David De Gea

Even if you feel it was the wrong decision to get rid of him, bringing players back hardly ever works. Too much water under the bridge. Move on.

Thats fair. Onana, however, was a calamitous buy. Whoever was doing our transfers that summer (Hojlund, Onana, Mount et al) was clearly clueless.

Insane is the word. ETH really wanted Mount but he should have been told we weren't spending more than 15m max on a player who's contract was almost up. Hojlund was just stupid money, he was set up to fail. The less said about Onana/DeGea the better. That was just bungled. People say Kane would have cost us stupid money but I thing we could have gotten him and good competition for DeGea's for what we wasted on these three.

From my memory this seems like a be careful what you wish for type situation.

De Gea set the bar so very high at his best, that when he dropped from so obviously, we all thought it's time to move on and find the next high bar. Yet we didn't think how hard it might be to do so.

As it happens Onana has made a bunch of horrendous errors and constantly parries into strikers feet. De Gea made errors, but did not have this stupid parry issue.

With this knowledge, if you offered me the two alternatives at the end of his contract, I choose Dave.

Aside from performance, we did do the right thing with his contract demands though. A bit shady to withdraw and offer less mind you, but there you go.

What I can't believe, is that David was apparently only on £19,230 per week with Fiorentina. This is a crazy wage drop despite his year out.

So he went from rejecting whatever it was we were eventually offering him...to that relative pittance.
