James Acaster (yeah, me neither) reckons that 2016 was the greatest ever year for music.

According to the linked article 1966, 1971 and 1984 have all been touted by various publications.

What say you?
He's a comedian, so I don't think he was being entirely serious. And if you've not heard of him, watch his 4 part Netflix specials. I wasn't sold when I first saw him on TV, but it's honestly one of the best stand-up things I've ever seen.

Damn. Didn't realise rock was the only genre allowed if a year wants to be considered the best ever. :(

There's just nothing greater than those hard yet gentle guitar riffs from Miles Davis.

18 albums there. 16 of them would be classed as either pop rock or experimental rock.

Songs from a Room is naff as well.

Trout Mask Replice is mostly Blues, I'd say. I don't really get the point you're trying to make.

That the list isn't that diverse. (I'd argue it's experimental/art rock but that's splitting hairs).

To be fair, they missed off loads of other great albums in the same genre for 1969 such as MC5s Kick Out the Jams, The Stooges debut album, The Gilded Palace of Sin by Flying Burrito Brothers, Can's Monster Movie.

That year there were great folk albums by Bert Jansch (Birthday Blues), Fairport Convention (What We Did on Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking and Liege & Lief) and Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline.

Soul from The Temptations (Cloud Nine), Sly and the Family Stone (Stand!) and Isaac Hayes (Hot Buttered Soul).

Johnny Cash's Live at San Quentin came out, as did Dusty Springfield's Dusty in Memphis.

1969 was a pretty decent year for lots of types of music.

For me 67 is up there. Debut albums by The Doors and Pink Floyd, Sgt Peppers by The Beatles, debut album of Janis Joplin's first band Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced. All pretty iconic stuff.

2016 was good. Blonde is probably one of the albums of the decade. It had TLOP, Malibu and more too. I enjoyed 2017 S well. This year the major albums have mainly been misses for me apart from Tyler and a few others. I realise mine are mainly from a rap/hip-hop point of view.
Blonde might be my favourite album ever and TLOP is great but IMO I would rank 2015 >2016. Lots of great stuff came out that year, TPAB, Summertime 06, Rodeo, I don't like shit i don't go outside, GO:ODAM, IYRTITL, Barter 6, The Documentary 2, King Push, DS2, B4DA$$, At Long Last ASAP etc. "

Maybe I just hold a special place for it because it was the first year I started getting into hip-hop/rap but yeah I think were more great releases in 15 than 16

Can something be the "best" if the sample size is so small?
The sample size is always going to be relatively small. No year is going to have the best in a diverse range of genres, simple because the most influential releases in a specific genre are often bunched together and a product of their times.

I like 91 - i was into grunge and heavy metal as a kid, 69 is pretty impossible to beat though.
Nirvana - Nevermind
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Metallica - Their black album
Guns N' Roses - Use your Illusion 1 and 2
Pearl Jam - Ten
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Pixies, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, REM, Blur, Smashing Pumpkins all released good stuff that year too
It was good music to grow up with but harder to enjoy as an adult. And the range of music that was available in 69 isn't really there, or not to the same extent

I'm guessing everyone on here is just googling websites that show years with album releases .

Il put forward 1992, some quality and genre defining albums.

Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine. Probably my favourite album of all time and made a young 12 yo me think about the world.

REM - Automatic for the People. Not everyone's cup of tea but a very talented group.

Dr Dre - The Chornic. First time I ever heard quality Hip Hop, got me hocked.

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambiet Works 85-92. Mind blowing.

Plenty of others like Eric Clapton, Pantera and the Beastie boys.

Can't seem to find the thread about songs. But can anyone recommend me some good rap songs about life. As long as it's not about money, women, drugs blah blah blah.

Common is a decent place to start. His albums Be and One Day are probably his two best.

Resurrection is my favourite by him. Possibly my favourite rap album ever, actually. That, Illmatic and Liquid Swords are tough to separate for me.
