The irony is we took the captaincy away from him, yet he's one of the few with the desire to do all he can do to help the team.
He was making better runs with the ball than the wingers.
It was the right decision and the best for him though. Took the pressure off him, all that ‘meme’ bullshit, allowed him to get his confidence back and just be a natural leader on the pitch. And boy do we need it

He is absurdly slow on the ball. If we want to win the premier league he needs to be a bench player at best.
Probably, but challenging for the league is years away. I'd just settle for a reliable back 4 at the moment, get rid of the crocks before him.

Solskjaer said the situation where he was arrested while defending his family on holiday by the pigs over there affected him massively. At the time I thought "good excuse as any", but his performances and leadership during a period where so many players have let us down lends me to believe he might be onto something. He's been sensational

From where I was stood I thought his powerful shot from a tight angle was flying into the top corner!

Decent performance today. There were a couple of occasions where he wasn't under pressure and could've taken the ball down on his chest to control it, but instead he headed it back to a Coventry player. However at this stage in his career, it seems futile to expect him not to head a ball that's about to land within his radius.

He was MOTM today. Defended well despite not being 100% fit, showed desire to get forward, and got a well-taken goal.

Also, and perhaps most importantly, an extremely classy gesture to go straight away to shake hands with the Coventry players.

Was interesting to see him surging forward at the wing, shielded the ball and got a shot on target from tight angle. My instant thinking was - "wow, why is that our REAL left winger, Rashford, has never managed to do similar things for years?"

Absolutely. Look at Antony at the end.
I live in South America and it's kind of a cultural thing and seen as fair game, by some people, if you rub your opponent's nose in it. Which doesn't mean it doesn't happen anywhere else or that all Latinos agree with it - some are actually dead against it - it just might explain why he did it.

But yeah, doesn't mean it isn't classless or embarrassing. Hopefully someone at the club had a polite word with him.

Noticed him going straight to the Coventry players after the last penalty.

Whatever else can be said about him he's a class act
Agreed. He's a good lad. I really think captaincy taken off him has been the best thing
He made a wise career decision waiting it out in the summer knowing he would get his chances with everyone else being a crock. Smart guy.

Somebody else said it but he's the one central defender id keep in the squad as he's the only reliable one to stay fit enough to make a contribution.
In terms of defence id keep him, dalot, willy and give Martinez another season and not rush him.

Lindelof, varane, awb, shaw, would all be gone before him.
Evans probably gone too but maybe use him as a coach or something.
Malacia who knows if he's alive

Given the injury record of our defenders, he’s probably the only centre back that is safe for us this summer.

These two are our leaders. Maguire talking about the world wanting Coventry to win is crazy. Focus on the game buddy. Crazy thing is he was probably our best player and deserved MOM over Bruno. To get anywhere these two guys need to be our worst two players not our best.

Massive respect to Maguire. Like most of us, I wanted him sold and it was clear he wasn't going to feature.

But he put his head down, kept on training without any issues to the club or manager and has worked his way back into (an admittedly heavily depleted) the side.

He's shown great drive and willing since returning and was very good yesterday.

He's definitely made me change my opinion on him!

He would be entering the final year of his contract next season. So you'd want us to give him a contract extension or would you let him go for free at the end of next season?

Depends if he's willing to take a paycut. He's on 190k? Maybe we see if he takes 100k or thereabouts?
If not, we well, and get a squad defender / youth on less wages right?

This guy wasn't willing to go to West Ham last season for lower wages but a longer contract. I don't think he is the type who'll take a wage cut. Also, there is only one style of football you can play with him and I hope we don't play that way next season.

I think he'll be willing to sit on the bench and get paid rather than go somewhere else and play on reduced wages. So, you likely will get your wish for him to stay next season.

Staying at utd for lower wages vs going to west ham for lower wages Is different.

This is a different time now with the summer approaching and is the best time to offer lower wages because he doesn't have the fall back he had last summer.

