Draws aren't really good enough for Man. United anymore though. You draw the next two (which is likely based on your current performance level) and we beat Brentford at home and Spurs win v Forest at home (which isn't a given but more likely than not) and the different to 4th and 5th is 12 and 10 points respectively. They'd only be 7 games left at that point so you'd pretty much then need to do better than both of us on four different match days (and then hope either of us don't do better on other ones e.g. I think Spurs are at home to Burnley on the same weekend you have Arsenal at home for example.

One thing's for sure. Even by the standards of this season I'd be astounded if you beat Chelsea and Liverpool giving up 20 + shots to both (although Chelsea are even more wasteful than Brentford infront of goal so that is vaguely possible).

Win tonight and Sunday and I think we'll do it. Drop points in either game and we almost certainly won't.

So yeah it's not happening. For us to miss out on CL when there's 5 spots up for grabs is completely unacceptable

P6 should be the talking point. Looking at Newcastle program, they can catch us. Not sure about tonight. I think we will win big, 6 nil, with awesome midfield performances from minute 1 till 97 and a hat trick by Rashford. I'll admit I will eat a lot of humble pie if that happens.

Chelsea will batter us and even 6th will be in doubt this time tomorrow.

Fulham and Brentford games aren't the reason, playing badly all season is.
Not sure you've watched us this season. We are like the Dog & Duck turning out on a Sunday morning after having been on the bevvy the night before.

Strangely enough, it seems that the points needed to qualify for CL will be similar to previous seasons, even if there are 5 spots. It will probably be around 70 pts this season. Compared to previous seasons :
- In 2018 : 75 pts (Liverpool)
- In 2019 : 71 pts (Spurs)
- In 2020 : 66 pts (Chelsea-United)
- In 2021 : 67 pts (Chelsea)
- In 2022 : 71 pts (Spurs)
- In 2023 : 71 pts (Newcastle)

Lose the next 2 games and possibly the away game to Bournemouth and the chasing pack, who are catching up on Utd, could push us down to 7th or 8th.
Newcastle seem to have recovered some of their earlier form from this season are on a roll, rapidly clocking up the points.
We’re only clinging onto 6th place because West Ham have dropped points in the last few games and Brighton are in a losing run ATM.

No chance of catching Spurs or Villa either.
That ship has already sailed.

I said this three weeks ago we needed 71 points and now we would have to win 8 out 9 left to qualify, it’s simply not happening, not when your team scores 40PL goals in 29 games, ETH must be sacked for this season, over to Sir Jim but 5th to 8th place at Man United won’t cut it, United are Not NICE so starting making those decisions that were spurted off, all I see next season is another Nice and too much interference and too many cooks spoiling the Broth!

They've won one of their last four games and just drew at home with Everton

Tend to agree with this Newcastle run in is far easier than ours and they could easily get 19 points from last 8 games, including beating us, that would give them 63 points and United could easily win 4 draw 1 lose 4 in line with how we’ve played most of the season giving us 61 points.

We should consolidate 6th place and target 5 wins from 9 games and maybe 2 draws.
we’ll definitely lose to Liverpool and Arsenal and Brighton away is another probable.

Realistically any chance of us finishing in a European spot is gone with West Ham and Newcastle both having more favorable fixtures and being highly likely to finish 6th and 7th with the only remaining fixtures where we are likely to pick up points being Burnley and Sheff Utd at home so we might as well just focus on trying to win the FA Cup.

Its not nonsence though is it, how can anyone look at our performance against Brentford and honestly believe we are going to get points away to Chelsea, Bournemouth, Brighton, Palace, or at home to Liverpool, Arsenal, or Newcastle?

Balanced perspectives
With the constant decimation of our defence, it feels a bit like we’re the lame duck in 6th that most will fancy their chances of taking out.

This isn’t based on science, or stats, but feels realistic. I can’t see our curve going up steeply enough to overtake any team above us, and worry we’re going to be wide open for the next two games due to personnel constraints / rotations.

Chelsea and Liverpool have enough firepower to blow significant holes in our ship and leave us listing for others to overtake.

Maybe seeing Barry & Linda back in tandem on Saturday triggered some serious PTSD?

Maybe Erik has sourced enough drugs to spark a performance out of this lot?

Who knows, but I’ll always enjoy the ride.

Because, as we all know, football works by looking at the most recent performance and extrapolating that over the remaining games.

It's called total and utter inconsistency, no-one gave us a chance against Liverpool in the FA Cup, and look how that turned out.
You never know whether this squad is actually going to turn up or not.

Look at our last few league performances or in fact look at most of our performances since last seasons League Cup final, we are rubbish and for people to be still talking about us getting 5th at this point is ludicrus.

Relying on other teams to drop points is not where we should be.
Prior to the Chelsea game we have two games in hand over West Ham, one over Newcastle and the three teams below them, all I can see us doing is getting sixth

Look on the bright side, at least no-one is saying it's still mathematically possible to win it

The obvious response to that is "look at our results".

We've been poor, but we're over a year from that League Cup final and we've still been able to grind out results.

West Ham and Newcastle may well catch us, but it's complete, hyperbolic nonsense to suggest we're likely to lose 7 from 9 in our remaining league games.

We get it, its unlikely at this stage and we have shown very little to think we will make top 5 but we cannot just completely ignore the possibility it could happen :)

If we take only one point vrs Chelsea and Liverpool then yes, its probably over for this season and we might just lose all interest and finish 8th or something silly and if that happens then so be it.

ETH will have to answer for that kind of finish and will probably lose his job.

It's more likely that we finish 7th or 8th than we finish 5th. This team is getting worse and worse except for the odd match like vs Liverpool.

We are not even fun to watch because of the lack of skillful players and lack of teamwork.

ETH out please, NOW!

We threw away 5 points in these 2 games… (not saying we deserved 2 wins, but we had the points and we lost them to some insane moments)

Game over for us. Better move this thread to the football forum and avoid us further embarrassment
