Please, repeat with me: we are NOT a big club vis-a-vis what we can spend, anymore. We don't have finances to act like a big club. There will be a long and hard road for us to get back to acting like a big club (money-wise). We are currently a bankrupt club that has been robbed and destroyed by decade plus of mismanagement by Glazers.

I think for now a sitting midfielder is probably his most suited partner as it’ll allow him to learn the midfield role overall so to speak without exposing the team.

Ideally though I still like him coming deep to collect the ball as some of his over the shoulder passes directly to the forwards can be an asset. He can be the orchestrator too. Thus a box to box midfielder that’s physical and tactically aware is his best partner for me. That way they can pivot of each other and allow flexibility in transition.

Excited for him to show what he is about tonight.

Our academy may already have one or two. Jack Fletcher and Amir Ibragimov are supremely talented midfielders that will break through over the next few years. IMO we need another established player like Joao Gomes, Ederson (From Atlanta) or Guimaraes to partner Mainoo and Mount/Bruno.
Does he play in central midfield now? He was a forward/winger originally.

A lot of our fans tend to overlook (or just don’t understand) how much Mainoo needs to work on his off the ball game to really compete at the highest level. That being said Henderson and Gallagher are really limited and Mainoo should still start ahead of them.
I wouldn’t say it’s overlooking — more acknowledging he’s an 18 year old who has thus far played in an absolute blender of a midfield when it comes to cohesive patterns and players having specific profiles. It’s a flaw, but you’d imagine it will come with time (and a better system than what we currently play).

For him to become the top level player he has potential to be, I think there’s three areas that need gradual improving into next season:

1. Off the ball positioning;
2. Ownership of the ball - I.E. demanding play more and having more touches and passes per game; and
3. Increasing the range and variety of pass he makes.

Playing in a weird position tonight, more like Fernandes position to be honest. Been utterly excellent in a nervy England team (besides the world class Bellingham of course)

I checked FotMob and he has a rating of 5.9. Didn't expect to see this hype in the thread.

(I'm not watching the game)

He's not as involved as I'd like him to be but he's looked quality any time he's been involved.

I'm not watching either but those rating apps are usually bollocks

I think the England players are reluctant to pass to him when he's in tight spaces or marked. First goal proved that shouldn't be an issue.

He’s too far ahead of rice for my liking. Is a bit isolated because of that. Needs to drop 10 metres back to get properly involved into the game. Having said that he’s still having a good game. You can still see his class. An awesome awesome player.

I'd swap him and Rice, and have him as the deepest midfielder.

I think its deliberate, he's pushing up when foden or bellingham drops and then drops back when rice goes forward. I think his role in this game hasn't been to sit next to rice or be the first to come deep to get the ball but instead pick and choose when to drop and when to get forward.
