I have searched for an existing thread on this but none found so here goes.

I am delighted that THE most important issue facing us; that being Climate Change has at least been brought to the public attention.
It is a pity that it had to be done by protest in London and other cities but the media have started to focus on it.
This isn't something that any of us can and should ignore.
So. Over to you.
What are your thoughts on this issue and what are you doing to either make it worse or reduce your carbon emissions.

As I am sure that someone as clever as you knows, there is far more to Climate Change than Global Warming.
Climate change has many causes although the rise in CO2 is a key issue, it is the disastrous effect on the Earth ecosystem as a result of human intervention on that very fragile thing that allows us all to be able to live on this small planet.

We classify humans as an intelligent species...
What kind of intelligent species would severely damage the incredibly thin atmosphere that we all have to breathe.
What kind of intelligent species would pollute the seas that we rely on for food.
What kind of intelligent species would not just carry on doing this in the clear knowledge of its consequences but actually increase that damage.
And what kind of intelligent species would pass on to its children the problem of dealing with that damage in the knowledge that that damage might well be irreversible.
 
I got to thinking much more seriously about this recently, not because of the protests but after a discussion/argument with my father-in-law who, I discovered, is a climate change denier. He also believes in chemtrails and that vaccines cause autism and cancer so shouldn't have been surprised really but found myself trying to reason with him on the basis that even if he didn't believe in man made climate change then surely trying to get people out of cars to reduce congestion and air polution plus getting people more active on bikes/walking etc. can't be a bad thing but he was having none of it. So came to the realisation that it's pointless debating it anymore and the focus should be on what practical action can be taken. I've never voted Greens before but they'll be getting my first preference in the upcoming local elections. With that in mind are there any good resources for information about what we can do/change in our day to day lives to reduce our CO2?

I don't - but choosing a protest method that could make people decide to drive to work instead of take public transport due to their actions seems a bit misguided, stupid or ironic.

The disruption is only likely to last for a short period of time but Climate Change is going to affect us all and our children and their children and their children's children and so on.

So how else would they have brought this vitally important subject into public attention in the way that they have.
 
Brought it to the public attention? It's been public attention for years. All they've done is disrupt the lives of everyday people who have no say whatsoever in what government policy is. The public has had enough of them now.

Thankfully, if they try anything at Heathrow they will be unceremoniously hauled away and locked up. The law is much harsher around airfields and the Met won't be feeling too lenient after this week.

Anyone watching The Facts about climate change with Attenborough on 1? Jeez for an intelligent species we are sure are stupid. It’s the biggest single thing facing us and our planet.

Very good graphic to reflect on that.

I liked Javid's statement about the protests causing disruption to the lives of others. Yeah thank feck Climate Change won't do eh Javid, no way you could reduce future disruption.

Brilliant. I watched it and boy was it hard hitting, which was exactly the right way to pitch it.
Even though I am in my late 60's I am appalled at the way we humans are damaging the only planet that we are able to live on and the legacy we are leaving for our children.

And it is the extremely short timescale that we have both done this terrible damage and have left to try to reduce its effects.
The earth has been here for 4.5bn years and humans for about 250000 years. But we have caused potentially irreparable damage in less than 100 years.
 
I’m really happy that the people advocating climate change are those with dyed hair seen in photos with multitudes of plastic bottles and packaging, t shirts and flags that have printed messages/slogans on them and are blocking bridges meaning vehicles will have to take longer routes.

Feck yeah climate change!

How will it do more harm than good? People will suddenly decide to spite them and start burning more carbon and throwing more plastic in the street?

I can sympathise with the people that have been affected around London, I live up north So it hasn’t affected me in the slightest. Whilst I agree with their message I’m not sure I do with the way they’re going about it. However, it has been done to highlight climate change and and get people to take notice and one way to do that is cause massive disruption. If it was just an organised protest in a park I suppose it wouldn’t get any air time. I dunno, I can see both sides.
 
Absolutely cringe level low iq takes as per usual from large chunks of the country on these protests. Complaining about shopping disruption and heading to work when we’re nearly at irreparable levels of damage to our planet.

Phew. That's a relief.
Climate change is not going to happen ladies and gentlemen. Donald Trump must be right then. It is all fake news and a money making scam. We can continue burning fossil fuels as much as we like and nothing bad is going to happen.
I always knew that all those clever climate scientists were wrong and the increased temperature is all lies.
And because some of these protesters have dyed hair obviously proves that point.
Now. I must go and check that the earth is still flat...

You have to laugh a little at that.

We drove into London today as we had an appointment we couldn't be late for when otherwise we would have got train and tube... Is that what they wanted?
Plus most of the folks I'm chatting to in London are so pissed off at the dirspution they are not supporting the protests even though the issue in general is one the support.
 
The whole anti-plastic revolution seems to have been largely kicked off by Blue Planet.

I reckon a proper Climate Change movement will need stoking from a major TV show/movie, rather than a protest. An Inconvenient Truth did a reasonable job of that a few years ago. Maybe Attenborough can do his bit again.

I don't think a bunch of smelly hippies stopping traffic is going to help in the long run, as much as I agree with their message.
 
You just know if some of the posters in this thread were around at the time of the civil rights movement they would have unhappy with it because it was an "inconvenience".

Very well said. Old saying. You can't make an omelette without breaking the eggs.
Any inconvenience now is going to pale into insignificance if we all carry on as we are.
That is for sure.

Agree with this.

Regarding the hypocrisy argument, to be honest unless you don’t believe in climate change we’re all hypocrites in some way or another.
 
Personally I think we should reduce focus on "climate change" at a macro level and start addressing it by specific issues. It usually get bogged into "scientific proof" demanded by idiots who can't accept the obvious.

We should just tackle it under
- Reduce pollution
- Reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
- Reduce exploitation of nature for profit. Think of future.

All these eventually add up to climate change, but now we have specific agendas which very few people can dispute the necessity.

In fairness, those responses are sort of what they want. It's about capturing attention and getting people talking. Even responses like 'string them up by their toes for disrupting my run to ASDA' have caused that person to think about why they've done what they did (even if it's to slag them off for it) and it's allowed a few thousand people to achieve front page headlines for several days.

Happy to see posts like this, I think people don’t care enough about the future. It’s a selfish way of living.
