He may have thought it was just a body check on Gaston, saw the injury then realised he went in with his stoods up? Seems fairly reasonable to me

I really want Brighton to go up and that red basically put them out of the game but that was a red no doubt about it. Pity.

They've done this in previous years as well. They do it every year for the last away game.

It was excessive force and dangerous but it's kinda challenges you see almost every other game for a loose ball and Ramirez actually turned into the challenge.
Guess it's tough to argue considering the damage done as that definitely swayed Deane a lot but not sure it was clear cut.
Edit - Actually they had a altercation few minutes before which would have been a factor as well.
