Can anyone explain how the coefficients stand and what's needed for England to grab that 5 CL spot?

I'd assume the milan and Lazio exits helped. Brighton are out but we have Liverpool, Arsenal, City, Villa and West ham still carrying the England flag.

Arsenal doing a job vs Bayern and Liverpool vs Atalanta may be key for our coefficient ranking..

Fitting that its up to West Ham, winners of the 1966 World Cup and WW2, to help the country get 5 Champions League spots.

Liverpool should get through, West Ham will probably go out.

I thought thought the way TalkSport imeadiately started talking about Klopp meeting Alonso in the final was a bit disrespectful to the other clubs in this draw.

Just out of interest that question, or do you really think you can make up 8 points on Villa?

I'd tell you to watch out for Atalanta but nah. I mean you probably can't make the final playing the kids, but with the starters you should make short work of them and the winner of Benfica/OM
Just checked their league position, not great. They do like to score loads. But concede a huge amount too. They must be one of them Hi Pres teams.

Did you think you could come back from 3 nil down against Milan?
Did you think you could come back from 3 nil down against Barcelona?
Did you think you would throw away a 3 goal lead against Palace?

There's a lot of games, specifically big ones. Villa and Spurs still have arsenal city and Liverpool left to play so yes, I'm not ruling anything out.

Fair enough that.

Would be some silver lining to a Liverpool exit in the QFs now if it impacts that 5th spot should Utd finish there

Villa are away to West Ham on Sunday which wont be easy and still have to go to the Etihad and the Emirates and also play you at a crucial point in the season so we could easilly make up the 8 points on them privided we find a run of form.

To be honest I would rather us go in to the Europa than finish 5th and get in to the Champions League through the back door.

You can safely ignore Italy (who still lead). England are very close to overtake Germany (who are still second), so West Ham kicking out Freiburg could be the decisive duel as England now has multiple good teams in the running while Germany only has Leverkusen and Bayern left who are likely to get more results, while Dortmund isn't favoured.

Should Arsenal kick out Bayern than it's absolutely safe for England.

That narrative they're playing the kids needs to stop. They have two players under 20, most of them over 24.

Leverkusen barely scraped past Qarabag. Experience/ability to handle pressure in these games. West Ham won the conference last season, Leverkusen lack that experience and they're focused on winning the BuLi
But as usual they played a massively rotated team against Qarabag. They have a big lead in the league and play at home against midtable team Werder Bremen between the West Ham matches. It's absolutely possible that Xabi in that case rotates against Bremen and fields the full first choice against West Ham (which would be the first time in the EL this season). That first choice selection easily dismissed Bayern and everybody else in the league, which included absolutely high pressure matches.

That's assuming that Leverkusen can keep or even extend the lead in the BL until then, if the gap should close I tend to agree with you.

I think united are making fifth. I reckon Spurs will give it up. West Ham look good in Europe and Klopp is so good it doesn’t matter who he plays in the lineup since his system is setup for anyone to step in and contribute. England are getting that fifth spot. Ten Hag will be the mgr for the foreseeable future no doubt.

Coming in 5th in a scenario where England get top 5 in the CL is not going through the back door.
But I get his sentiment in so far as that would be a gift of the other English clubs to United because United did everything to feck that additional place up.

Would that be part of some perverted German ritual when handing over the reins of a football club to his successor? Or perhaps just way to try to convince him to take the job?

Spurs have looked very much up for it recently (bar the Wolves slip up) and are clicking again since Maddison's return, they only just thrashed Villa at their place. Much more likely that Villa drop off than Spurs imo (even though it's... Spurs).

Plus Qarabag was a very uncomfortable draw because of the long journey immediately after the derby. The recent away game was probably our worst performance of the season with even extremely reliable players like Xhaka and Grimaldo making many mistakes. We also created much more chances than them (5.6 xG to 3 xG on aggregate).

I think we can forget about Italy, they are far ahead.

2nd place is the focus. Leverkusen kept Germany in it. Now the draw also helped their chances, they have 2 direct confrontation against English clubs, they must prevail in both to keep their chances.

Liverpool would possibly be in the CL quarters had they not screwed up last season. The EL has been a nice way of getting rhythm and confidence into squad players.

I wouldn't assume Liverpool will stroll the Europa League yet, I think they stroll to the final but Leverkusen are undefeated all season and running away with the Bundesliga. In fact, Xabi Alonso to beat them in the final, and then sign for Bayern, would be absolutely brilliant! Of course, I live in Dublin and don't want them in the final due to the days long infestation it would bring, but if the above happened, it would be hilarous.

I would prefer him to stay at Leverkusen because "I'm not done yet", but otherwise I fully agree

Exactly the same applies to Leverkusen.

With the difference that Leverkusen didn't play a team on champions league level yet this season.

The Bayern München they won against was severely out of form. So badly out of form that it even meant the sack for Tuchel.

I might be being a bit silly here but how are Italy far ahead? We aren't far off in points and have 5 teams still in Europe to their 4? With Liverpool going up against Atalanta, they may well go down to 3. If Arsenal, Liverpool and City progress that's rather massive no? This is before we consider Aston Villa who look red hot in the conference league. West Ham themselves proving to be quite a wildcard on top

We still have Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle, Brighton (A), Chelsea (A) to play. Works both ways.

They are expected to go down to 2 (Fiorentina & the winner of Roma v Milan)… but they will get points in the quarters. They are currently up by almost 1,5 points. We need about 6 wins more than them to make up the difference.

if West Ham and/or Arsenal progress, then we will surely be on track to move above Italy, and we will have helped them by eliminating Germany’s threat…

If we get 5th and get CL after an awful season then questions need to be asked of the other teams. Chelsea and Newcastle have just been worse than us. They’ll have them selves to blame
