It was different times. I was at Uni that year, and English’s teams had had a paucity of success in Europe for ages, not least because of the five year Heysel ban. United had won the cup winners cup a few years previously, and were really English trailblazers in Europe at that time.

The student union was full of fans from all over the country, only a small portion were actual United fans, but it felt like everyone there was supporting United; because it meant more than just tribalistic glory, it was the return of English football to the international summit after years in the wildnerness. I’ll always remember when that winning goal went in, it was like being surrounded by hundreds of United fans, everyone went crazy, fans from all clubs. It just couldn’t happen today. It was fecking magical.

I hadn’t spoken to my Dad for nearly ten years at that point, but that goal, that treble, it was the beginning of a brief reunion between us before he died, for which I will be forever grateful. Football isn’t always just football. It can mean so much more.

Watched all three. Its amazing. Its just a different world. Now, its all about fitness and shape. Back then, there seemed to be individual battles going on throughout the game. Keane playing box to box. Intimidation from Jaap Stam. The heart of that team is just unmatched. I include the 2008 team in that, who were probably better. The spirit that 99 team had could have beaten anyone.

Watched the first episode. The nostalgia factor is off the scale.

Forgot Schmeichel was fecking throwing them in at times too, can see why he made that decision to leave. He obviously felt he didn't have it in him anymore. I think if he stayed there was potentially another CL or 2 there to be won with that team.

Andy Cole definitely made up for those few missed chances vs West Ham by scoring the winner against Spurs.

Genuinely never knew SAF offered to resign before that season started, not sure if a lot of the stuff is stitched together for dramatic effect or not, but it seems absolutely mental how it went from being so close to massive a shit show to ending in such an unbelievable fashion.

You have to hand it to the players, even if there was shit going on off the pitch, some of them didn't like each other, but once they were on the pitch they didn't let it affect their performance for the team.

Enjoyed the documentary but it did seem like they repurposed a lot of content from the recent Beckham documentary and other documentary’s about the class of 92 etc. I think some of it was even filmed on the same day as the Becham documentary as Ferguson’s wearing the same outfit in both.

You can start to understand Cole's various bad runs of form during a career where he scored over 200 goals (which is an insane return.) Now you'd have people around him helping him with his mood and mental health. Back then, getting bollocked off your wife for missing your sons birth days before the West Ham game was a distraction he just had to get on with. Getting caught shagging some woman on film with Dwight Yorke in the run up to the Treble wasnt ideal either. Fair play to Andy though. I cant think of a time when an England manager was so pubic in their dislike for a player like Hoddle was. And you had that arsehole Green on the BBC radio every week hammering him. Not having friends in the media because he thought they were vermin didnt help either. Its only when you hear him talk about it you go "it wasnt as easy as he made it look."

Sheringham/Keane/Cole is funny shit.
Roy: "Why don't you feck off back to London with your fecking Ferrari and your fecking penthouse".
Teddy: "you fecking Paddy...."

It was really tough beeing new guy in that team.

Watched the first episode there. Reminds me what I was like supporting them growing up. Nostalgia central.

Ferguson offer resignation
Fans annoying him
Trust the process - Ferguson
Lots of friction in dressingroom

I don’t remember any of that but it shows how history can forget the struggles to get to the top.

Putting it mildly

I had forgotten about that - did it create a media shitstorm at the time?
Oh yes. Peter Schmeichel having a holiday because he didnt have a pre-season got front page headlines as well. Our team were the headline makers.

Teddy and Keane played together at Forest. Hated each other then. Like Pogba, you had to be pretty sure of yourself to not think Teddy was a flash cnut. Keane and Cole were exactly the type of people who didnt like that kind of character. But in fairness to Sheringham, he was a veteran and looked like better shape than most of the squad in their 20s. No distractions. Just prepared for every game perfectly.

Terrific stuff, we've all watched Treble related stuff before but there were a couple of new revelations and some different footage used.

That Giggs/Butt/Beckham/Blomqvist midfield selection would've been absolutely torn apart if 3 extra minutes had gone by and United had lost. A reminder of how small the margins in football can be!

Reminds me of the caf tbh. Just asking about the legality of erecting a simple brick wall could descend into chaos.

There was not much options. Keane and Scholes were suspended. With the subs we had, it was the only midfield Fergie could pick.

Wild to think Fergie offered his resignation. Hypothetically, if he went in 98 who would have replaced him?

Always think they're overdoing these nostalgia pieces.

Then I watch and then I'm reminded how much I loved that team and era of football.

The bit at the end, the question to Fergie about gambling, risks. There's the difference between him and Pep. Fergie embraced chaos to some extent, he loves the spectacle, the element of chance and just going for it. Pep is the opposite, all about control, percentage play.

Fergie I could listen to all day.

Phil Neville? Less so.

Johnsen played DM a few times didn't he? That said, I assume Ferguson didn't want to break up Stam/Johnsen and Berg was unavailable for the final as well I think.

Makes me sad looking at SAF so old.
I thought about that too. He's the same age now as my grandfather was when he passed :(

Watched it all today and the treble was so close to not being won at various points. Injuries, suspensions, hard fought battles.
A true warrior story.

Compare it to City last year and their version is completely sterile, boring and illegitimate. 2-3 WC players in every position, state of the art facilities, all facilitated by breaking rules that all other teams have had to abide by.

Consider the group of death, the semi against Juve and nature and circumstances of the final. Yes its quite meh'

Brilliant doc, loved seeing and hearing from the old players again. After the season we’ve just had it was a welcome pick me up.

Irt SAF resigning in 98, hypothetically may have turned it over to Kidd in 98, dunno how that pans out but probably not well. Guess that depends on when he would have resigned as later in the summer would have left them with most managers off the market. But, both Jupp Heynckes and Carlos Alberto Parreira were available that summer.
