (3–3 on aggregate with more away goals), thus securing a historic entry into the Europa League group stage.[26][21] They finished second in their group, level on points with Athletic Bilbao.[27] Despite beating Arsenal 2–1 at the Emirates Stadium, they were eliminated from the competition after losing 4–2 on aggregate.[28] Östersund finished their domestic league season in fifth place.[24]

Taking a team from 4th division to group stages in the EL finishing second in the group level on point with Atletic Bilbao then beating Arsenal 2-1 at Emirates Stadium. That's some FM level stuff.

His trajectory has been very impressive. From Östersund, a very small team in Sweden, all the way up to Chelsea. If Chelsea wasn't such a circus I have no doubts in my mind he would have been successful there as well.

I would love to have Potter as our manager working with Ashworth going forward!

We really need to get an interim in, why throw away the season when we could potentially still get ucl football (5th) and fa cup to play for if we can get a positive bounce from an interim which I could see happening as ten hag is in the mold of mourinho in terms of strictness

People are dismissing the Dutch league as Mickey Mouse , you aren’t gonna get much traction using the Swedish league!

United are and have been a circus far longer than Chelsea, is it not fair to say Potter probably equally would have failed if he was hired instead of ETH?

It’s such an uninspired hiring it could be really hard for him to buy time that will be needed. If he’s hired I get behind him like I do all our managers but the “best of British” narrative that seemed to be coming from SJR side concerns me. We need best in world, not best of British, I really hope this link to Potter is nothing to do with some weird cultural strategy. Just get the best f**king people.

Thanks.

Leaving the decision until the end of the season seems a bad move IMO. Many top clubs are currently looking for a manager and there's serious risk of missing out. Also not fair on Ten Hag. Either back him or don't.

Especially pointless waiting until May to sack him (if that ends up being the decision) if they get knocked out the Cup against Liverpool. As he can't really salvage the season from there anyway

I'm starting to think the list of managers who'd have us playing far better than ETH currently is has gotten very long at this point. I would even take Ole back as an interim, a sentence I never dreamt I'd say.

I'd imagine they're also drawing up a list of potential candidates privately also.

But you're correct, there's lots of competition for top managers and if we leave it too late, we'll end up with nobody.

In my opinion ETH is already gone. He's shown nothing this season to show he can be a top level manager.
He's been unlucky with injuries but it's not enough of an excuse.
We do play a lot better with Shaw and Martinez and Højlund available.

As frustrating as this season has been, do remember it’s his second season only. He’s had to deal with all sorts of issues, which surely would have been massively distracting. Yes we’ve lost a few but we’ve all seen some key decisions go against him in matches, which if they went the other way who knows where we’d be.

He needs (or for me deserves) at least 1 more season within a structure designed to help him succeed. If he then wastes that opportunity then sure, he can go. But talking about sacking him already is exactly why we are so far behind where we want to be.

its a repeat stat but Pep, Klopp and Arteta all had time to bed in. Go through players they thought would work before it clicked. We need that time under a single manager.
When are we ever gonna stop these ridiculous comparisons to those. So in terms of replacements I would like any of Alonso (no chance), Nagelsmann, Inzaghi, De Zerbi, Tuchel, Amorim or Flick

A make-up wearing vegetarian?

I'll pass on that one

Either Enrique or Zidane. Don't see the point in anyone else. Keep Ten Hag otherwise.
So your main point of contention when appointing a new manager is he needs to be a meat eater? Brilliant…

Zidane is a pipe dream.

I think you are overrating the PL and underrating other leagues. To get teams like Hoffenheim and Bologna into the CL is a much better achievement than scraping into the top half of the PL in 1 out of 3 tries and consistently failing to resolve goalscoring issues.
Much better? I dont agree. At all.

In PL, there is six clubs that spend a minimum of twice as much on players as Brighton.

In Germany, with one mayor exception, two of the four places are to a much bigger degree up for grab. How many times have other clubs than the big six managed to break into the top four in the PL for the past ten years?

