FC Barcelona have extended the contract of the young talent Ilaix Moriba (Photo). The 16-year-old midfielder signed a new contract until June 30, 2022. The Catalans set the exit clause for the attacker at 100 million euros – this would make Ilaix Moriba more expensive than Barça’s professional players Rafinha (26) or Jasper Cillessen (29), among others.
The reason for the successful negotiations is probably due to the amount of salary the Guinea-born talent will earn. He will become the highest paid player from the Barça youth academy La Masia. This information was revealed by a transfer glitch: The Catalans sent the final offer for Ilaix Moriba by e-mail to the wrong addresses – namely the city Rival Espanyol. There, those responsible were "baffled" by the sum Barça offered the 16-Year-old. The sources had jokingly declared the youngster would "earn more than some of Espanyol's professionals."
The Spanish Champion ultimately prevailed in signing Moriba’s extension against a host of competitors trying to sign the youngster. He could have left the club on a free transfer (only having to pay training compensation) in the summer. Premier League clubs Manchester City and FC Chelsea, as well as Borussia Dortmund are said to have shown interest.
