Carrick testimonial | Sunday June 4th 14:30 BST

I hope they parade all the trophies and medals Carrick has won in front of Slippy G.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned but what determines who plays in a testimonial?

Is it the biggest names who Carrick has either played with or against throughout his career or is it just as big a name players they can get?

It’s basically whoever Carrick wants. Provided they are willing to play.

There's no hard and fast rule for giving a player a testimonial, it's just become custom for it to be after 10 years of service to a club. Traditionally they were designed to give the players an extra injection of funds upon their retirement, it's only changed in recent years now most players are exceptionally wealthy. Just think the game would hold far more meaning if they received after they more on from the club, just my Personal opinion.

Testimonials have been around for over 100 years.

In many cases it was five years service and the player agreed a league game with the directors and got a percentage of that games match revenue. Players who stayed ten years got two games. They were called 'benefit games'.

After the Second World War they were usually given to injured players and then became more regular in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

Some players refused a Testimonial in order to get favourable transfer terms like Darren Fletcher, while others chose a life pension like Shay Brennan.

In reality modern day players don't need money so many give it to charity like Carrick is doing. But let's be clear...modern day players aren't giving the charity their money necessarily...the fans are giving it when they turn up.

All credit to those players who do give it away and Carrick's Testimonial is well deserved.

Who do we think will be the managers? I'd guess Fergie will manage the '08 team but sure about the other. Harry Redknapp or somebody?

Wow, can't wait for this

Will be my first time back at OT since Fergie's last season, should be a good one.

He have served United long and faithfully. Every Manchester United supporter owes him thanks. But it is time for Carrick to put aside his slippers. It is time to rest and look back with pride for his many years of service. United have nothing but gratitude for his long service. We should offer him a job at MUTV which will prepare him for a career in punditry.

He's already been coaching our u-14s when he's been available iirc, he comes across the type that'll do well in coaching.

I must admit I was slightly underwhelmed when we first signed him and thought it seemed like a lot of money for the type of player he seemed to be. But, he's the sort of player that you only appreciate how good he is when you start watching him properly in your own team. What a signing he proved to be! Fully deserves this.

Can't say it isn't deserved, no matter who you support.

Madness to think he's been overlooked in England team selections for the past few major tournaments yet been an utter talisman for United. Just goes to show how naive England managers can be.

English football in a nutshell. Specialist midfielders overlooked in favour of all-action goal-scoring midfielders. It's even more baffling to think that Scholes England career suffered so Lampard and Gerrard could be (unsuccessfully) squeezed in to a 4-4-2. Thankfully Scholes caught on to that pretty quickly and stuck two fingers up at the England set-up long ago. Carrick should have done the same.

If anything specialist midfielders Owen Hargreaves, Gareth Barry and for some strange reason Scott Parker were keeping him out of the England 11.

That 08 team was the reason I became a United supporter. Brings back great memories. Can't wait and I hope Ronaldo plays somehow. But I doubt Madrid will allow it.

Fletcher, Brown and O'Shea probably definitely involved. Park Ji Sung probably maybe. Can not see Ronaldo, Tevez or Anderson involved in this and Hargreaves probably could not if he wanted to.

Would you count Hargreaves and Parker as specialist midfielders? Hargreaves was good, but it was often his boundless energy that made him effective. Scott Parker always struck me as a Danny Murphy type. Decent technique and good workrate, but doesn't really excel at anything specific.

Barry, I agree with, and a largely underrated player at his peak, though I'd still have Carrick over him.

Specialists probably was not the right word here. But, when they played in midfield for England they were definitely used as Defensive Midfielders.
