2-1 loss vs 0-0 draw as an away team in the first leg of a CL tie.

Didn’t the Caf have this same discussion right before we thrashed Roma 7-1?

0-0 first leg at home is best, but 0-0 first leg away seems a terrible result cuz pressure will be on you both to score and extra pressure to stop your opponent from scoring.

Huh..??

There's actually no difference, you'd still need to win the home leg by at least 1-0
Well then there is a difference.

The away goal counts in a 2-2 aggregate.

If you then subsequently won the home leg 3-2 the other team would go through on a 3-3 aggregate, so its clearly different.

If we’d have drawn 0-0 against Roma in 2007 in Rome I don’t think we’d have won 7-1 at Old Trafford.

I offer no evidence why but I’d rather lost trying to score and get an away goal than try for a 0-0. It sends a message psychologically that you can score and opens the game up IMO.

Of course draw is a better result but I'm sure 0-0 away is nerving come the second leg. One slip and you need to score twice for the home team. I'm sure it affects the tactics as well. Losing 1-2 you're given the rights to attack more freely.

If you lose 2-1 and the opponet score you still need to score 2 to go through... doh

Yeah, nice moving of the goal posts there....

Lets see what the maths tells us.

With a 2-1 away loss in the first leg, the following one-goal margins will take you through in the second:

1-0

With a 0-0 draw in the first leg, the following one-goal margins will take you through in the second:

1-0

2-1

3-2

4-3

Etc

According to the laws of probability, there are infinite opportunities to go through with a one-goal-margin win from a 0-0 first leg, compared to a 2-1 first leg loss.

Seems fairly conclusive to me.
