Time to move on, admits Beckham

David Beckham has reluctantly accepted his future lies away from Manchester United. In his first interview since the club confirmed Italian and Spanish clubs had "expressed a firm interest", Beckham made it clear he is prepared to move if United no longer want him. "I've never said that I would never move away from Manchester," he said, "and I've never said that I would end my career there."
Five weeks since issuing a statement saying he wants to stay at Old Trafford, the England captain now seems increasingly resigned to the idea that Sir Alex Ferguson considers him dispensable.

Asked directly about his future, he told the Los Angeles Times yesterday: "There will always be changes at a club like Manchester United. With all the big teams, there are always going to be changes."

One option that would have appealed to Beckham seemed to close yesterday, however, when Milan's president Silvio Berlusconi ended their interest, saying: "There are many better ways of spending money."

However, Berlusconi was similarly dismissive of a move for the Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta last year; a month later he was a Milan player.

Beckham emphasised he had not instigated the transfer discussions and was not seeking to leave. "The rumours have been going on for two months now. About a month ago, it was Real Madrid and now it's Barcelona. But I'm a Manchester United player and I'm contracted for another two years. As long as they want me, then I'll stay."

Yet he is also acutely aware that United's hierarchy have answered that question by touting him across the continent. And on Thursday there will be another significant development when Pini Zihavi, the Israeli agent employed by United to get the best price, flies in for talks with senior officials and Beckham's advisers, Tony Stephens and Jon Holmes.

Zihavi is a close associate of Joan Laporta, the Barcelona presidential candidate who has promised to sign Beckham if he wins the club elections this weekend. However, Beckham has reservations about joining a club who have not yet qualified for next season's Uefa Cup.

That leaves Real Madrid as the most likely suitors, although it has also become clear that Beckham and his wife would prefer a move to Italy. He might also be aggrieved to find that his status at Old Trafford is not such that the fans will side with him against Ferguson.

Richard Kurt, author of several books on the club, said: "If Beckham played for another club and was available for £30m, should we buy him? Every United fan to whom I've put that question has said 'no'.

"There's a huge divergence in those fans who never go to Old Trafford, and are up in arms, to those who go week in week out. He's an icon to the new-age football fan, the mothers and the girls. But the regular fans are two to one in favour of letting him go."

Beckham admits United career could be finished
By Sam Wallace (Filed: 10/06/2003)

David Beckham has broken his silence on Manchester United's announcement this week that they are in talks to sell him and admitted for the first time since reports about his future surfaced that his 14-year career at the club could be over.

David Beckham: 'I never said I'd move away from Man Utd'
The England captain is still on holiday in Los Angeles where he has been told of United's admission on Saturday that chief executive Peter Kenyon has been talking to possible bidders and has a meeting planned on Thursday with representatives of Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta.

"I've never said that I'd never move away from Manchester, and I've never said that I'd end my career there," Beckham said in an interview with a Los Angeles newspaper. "There will always be changes at a team like Man United.

"With all the big teams there are always going to be changes because you look to strengthen the team whether you win three trophies or you win one. There's always going to be changes.

"These rumours have been going on for two months now. About a month ago it was Real Madrid and now it's Barcelona. But I'm a Man United player. I'm contracted to Man United for another two or three years, I think. As long as they want me, then I'll stay."

Beckham's agent, Tony Stephens, is due to meet Laporta's envoy, Sandro Rosell, in London on Thursday along with the Israeli agent, Pini Zahavi, who has been given the task of negotiating the sale of Beckham on United's behalf.

However, Beckham maintained that his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson has not been completely destroyed in a season in which he has been hit in the face by a boot kicked by the United manager and then dropped for crucial matches against Arsenal and Real Madrid.

"Despite what people say about me and Sir Alex Ferguson, he's been a father figure to me," Beckham said. "I've been at Man United for 14 years now and without him I wouldn't be the player or the person that I am today. He had the confidence when I was 18 years old to put me in the first team along with a number of other young players.

"Of course you have your ups and downs with any boss in any job, but with me and him it gets highlighted just a little bit more."

Beckham spoke on the same day that AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi announced that his club did not have the funds to buy Beckham. "There are many better ways of spending money that has been earned with many sacrifices other than hiring Mr Beckham," the Italian prime minister said.

Berlusconi, who made the comments during a state trip to Israel, may not have the transfer funds to pay for Beckham but he may yet consider a player exchange with the Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko a possibility.

Beckham also revealed that he has had a pin inserted in the broken scaphoid bone in his right wrist and, though he will have the cast removed in a week, is still doubtful whether he would be fit to tour America with United on July 19 - should he still be at the club.

Meanwhile, the former Real Madrid striker Emilio Butragueno, who now works as the club's deputy manager, has warned that Beckham will have to sign over his image rights to the Spanish club if he chooses to sign for them this summer.

Beckham earns millions from individual deals with companies such as Adidas as well as being the face of Manchester United's sponsor, Vodafone.

However, Butragueno said: "When a player signs for Real Madrid he must give up his image rights for the club to manage. This is a must, a policy of the club, but of course we would respect previous agreements."

So basically when he goes it won't be because he wanted to it will be because they wanted to sell him?

Sounds like Beckham is trying to saving face with the fans to me.

It doesn't to me.

Popular opinion seems to be that Beckham is happy to stay at United but in his own words (allegedly) is being treated like a piece of meat.

Sorry Livvie but as there's been tons on this subject, I haven't read all the opinions, so may I ask what your feelings are on this subject?

From what's been said, it doesn't appear that Beckham wants to go but is being marketed by the club.

I know it's a business (but that's another issue), but loyalty is quite a rare thing these days, and I think Beckham is a loyal United player, and has never given the club the kind of problems George Best did for instance. I think he is happy to stay at United, and his contract should be honoured if that's the case.

Obviously, we only have what we read in the newspapers so shouldn't set too much store by that. If the club sell him against his wishes, I will lose a lot of respect for them.

Personally I wish Becks portrayed himself more as a footballer and less as a film star, but he does seem easily manipulated. He's still a United player through and through tho, and that's lot harder to replace than anything.

Yap. Stam's case is the most obvious example. It is a very strange thing happens in football as most other business in this world won't be like this. For example, imagine one day your boss come to you and say, "I have just sold you to another company. So pack your luggage and go there tomorrow". It's strange. People are bought and sold like a good. But then it's just what happening in the football world now.

Oh? Look at Giggsy's reaction when similar rumours were about earlier in the season. He said again and again, he did not want to leave United, he would retire rather than move on... He left everyone in no doubt.

Becks has not been so unequivocal. His reaction to Real's possible interest a few weeks ago was the classic, 'Real are a big club and it is flattering' etc. Now he says, 'I never said I would end my career at United.'

I am not castigating him for this, it is his only alternative when United is so obviously interested in selling him.

Kudos to Giggs but I think he faced a slightly different situation then; he still had Fergie's backing & therefore the board's despite media speculation.

In Becks' case, the media speculation was coupled with a initial subtle hint by Kenyon, that despite rubbishing the 'Real rumours' he went on to add a rider that Utd wud contemplate seriously a £38 mil offer which I spotted & commented upon but got slammed down by some posters here; & it cresendoed with Kenyon finally admiting that he was having 'secret talks' with Barca & that Fergie was fully aware of the goings-on!

Now, if you were in Becks' shoes, what will that tell you of your employers?

Well said. Relationship is a two-way road. Yet some supporters seems demanding the sole loyality of the player himself. I don't know why someone can still have the type of thinking that "if Beckham wants to stay, he can stay". No matter what Stam was just an obvious example that when the club wants to sell a player the player can do little about it.
