Will probably need to press pause on reading for a month or so as I really need to get my thesis finished and submitted.

Paradise Regained is the City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold of 17th Century epic poetry. #notmymilton. Outrageous Conduct... is fascinating if you are interested in what goes on behind the camera during the making of a film, or if you just want to see what terrible people John Landis and Steven Spielberg are. With Wolf Hall it took a little time to familiarise myself with names and places but when I started to piece it all together it really gripped me. Bring Up The Bodies is one of the best reading experiences I've ever had. I'm totally sold on Mantel's genius, every other paragraph I would be asking myself how she conjured up that bit of magic or what crazed imagination conceived of that imagery. The way she paints the bleakest scenes with an almost depraved black humour give the books a sense of forbidden delight. The Giant O'Brien works just as well and might make a better introduction to her work. I'll be in the queue on the day that the final Cromwell book drops. Sula is typically great, up there with Song of Solomon. The Woolf short collection contains some of the best writing I've ever read. Likewise Lighthouse is patently brilliant but I found the psychology so dense and the inner voices relentless to the point of suffocation. I've enough head daemons of my own thanks Virginia. The Shirley Jackson collection is a peach. The Lottery is the least interesting of the collection; an easy, clever but rather gimmicky set piece - perhaps the reason it has such a huge reputation. The complex characters and oppressive atmospheres exist in the other stories. Some incredible astute social observations attatched to disturbing and gripping tales. Steppenwolf was great, although I couldn't fully commit to the novel's late transcendental leap. Wonder - R.J. Palacio was the biggest surprise. It's YA sentimental optimism would usually put me off but it doesn't shy away from exposing raw human truths and it has some sharp insights into the nature of cruelty, adolescence and isolation. Zora Neale is a wonder of African American folk literature and American literature in general. Put her alongside Faulkner and Toni Morrison. The Spike Milligan's are fun but very of their time eek!

It's been good though. As silly and arbitrary as this type of challenge is (Tip#036: select short books to get back on target), it provides a real motivation to keep reading good stuff and it's kept me away from brain rotting webnews outlets. I have some comics and poetry lined up to mix things up a little for the rest of the year. I'm going to try and keep up the pace.

And there is plenty of time left. If you stopped following Ben Shapiro you'd make it no problem.

Came across this thread today, and knowing that my wife is a book worm, I asked her how many books she has read so far this year. 40!!!. Must have too much time on her hands.

I read that Akutagawa recently. So good. Given the age and translation of the texts I didn't expect it to be such an easy and delightful read. Hell Screen was wild.

Pretty impressive. Takes some discipline to accomplish. Embarrassed to admit that it's been a while since I've actually read a book. Used to read a lot more when I was younger when there weren't as many technological distractions.

@oneniltothearsenal Javier Marias has been on my list for some time. What did you think?
Loved it.

From the entire list, the three authors I discovered in the last year that I absolutely love are Marias, Krasznahorkai and Can Xue.

Your Face Tomorrow is a wonderful psychological novel and I have heard good things about his others. Definitely check him out!

@oneniltothearsenal Have you seen Werckmeister Harmonies? Haven't read the book but Tarr's movie is excellent (inspired by, or an adaptation, I forget which)

Edit: Melancholy of Resistance.
Yes! I saw that after I finished the book and I thought it was a great movie that did justice to the novel. Tarr apparently worked with Krasznahorkai for a lot of his movies. I plan to see them all eventually.

Amazing work! Congratulations. 104 books in a year is quite a remarkable achievement considering you aren't reading Choose Your Own Adventure and Goosebumps

Cheers, you too. The target was two books per week at the start of the year and it got a little close to collapsing a couple of times but I puffed it up with some shorter books and a few re-reads of old favourites. It did mean I had to mostly forgo anything really long or dense but it did allow me to clear most of the backlog that had been sat on the shelf for a while. At times it felt like too much, I'll take it easier next year. I'll probably be extensively mining your list.

Pour one out for Eboue and his six books for the year.

This is the year. I'll be commuting a lot more so I can get plenty done with audiobooks.

Is it worth it given that? I have a couple of massive books on the shelf I want to read and I want to finally tackle Crime and Punishment and David Copperfield, which have been gathering dust for years.

I really enjoyed Crime and Punishment. I'd recommend it thoroughly.
