I always called them Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United in person, Sheff Wed and Sheff Utd if typing it out.

Sheffield Wednesday were the more dominant of the two in my youth but they haven't been in the top flight this century. Jesus, I'm old now! Sheffield United haven't exactly ever been a mainstay, only sporadically being up there in my lifetime.

Sheffield Wednesday have actually been decent in my memory too, Sheffield United never have. Was at Wembley when Sheffield Wednesday beat us in the League Cup final in 90/91, they made both cup finals in 92/93 and they've had more notable players like Des Walker, Chris Waddle, Trevor Francis (player/manager), and David Hirst who Fergie has gone on record as wanting to bring to Old Trafford before Cantona became available by a stroke of luck.

They also finished 3rd in 91/92, Sheff Utd haven't got shit on any of that! Their only claim to fame was Brian Deane scoring the first ever goal in the newly-formed Premier League against us.

Can't go as far to call Sheffield Wednesday "Wednesday", that's just too familiar and can be reserved for the people of Sheffield.

Edit: Random thought, do Sheffield United fans in Sheffield call them "United"? I think they should. Same for West Ham fans in London and Newcastle fans in Geordieland.

Another thought: Sheffield Wednesday I see as a bigger club not just for all the above, but also because FA Cup semi finals were often held at their place due to them having a large stadium in those days. It's infamous now because of the tragedy that took place there. Still, Sheff Utd can never be called "Sheffield", it's just wrong in my eyes!

I also have a bit of a soft spot for Sheff Wed on the grounds that we were poor growing up. I desperately wanted a United kit in the when I was a kid and told my mum I wanted a football shirt, thinking she'd know what I meant. She managed to find me a 78/79 Sheff Wed home shirt and a random Sunderland 3rd shirt from about '83 in the Barnardo's second hand shop that I'd wear to primary school football practice around 1989/1990. Good times!

In conclusion, bog off calling Sheff Utd "Sheffield". They're the smaller Sheffield team even if I do like their "chip butty" song. Always was, always will be!

Yep, that or Blades.

I've always referred to them as Sheff U, but not sure how common this is anywhere else.

Anyone who calls them Sheffield is a wrong'un. Like referring to us or City as Manchester.

When Huddersfield Town come out of their premier league stint with more credit then you, you know its been a bad one.

Though to be fair, I don't think enough is made of what a minor miracle Huddersfield actually surviving one season was.

There's only one United.

Scunthorpe
There was a Newcastle fan in our office a few years ago and he used to always refer to his team as United. The first few months I honestly thought he was obsessed with Manchester United the amount he was going on about them until I realised he meant Newcastle. He was so offended when someone told him Manchester United is 'United', outside of Newcastle they're just Newcastle to the rest of us

Them and Burnley need three more points to match Huddersfield's second season. Two more to match Sunderland in 05/06.

Derby's record will never be beaten. Some achievement really.

I once worked with someone who called Tesco, Tezzers.

Still undecided whether that, people calling Sheff Utd Sheffield, or United fans referring to the scousers as pool, annoys me the most.

Yeah they're all like that, it's a bit arrogant for a United fan to say it granted but even most opposition fans like yourself think the same.

People are weird about it as well. I once got in a Taxi, chatting to the driver about football. Asked me who I support I told him United. Huge gotcha grin on his face when he said.

''Which United, Sheffield, West Ham or Newcastle?''

''Manchester mate.''

''That's the problem with you United fans, you're all arrogant and think there's only one club called United.''

''Who do you support?''

''Celtic''

''Yeah but which Celtic, Donegal, Glasgow or Stalybridge?''

I've always preferred Sheffield Wednesday. I supposed that shows my age. They were the relevant Sheffield team when I was young. Di Canio, David Hirst and Chris Waddle. Eric Cantona himself was on trial at Wednesday.

When was that?
Before he went to Leeds. Wednesday screwed it up. He thought he was going there to sign as he was establish player in France at the time and I think he had already been capped by France, but Wednesday said he was on trial for a week or so. I also heard they left in a hotel on his own for a few days. Not sure how true but I was in Sheffield a lot at the time and heard the stories from my Wednesday supporting relatives.. Moved up the road to Leeds and they signed him in a hurry.
