This was fun to do, So many options. Your squad has to have players from 11 different leagues and you are only allowed one player per nationality.

My attempt

Dzajic SRB Shevchenko UKR/UKR Messi ARG/LL
Charlton ENG
Voronin USSR Matthäus GER/BL
Krol NED Baresi ITA Figueroa CHI/URU C. Alberto BRA
Preud'homme BEL

Subs: Eusebio POR (obviously a better player than Sheva but I like how Sheva gets the best of Messi/Dzajic); a free pick from a French/L1 pool; couple of others, obviously.

edit: League form, obviously.

Lovely teams so far! Puskás should also be a shoe-in for this criteria, IMO, considering he qualifies for Hungary and Honvéd at national team and club level, respectively — starting him over say Ronaldo or Romário gives you the option of selecting Pelé (Santos), peak Ajax Cruyff, Rijkaard in the Eredivisie — or perhaps Di Stéfano at Madrid. Platini for Ligue 1 with Nancy and Saint-Étienne also stands out — not quite peak back-to-back-to-back Ballon D'Or version but still extremely good (twice on the Ballon D'Or podium). :)

Would probably go with this, after giving the concept a moment's thought — not the most keenly balanced setup, perhaps, but I just couldn't resist the temptation to assemble that Front-4:

Puskás (Honvéd)
Best (United)
Pelé (Santos)
Messi (Barcelona)
Masopust (Dukla Prague)
Rijkaard (Ajax)
Maldini (Milan)
Beckenbauer (Bayern)
Figueroa (Peñarol)
Amoros (Monaco)
Yashin (Dynamo Moscow)

with slight alterations mine looks like @Invictus as well.

Eusebio (Benfica)
Best (United)
Pelé (Santos)
Messi (Barcelona)
Rijkaard (Ajax)
Xavi (Spain)
Maldini (Milan)
Beckenbauer (Bayern)
Figueroa (Peñarol)
Amoros (Monaco)
Dasayev (Spartak Moscow)

Dasayev is purely for personal preference and Eusebio IMO would be a better fit with his pace up front.

Can't match these 4-2-3-1s, but a more vintage 4-2-4 for consideration:

Dzajic (Zvezda) - Puskas (Honved) - Kocsis (Zurich) - Messi (Barcelona)
Rijkaard (Ajax) - Matthaus (Bayern)
Maldini (Milan) - Moore (West Ham) - Figueroa (Penarol) - Carlos Alberto (Santos)
Yashin (Spartak)

Not to blame you — who cares about the Russian league, really, but it's a bit as if I said Jimmy Johnstone (Rangers)
He played for Dynamo Moscow. Dasayev played for Spartak — that's probably why it was on your mind.

Well yes, but let's not beat about the bush - that was unforgivable. :o
