Cafu vs Dani Alves

People who says Dani Alves is not great defending dont know about football or just dont saw him play. Watch him vs Ronaldinho when he was at Sevilla. Or vs Ronaldo when he was at Barça. Or vs Neymar when he was at Juve. Of course if he is up and the team loses the ball he wont be defending the counter, that doesnt mean hes not great defending, he's actually very very good defending 1v1 and has a very good positiong and concentration when he has to defend.

I don't see how Cafu or Zanetti were better athletes than Alves. Cafu was more physical, but I don't remember him having a running capacity of Alves. The amount of tracking back, pressing, and off the ball runs that Alves did was astounding. Zanetti was also a tireless runner, but his skillset wasn't as diverse, and he's more famous for his consistency and longevity than for athletic superiority. Alves is such a unique player who often isn't rated highly enough.

Cafu top speed was really something out of this world. You couldn't really outrun him.

1. Zanetti / Cafu
2. Lahm
3. Alves

(Thuram and Carlos Alberto deserve to be in the conversation if its open to all RBs)

Top 5 RB:
1. Djalma Santos
2. Carlos Alberto
3. Cafu
4. Thuram
5. Vogts

honorable mentions: Bergomi, Zanetti, Amoros, Lahm, JL Andrade.

Alves is the best fullback i've ever seen. Personally i don't rate the world cup, for me it's a fun tournament during summer where tactics and the overall style of play seem to be quite simplistic. However a whole season at club football, including the UCL, where teams are being coached year in and year out are for me the true barometer. Alves has been the best fullback for over a decade in Europe. He's the best for me and edges the likes of Cafu.