In the past ten years in the Bundesliga Union Berlin, Wolfsburg, Monchengladbach, Schalke and Hoffenheim have managed to break into the top four. This year, it looks like Stuttgart will make it too. In addition to the usual suspect (Bayern, Dortmund, Leverkusen and RBL). So what Hoffenheim did happens «every year» in Bundesliga. Similar in Italy. «A Brighton» in the top four in the PL never happens.

But if you looks at metrics that is depending less on individual quality, Potters Brighton actually came out in the top four. Metrics where Pep and Klopp team have been on top every year (now with Arteta in the mix).

We don't replace ETH with another "manager", that has to be the starting point.

We actually begin in earnest this time to rebuild the club.

Part and parcel of that has to be that we acknowledge that getting the "philosophy" right is much more important than recruiting a "manager" who will magically implement everything we need (because that simply will not happen).

If I were Ratcliffe, I would regard ETH as the Glazer's last unsuccessful attempt at conjuring up a "manager" - and completely scrap that "model" once and for all.

In short, we don't replace ETH with another "manager". We actually think along different lines this time. We rebuild. If that means baby steps, I'm all for it - as long as there is reason to believe there's an actual plan (and actual competence) behind those steps.

The "manager"? I don't give a feck who that person is until after something has been put in place above him that looks promising.

If sir Jim is waiting to see if ucl is mathematically impossible before sacking ten hag then he is no better than the glazers, I was hoping he would be ruthless like Chelsea under ambramovic or like real madrid when it comes to tolerating mediocre performances.
Yeah I would like to think he doesn't have the same mindset over managers as those leeches, looks to me they want to get all of their appointments in place before making decisions.

whoever has the balls to take us away from this midtable counterattacking mentality bullshit. Dont care who we have to sell, bruno and rashford included, to go all out for this. Control the game like a top team and stop relying on individual moments of counter attack like we are a mid team.

I suppose I just think, depending on how INEOs are gonna do things, it could be a very odd couple of years transition and having a big name manager , even an older one, may actually suit and we can bring in our proper replacement when the club has had time to properly set things up.
Which older big name manager do you want?

It seems obvious we’re getting the proper people above the manager first. The correct way.

Ten Hag was a most exciting option 2 years ago, and he turned out as the worst manager of the past decade.

And I personally find the likes of Nagelsmann, Flick, Enrique, and Inzaghi to be pretty interesting.
Yeah would also throw Amorim and despite these 3+ goal defeats De Zerbi into that as well

So what does this mean, exactly? I don’t quite get it. Ten Hag remains in place, scot free, until this unspecified date of fix, at which point he is replaced? Ten Hag is removed right now and we exist without a manager until this rebuild is done?

Difficult to know, really. United, Liverpool, Bayern, Barcelona and Chelsea are all likely to be scrambling around this summer with nearly identical managerial shortlists. We need to get in there early and secure our preferred option (which, historically, United have been abysmal at, but hopefully things will change under new leadership from Ineos).
Yeah this is a point definitely being missed by Erik's biggest supporters in this thread. You can be sure Bayern and scousers will be getting their managerial appointment sorted now.

It was Anchelloti.

Comes in for 2 years. Helps with the rebuild , his status buys time for INEOs to properly build a winning infrastructure and then we hire our proper first manager who hopefully won’t have to deal with all the legacy baggage that was sorted under Anchelloti.

Also, Anchelloti is probably strong enough manager to be actually able to possibly win something even if we are mostly rebuilding.

I’m not a 100% ETH OUT man, but what I am 100% in favor of — if ETH is to be sacked — is sacking ETH now to bring in his replacement, no fukking interim manager, to rescue what can be rescued this season and allow that new manager to assess who’s got it and who doesn’t so that player sales and buys can take place as soon as possible in June.

We’ve dithered far too long as a club. It is time for the club to be run as a football club and not as a merchandise/e-commerce business with football matches interrupting the real business of the organization.
