Good team Marcred, not sure about the inclusion of Frank Beckenbauer though ;)

D'oh! I've edited it.

There seems to be a lack of Ronaldo on the expert's lists. How can the World Cups all time top scorer, a player who is regarded as one of the best forwards ever seen, not make it into the team!?

Leaving out the likes of Baresi, Matthaus, Cruyff, Maldini, Eusebio, Moore etc, was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

Buffon-Cafu-Thuram-Matthaus-Maldini-Dunga-Pele/Jairzinho-Zidane-Maradona-Linekar

Mostly wanted to keep it to the ones I've seen more of.....but obviously made an exception for Jairzinho....then realized I couldn't not have Pele. Or Ronaldo in reality, but yeah, Linekar shat himself and still continued, total respect.

Yeah it's incredibly hard to leave out Ronaldo, Eusabio, Didi, Carlos Alberto etc etc

Could easily pick about 10 different sides from that shortlist and be happy with all of them.

I've only picked players that I've seen play before. I know this team would get destroyed in real life, but I couldn't pick a 5 man midfield with two holding players.

Buffon

Lahm
Cafu
Desailly
Roberto Carlos

Dunga
Xavi
Zidane
Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo
Klose

Attacking Strength - 7 (really? ...)
Defensive Strength - 7
Discipline - 3
Experience - 6

Played in 6 World Cups
...but Won 8 World Cups
Appeared in 15 finals
Kept 35 clean sheets
Scored 38 goals

Why is Cristiano Ronaldo an option on this list? Compared to the other options, he's done nothing at the World Cup aside knocking England out on penalties, and who hasn't done that!?

Looking at the description they've put him in there because of the wink. Pathetic BBC.

Makes you wonder why Podolski isn't....beat him (unjustly maybe) to the Young Player award, and went further in 2010, and almost certainly has more assists in doing so on top of 5 goals to 2.

Cristiano should be nowhere near it if we're talking World Cups.

I would say good team, but I think it's impossible not to pick a good team from their list.

Yes, a bit strange that.
Most notable World Cup moment was his wink after Wayne Rooney's early sending off in 2006.
They say it as if anyone in the world other than a few Daily Mail readers in London or Liverpool actually care about the incident. It wasn't even the biggest incident of the tournament that year.

Exactly. Podolski shouldn't be on the list either but he's got more right to be there than Ronaldo based on World Cup performances.

Really? Says it all really. To be fair, the wink was hilarious though.

You think Cristiano is more worthy of a place in a best ever World Cup team than Maradona? Not having a go or anything, just curious.

At least you have big Ronaldo on your team though, what a player. And Zidane, every team should have Zidane.

Well to be honest it was a straight choice between Ronaldo and Maradona for me and Diego has a huge world cup history compared to Ronnie but would love to see Cristiano floating around Pele and the big fella.

Fair enough, it's just down to preference. I'd still pick Maradona over Cristiano in that sense as well though. Diego, Pele and big Ronaldo up front would utterly devastating to watch.

Are you not shoehorning players in there playing Ronaldo as a central midfielder, also someone like Xavi is far more worthy of a place than Ronaldo.

True I am shoehorning players in, but I was looking at Zidane and Matthaus as central midfielders. Cristiano is only in my world cup team as he can be a stunning winger and goal threat, rather than a proven world cup performer

How is every one obtaining stats for the team? When I confirm my team nothing really happens except a window of text appears.

I'd like to think that side is well balanced. Mixture of players I've seen and legendary players that I've heard about from various resources or seen clips of. Not sure about gentile but he kept maradonna quiet and may complement Beckenbauer. The front two should complement eachother well. I love Germany for some unknown reason hence they are littered throughout the side. Omissions of others were due to team balance and taking into consideration that this has to be based on world cup performances and success.

Would be great if a simulator was created to test each team against eachother. Maybe we could debate it like they do with the drafts.

@Lynk; Any joy getting the stats? I'm using mobile devices and have had no success after multiple attempts and maybe that's the problem.
