Since the 2011 CL final against Barca:

11/12: out in the group stage
12/13: out in the RO16
13/14: out in the QF
14/15: no CL
15/16: out in the group stage
16/17: no CL
17/18: out in the RO16
18/19: out in the QF
19/20: no CL
20/21: out in the group stage

Never past the QF's in a decade and the QF's were reached in only 2 years.

Shocking underperformance over the course of a decade.

Meh, its pretty much the standard for this club though. Us doing anything of note in Europe is the rare occurrence.

Hi Jose, how's life at Spurs?

Did anyone actually disagree with him? If he said that at one of the European giants, he wouldn't have made it back home in one piece that night.

I watched our fanbase heroworship for another 9 months until he got sacked.

Are you surprised? We haven’t competed (seriously) for the domestic title in about 7 years.

What do you mean? Last season Liverpool won the PL but you don't want to watch Chelsea, City and Utd in Europe?

It should be Champions League by name, Champions League by nature.

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of non-league winners not in the Champions league, in all honestly.

Meh, Champions League as been dead to me anyway since BT won broadcasting rights to it.

Used to be great on ITV and Sky Sports.

So you wouldn't want to have watched United in the CL this year?

Pretty damming when put like that.
I will make it even worse:
We have only won 2 (!!!) CL knockout games in that period: one against Olympiacos in 2014 (I was at OT for that, thanks RvP:drool:) and one against PSG in 2019.

You should start a rally.

It's insane that our best CL campaign in the last 10 years was led by David Moyes

We don’t think or operate like a giant club so it’s no surprise really. Pathetic.

It’s not underperformance, it’s been about right in line with our quality.

When you see it like that you realise just how bad we have been. No wonder we celebrated the PSG game so much. That was our best result in 10 years of Champions League football. I’m going to cry myself to sleep now whilst the Glazers and Woodward continue to make the wrong decisions for this club.

Why? BT’s coverage is way better than Sky’s was. Only negative is some of the commentators.

I'm not too fussed about coverage, but there was nothing wrong with ITV's and Sky's coverage, Roy Keane was at his best on ITV.

I'm not paying £25 a month to watch Champions League when it used to be free on ITV and free on Sky Sports (or should i say part of my Sky Sports package), other than Champions League finals, I've not watched Champions League in years because of BT.

I feel like watching Rio, Scholes and Hargreaves is like watching AFTV or The Tuesday Club, or any coverage of Arsenal in Wenger’s final 10 years.

At this point you could rehash coverage from any point in United last five years and it would be just as applicable: potential DoFs, lack of a top striker, shaky centre backs, unclear playing style etc.

I’ll keep saying this, I couldn’t care less for the CL at this point. I want us to get back to being top dogs in the PL first

Biggest club in the world, mate.

The main problem for me is that, still to this day, we've refused to revolutionise our football after humblings.

08/09 vs Barca
10/11 vs Barca
11/12 vs Bilbao

Even City took note and made sure - after being bought - that their core footballing philosophy would be cohesive, possession based football instead of just buying players and hoping for the best. In doing so, they've had a brilliant decade whilst we've floundered behind.

Funnily enough Van Gaal played possession football. His football also cured insomnia.

I think LvG had the right ideas but couldn't translate them to the pitch. We, imo, should've hired a manager of the same views on how to play, but who was more modern, but we did another 180, changed our style again, and undid everything of the past two years.

I've said before that I wanted Poch to replace Fergie (after Pep had already been snapped up by Bayern) but him replacing van Gaal would've probably been better as he followed the same possession based views on having your team play, but was more progressive in that he also got his teams pressing as a unit and knew when to go direct.

In the long run, I think that would've been more beneficial to us instead of hoping for quick fixes and instant success.

Poch replacing Fergie in 2013? What was Poch's reputation like when he was appointed by Southampton?

Not very high, and I don't think anyone else wanted him at that point, but I thought the way he got his teams to play (in a relatively quick fashion after joining a club) was very impressive and just what we needed.

7 years later and I'm still of that opinion!

Tbf this thread is about being irrelevant in the CL and City - while having success domestically and as a result being in the CL every season - have been irrelevant in Europe as well.

Fair point!

Still, post Fergie, we've unfortunately been a bit irrelevant in the league, too!

I said what I said, non league winners shouldn't even be in the competition. That we are in it is fine enough, I have no grand expectations of sides who can't even win their domestic league competitions in a glorified cup competition with music.

Look at our performance over the last 10 years in general. What were you expecting in the CL?

To not lose to Istanbul. To not be 0-2 quickly and then 0-3 down to Leipzig, I don't think it's asking for a lot. If we lost last night with a good game, it wouldn't bother as much. I just don't understand why this team starts so sloppily all the time

Istanbul was what killed us. That was a must win game in retrospect.

But over the last 10 years our record in Europe is par on course for our quality.