I don't really understand the hype really. Sure he didn't play badly yesterday but the defense still ended up suffering 3 goals (nearly 5 if you consider Coventry hitting the post and the offside one). That happened against a near mid table Championship side. As a 31 year old CB, with years of EPL experience, Maguire should be leading that defense. Yet its still a mess. If a 30 year old plus can't transfer his experience and wisdom to the rest of the team then what's good in keeping him here? Experience and leadership is precisely few of the things a 30 year old + player can bring to the table

Glasgow resident these days.
He did well defending yesterday, but there is a huge element of 'hoofball' with the guy. Under pressure, he does boot the ball high or wide and breaks down our play. This was evident many times yesterday and he does concede control of the ball a lot. Great defender - average baller.

I've given this a bit of stick, all credit to him, he's put his head down and become a good squad player.
Seeing him going down the wing yesterday reminded me of the forays Pallister and Jim Holton used to go on
Also got a goal, our best player on the pitch against Coventry, went straight over to their players when Rasmus scored.
It would seem the weight of the Captaincy being taken from him, has improved him.

Still think he is not good enough for United but oh wow, hasn't he done a great job of turning perceptions around about his character. He still part of a defence that concedes way too many shots but his effort and determination stands tall above a number of the other squad members.

He has a good head on his shoulders... a very respectful player who from what I can tell, always gives his all.

He may not be the best on the pitch, but his character is levels above others. If he had just a little more pace and better ability on the ball, he'd be a fantastic player and captain material.

In the goat rodeo that has been our 2023-24 season, Maguire has stood as a beacon of professionalism (and has played well too.) I’ve been a huge critic over the years, but credit where it’s due (and probably owe @SadlerMUFC an apology as well!)
Funny how people change. Now he can't do any wrong. I was on here a while back after he had a horrible game and the "experts" at thecaf were giving him 6's and 7's. One day they will be able to think for themself and not just "go with the flow". Or maybe not. But good on you giving him his credit. Funny thing is, I will maintain my original stance. While I don't think he was at fault for most of the goals he was scapegoated for in the past, I do think that if all are healthy, he's be behind Varane for our starting RCB position. Mind you, when I see the way he acts and the heart that he shows, I also think it may have been a little harsh to strip him of his captaincy. He is clearly a leader on and off the pitch. Not saying he should be our fulltime captain, but definitely a vice captain at the very least...

When Leicester signed him I was p*ssed. That's when we should have been in for him and it would have been a good deal...
Certainly a better deal than a world record fee. He would still have had his limiting abilities like his lack of acceleration and total lack of agility so i still think he wouldnt be suited for a dominant team. We did have Mourinho as a manager at that time though. He would have suited that team and style.

Agree with all that - do wonder if being relieved of the captaincy has alleviated a bit of the burden on him and allowed him to play with more freedom. Whatever the case, he’s been a true leader amongst a squad of spineless cowards.

1. He was playing with Casemiro.

2. Two of the goals were bullshit. The first goal was down to modern tactics failing. Dalot was out of position like he's supposed to when we're playing out the back. AWB and others were high up. Onana (who got nothing but praises yesterday but was frequently messing this up) passed it long but it wasn't that long, reached the defender who headed it and they win the 2nd ball, Casemiro is left with 2 players whilst Harry is trying to close down the cross. The goal isn't a defensive mistake, it's a mistake in possession. We see it frequently with every team trying to play out from the back which leaves players out of defensive positions for the counter.

That goal plus the fluke outside the box deflection were the first two shots on target. For 70 minutes there was nothing going on.

First goal was just horrible team defending. Bissaka ball watching too long and Maguire being indecisive as usual. Maguire sees Casemiro has 2, but doesn't go to stop the cross or help Casemiro. In the end, Bissaka tracks back, but Maguire's uselessly standing in no man's land.

Yes Maguire was passing at a decent level for a top side. But he doesn't do that consisently and he's now an atrocious defender for a top side. Too slow to let the team play aggressive attacking football as he can defend in space. He'd be a serviceable backup but earns too much.

That means nothing really. Maguire simply doesn't lead the defence. That's a problem considering his age. At 31 the physical attributes of a player starts to deteriorate. He should be compensating to that with leadership and experience

He's playing exactly as he always had. The difference is the fans perception rather than his play. He's still prone to the odd error, but he's not being scapegoated anymore like he used to be...
