I've got a feeling Fergie will go for Darren Bent :nervous: i recall him saying he's looking for SPEED upfront, and we know Fergie would rather go for English players rather than foreign as he doesn't wanna turn into Arsenal  ther reasons too...

Would you be happy if we signed Bent?

Discuss.

for some reason I picture bent at liverpool, I don't know why but I cannot see him at united even though he's done well for charlton

Bent just wouldn't work. Just who the feck would have his name plastered over the back of their United tops?

Makes no marketing sense whatsoever.

Bent is a good player....nothing more.

Worth a punt at £6 million but for any of the top 4 it's gonna cost double that at least..........

Gone are the days where you can pick up low priced gems (Wenger generally does it with unknowns). I'd prefer spend £20+ million on a real world class player than half on a good one. We need that extra edge that only truly great players can provide.

Didn't Charlton turn down £18million from Westham for Bent?

I cant see them letting him go for only 10mill, He's English after all

As Charlton are relegated I wouldnt pay more than £5 million for him.

No

If we could get Bent on cheap, that would be better deal than for glass man - Saha...

It's true that he's quick but he's playing now for a shitty team and he cannot show his abilities in 100%.

If we sign Bent as a Smith or Solskjaer replacement - then it would seem a good move. But if we sign him as a first 11 player, ie as Saha's replacement - then it would be a step back IMO.

He's got 12 league goals this season and has been injured for much of it, he bagged 20 league goals last season...... someone tell me why he isn't good enough for us when he's getting that ratio at a struggling club like Charlton?

2 things are for sure though....

1- He'd cost shit loads even though Charlton are down 15 million minimum IMO
2- I've never ever seen SAF even remotely interested in him so chances of him coming are slim to none

Personally though he's been my choice for a good year now

I think he's a very good player. He scores loads for a shit charlton team who hardly create chances. At united there'd be more chances for him and I believe he'd score more. Definitely a more talented player than smith. Anything around 6-8 million and we should get him.

Another wind up
We all know he simply ain't good enough

Bullshit

I dont get it you all want to sign Nani and Huntelaar unproven players but you don't want to sign a proven EPL player in Bent who scores ton of goals for Charlton. I know they have loads of potential well so has Bent still in early 20's but I would not pay over 10mil for him.

Seen him a few times at charlton and he has allways impressed me,charlton are not the best team as has been shown this year but they try to play football and i see no reason why he couldn't make the step up.He has scored goals were ever he has played and this season like you have said has been injured for a few months atleast in total. The boy has pace has played up top on his own alot, can hold the ball up and a very good header and decent shot either foot.If we could could get him for anywere around 10-14 mill it'd be a good signing he is a better option than smith and solskjaer at the moment and young.

circumstances change. what signal would that send out to their fans if they sold their star turn and main source of goals to a relegation rival in january?

now they are in the championship, the money will dry up and they will cut their cloth accordingly. I reckon they will be able to take about £12 million for him.

it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could move to spurs to replace berbatov. :D

Agree with all that. Darren Bent is quality. The only thing that I doubt about him is that whether he has the mentality to handle the pressure of playing for United.

Yep that's the only real stumbling block, but one as you know can only be proven given the chance. It's a risk i must say but i think the chances are in his favour and he might surprise a few people.

I wonder how Bent would go in a team that employs a tactic that isn't simply - 'play it to Bent.'

Mind you the extra quality around him would certainly help his development. Would be a handy signing for around the $12 million mark.

Bent will cost upwards of 12 million, he will be the 'big name forward' if he comes to the club
I doubt it. Bent won't surpass 12 million and we bought Saha for 12 million and he has been on the bench ever since. Bent will only be bought to replace Saha. A big name striker will be bought regardless of Saha's fate. And it certainly won't be Bent who will fit that description...

Bent will cost less than 10m now that Charlton are relegated

would not be surprised if he goes to Everton, Newcy or Sunderland

We are not going to spend 12 million on Bent, sell Saha and spend a further 20 million on a second striker. Theres room in the first 11 for a front line forward, between Rooney, Giggs, Scholes and Rossi there'll be plenty of players to play off that man.

We are signing a 20 million pound lead the line forward whether you like it or not and that player won't be Bent. Bent will only be signed if we sell Saha and only as Saha's replacement and will probably cost us as much as Smith cost us.

After all if Saha leaves we will still have only 1 lead the line striker once we sign Ruud's big name replacement. So we would still need another center forward and don't tell me Smith is such. Because he has never been and will never be a top class lead the line forward...
