I’m bored with not much to do at work, so thought I’d start a discussion on who you guys think are the 5 best players in the PL right now. By best, I’m talking about you effectiveness based on their position, ie Jack Grealish is probably a better technical footballer than Virgil Van Dijk, but Van Dijk is a better player than Grealish. You get what I mean anyway

1. De Bruyne
2. Van Dijk
3. Salah
4. Aubameyang
5. Pogba

KdB is just streets ahead of everyone in overall terms. Best midfielder in the world arguably.

Van Dijk, again would likely make a World XI so hard to ignore him.

Bruno Fernandes. If we extrapolated his impact since he came in back to the first half of last season where we were undeniably missing something, we would probably have worried Man City for second place.

Ederson - one of the best keepers around and I think the best in the league so I'd give the Brazilian the nod.

Aubameyang has been shining in a poor Arsenal team for a while. Was top scorer season before last despite the Gunners doing next to nothing.
Arsenal seem to have strengthened so he might be even better this season.

Honourable mention to Pogba who is easily top 5 talent wise but sadly hasn't done as much as the players above recently.

Bale and Thiago might have something to say about this very soon.

2. van Dijk
3. Salah
4. Mane
5. Tough one. Probably Sterling.

Thiago would make it into the top 5, too, but not sure at which position. Aubameyang, Kane, Aguero and Son are also good shouts. And Bale, Greenwood, Pulisic, Havertz and Werner could turn out contenders as well, depending how they settle in (I know Greenwood already has, but the second season is sometimes particularly tough). Very interesting season ahead in the EPL.

De Bruyne, a big gap, Salah, Van Dijk, Mane, Trent.

As much as it pains me to say it.

What has Fernandes or Ederson done recently?

I would argue that Alisson and TAA should get some consideration if the criterium is "effectiveness based on position". Both are the best in the world at their respective position (Alisson alongside Oblak, arguably, or even below him some would argue).

Van Dijk and De Bruyne are no brainers, probably. I'd hesitate to put Aubameyang in there since he's a level below Lewandowski imo, and rather on the level of Aguero and Kane. Sterling shouldn't be in there at all, purely as wingers Salah and Mane should get in over him in that case.

Laporte of the 18/19 season should also get some consideration, among the best CBs in the world.

Have the second most goal contributions in the league behind KdB since his arrival and be far and away our best midfielder, leading us to clawing back a 14 point gap to get 3rd place.

Yeah exactly this, he was the catalyst for our blistering form as we relenessly reeled in LCFC and CFC.

I don't think we would have gotten Top 4 looking back, without him.

  1. De Bruyne
  2. Van Dijk
  3. Sadio Mane
  4. Mo Salah
  5. TAA/Thiago as he's now signing
Sterling, Aguero, Aubameyang, Bruno and Pogba would be the next 5. Not counting goalkeepers, but Allisson the only one who would be in otherwise.

But... are goalkeepers really footballers? I mean... really?

pretty hard because there are probably a lot that are on par with each other. Through Fernandes in because for that brief spell at the start he was sublime. I’d also have Allison over Ederson but DeGea if he pulls his finger out is still the best for me.

Exactly mate. No chance we get top 4 without him. Imagine Lingard or Pereira in the 10 slot in those must-win games from February. That’s at least 4 less wins, and more missed penalties due to our profligacy from the spot before Bruno’s arrival.

:D

They don't get consideration for "best players in the league" all that often, but based on the criterium mentioned in the OP, I think they should in that case.

If you did this 4 years ago, there was no question that DDG was a top 5 player in the league going by that criterium imo.

Too hard for me to decide any of it really, so many players are hot and cold. eg. Even Virgil has had some horror moments and IMO I think he just picks the easy side way pass far too often, something that anyone else would be massively criticised for. Salah and Alexander-Arnold are two others for sure, but I always feel like I'd want even more for Salah despite how ridiculously good he is at times. Trent also is not a good defender and that has to be a major part of his job. Sterling, Kane, Bruno Fernandes, Aubameyang are all in the argument as well.

The only non-debatable thing, IMO, is that De Bruyne is far and away the best. Not even close.

Annoyingly 3 of the top 5 are Liverpool players.

1. KDB
2. VVD
3. Mane
4. Salah
5. Aubameyang

Liverpool would likely also have 2 more players from 5-10 if we include keepers.

1. Kevin De Bruyne (one of the most complete midfielders I’ve ever seen. A specialist and master in almost every facet of a midfielders game)
2. Sadio Manè (genuinely think he’s a better footballer than Salah).
3. Virgil Van Dijk (not much competition for the most dominant CB in the league)
4. Mohamed Salah
5. Bruno Fernandes

5th was the difficult for me as well. The top 4 pick themselves right now although that can change quickly.

I went for Sterling, but could easily have gone for Aubamayang for carrying his team or Pogba for having the most natural ability or Bruno given his one half year. Heck. even Alisson and TAA would be in with a shout. Basically its a toss up for 5th. But if I had to pick one of those players in my team I'd go for Pogba. Given this is about "effectiveness", it's between Sterling and Aubamayang for me.

Yeah, for me the option was Auba but then I dont see why it should be Auba when Vardy scored more goals. So thought I will go with them or Bruno, TAA, Sterling. It was too close, so just left it blank.

These things will change quickly like you said. One good season and there will be new players in the list.

I think you guys should actually wait to watch newly signed players play before you rank them. I remember just before we signed Di Maria, some people on here were ranking him first in a similar thread of top PL players and look how he turned out
