At least Chelsea's pebbledash approach got them one top player, no skill invovled, just the law of averages.

Will be interesting to see if he can keep this up. The possibility of no European football for Chelsea next season could be a blessing in disguise for him personally, as he won't have as much football in his legs as a lot of other top players.

If Chelsea can find another billion to spend this summer(without having to sell) they could easily make top 6 next season and what a story that would be.

If anyone wants a laugh and to see evidence of just how bad football fans are at evaluating players (especially ones that play for a rival club), they should go and read the first 5 or so pages of this thread.
Absolutely littered with some pretty abysmal hot takes.
I say this as someone who truly thought Titus fecking Bramble would become an England lynchpin, so definitely not being holier than thou, but it’s a real eye opener!

No denying he’s having an exceptional season. But will it remain an exception or become his new norm, that’s something else entirely.
We’ve seen lots of kids having great periods (cf Bellingham having an incredible first 6 months before returning to normal) but consistency is the hardest part in football. As well as having the right mentality

You do realise Chelsea bought another 15 players who are shite? Not exactly good point to blame fans in Chelsea's case even if Palmer wins Ballon d'Or.

They are also 9th at the moment, and I doubt they would do any worse even if they haven't signed single player in the summer.

He is having great season though, and I have to admit I have underrated him, but it's still individualistic season and Chelsea hardly had any joy from it.

I think it’s very telling that the one bit of business we’ve done this year that’s been a resounding success is a signing that Joe Shields apparently pushed for. Palmer and Lavia were the two transfers that were driven by Shields, with Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart being responsible for most of the ‘flops’.

Obviously too early to tell with Lavia, but given how well the Palmer signing has turned out, and how poor most of the Winstanley/Stewart transfers have been, I wonder if Shields will have a greater influence over incomings in the summer window? I wouldn’t be sad at all to see Stewart and Winstanley’s roles diminished.

The main difference with Palmer is goalscoring.

He had 6 in 41 for Man City and was judged fairly.

If Cole Palmer had played the exact way he has this season but had kept up his previous scoring form and had around 4 goals this season then no one would be talking about him as a success.

He is a good player who has only just added the facet to his game (strongly helped by penalties) that is what is impressing people. He was judged correctly up until he added that and is being judged correctly now that he has done so.

Yes we are blessed and to think some fans didn’t think he would go to the Euros, he was the outstanding player in the U21’s who just won the Euro U21, he’s just an absolute no brainer for Southgate but don’t worry Gareth will definitely mess it up and then end up as United Coach.

Top scorer in the league now. I can definitely see one of the big clubs coming in for him in the summer.

City have better players now and had better players when they sold him. He's at the best place for him.

I literally don't think I even commented on him or the move.

In fact I have a very vague memory of saying something along the lines of "that was a stunning goal in the charity shield, could be a shrewd signing."

But not something or someone I particularly thought about.

Just saying that thinking Bramble would be some world class operator is vastly different from not predicting that a player who scored 6 in 41 for a side that creates boundless chances would become a goal a game scorer.
