Probably? Avatar was fecking shite.
I haven't seen it since it came out in fairness, I remember it being rubbish but I slightly toned down my opinion in case it's worse in my memory than reality.

City of God, Requiem for a Dream, American History X off the top of my head are miles better and i wouldn't even class them as all time classics

Agree on that. But it's still the best from last 25 years. No one has offered a film that is better yet, part from Padd 2.
Depends what you're into. The Raid and The Night Comes For Us will always be in my Top 5.

What was?
A quick glance at movies from that year, the following are all better:

Good Will Hunting
LA Confidential
The Devils Advocate
Grosse Point Blank
Jackie Brown

And of course Con Air.

Edit: and Men In Black.

Shawshank redemption, American history X, Forrest Gump, just to mention a couple i'd rather watch 10 more times than Titanic one more time :)

There has to be at least 100 movies since Titanic that are much better. Maybe 200.

Just close your eyes, forget your name
Of course not it’s a dumb popcorn flick but it’s more enjoyable than Titanic.

You ignored my others.
Good Will Hunting is, erm, good, but I can't repeat watch indefinitely
Devil's Advocate, I have but haven't wathced all the way through so I will, but I got bored.
LA, Grosse and Jackie aren't for me although i have seen all. I don't have Grosse to watch again. Will buy as it's one I'd forgotten.

Titanic had stern competition in the category of 'best boat-based films of 1997' in the shape of Speed 2.
