Pythagoras Tactics

Tactical reinforcements:

Arjen Robben
and Oleg Blokhin will aim to pin back our opponent's fullbacks, Marcelo and Lahm, who are important in giving Pat Mustard his natural width and attacking support. Both Blokhin and Robben possess exceptional pace, so will be lethal in the space behind our opponent's backline. Both wing-forwards are experts at cutting in, possessing a dangerous combination of speed and dribbling skills. Both of them also demonstrated the defensive workrate to track back and cover for their overlapping fullback. Blokhin-Cole and Robben-Dani Alves are elite wing-duos who will overwhelm our opponent on the flanks. After losing possession, we will press the opponent, with the aim to regain the ball quickly and prevent a counter-attack. If this initial press fails we will quickly transition into a compact defensive shape (mid-block), to reduce space and overload the middle of the pitch.

Pat Mustard has a medley of creative attacking players, on and off the ball, so the signing of Claude Makélélé is key. Makélélé is the master of breaking up play, winning the ball back and then launching counter-attacks. His excellent positional sense and reading of the game will help to negate the clever movement of the opposition attack, intercepting passes from their playmakers. Makélélé is also supported by Matthäus and Van Hanegem in these tasks, a balanced and all-round trio, never allowing us to be outnumbered in the defensive phase.

Diego Godín is one of the most intelligent stoppers I've ever seen, so is a welcome addition to our highly disciplined and compact defence. His organisation of the back-line, expert positioning and aggression will make our defensive line even harder to break through and find space in. Elías Figueroa and Diego Godín are both exceptional man-markers, great in the air and composed on the ball, able to start counter-attacks from the back-line. Their skillsets and physical attributes complement each other.

Pat Mustard Tactics
  • Star player Zico is given a platform to shine in a familiar 4-2-2-2 shape. There's a wealth of quality on the ball in deeper areas which will ensure he gets plenty of time on the ball, and prodigious energy and movement from his partners in the forward line to utilise his vision, and create space for him to get into goalscoring positions.
  • A bit more onus onus on possession phases here as a defensive tactic, with the aim of frustrating Cruyff by depriving his team of the ball for protracted periods, but we'll go more direct at times too when the counter presents itself.
  • Defensive line will drop moderately deep out of possession as it fits our CBs playing styles better, and we'll adopt an aggressive mid-press, boosted by the immense work rate of Suarez and Tevez.
  • Neymar resumes his prodigiously productive partnership with Luis Suarez: they managed a combined 284 goals and assists in 124 matches together, assisting one another directly 40 times

Would it even be possible to get the ball off Rodri and Redondo?

Two really strong teams as I recall Suarez had a really good record against Godin's Atlético. Pythagoras has built a monster team too though, good drafting by both.

I actually think Pythagoras wins the midfield battle which is why I gave him the nod. That trio plus Cruyff dropping deep would be hard to deal with in that 4-2-2-2 setup.

Well played @Pythagoras . I was pretty much resigned to defeat here after failing to upgrade substantially. Holding Robben back for this round was an excellent decision as you were clearly much stronger this match.

Toyed with the idea of dropping Rodi into defence and subbing out Zico to go gung-ho mentalist high line/ high press, and I probably should have just to switch things up as I wasn't going to win anyway:

VDS
Lahm Rodri T. Silva Marcelo
Redondo
Reus Rooney Neymar
Tevez Suarez
