Day 20: Brazil vs. Colombia

Are people forgetting Webb's performance in the 2010 final? People only rate him because he refuses to make the tough decisions.
Say what you want about Webb, but he's one of the best refs out there.

These are the type of games where Radamel Falcao could have made a difference.

It was going to be tough for Colombia to defeat the top teams without him.

You're not allowed to challenge the keeper when he's kicking out of his hands (ie he's deemed to be in control of the ball until he kicks it). It's a silly rule but Silva fouled him anyway.
I don't really think it's silly, considering the injury risk associated with it, especially pulled/torn muscles when the ball is nicked away as the goalkeeper's dropping it. Think the yellow is for dangerous play in those situations, actually.

Er, you do know Webb showed 14 cards in the last Final and had one of the highest card counts this tournament in the Brazil v Chile game, right? And made some great and bold calls last game ?

The ref didn't do his job today, far to often let Brazil away with yellow cards. Didn't give a booking to Brazil until it was their 42nd foul in the game i believe. That is just ridiculous and he should never be near a Top competition ever again.

Bollox - the advantage is all with the keeper being able to run with the ball in his hands and decide to kick or not. Once he lets it go from his hands it's in play IMO.

It's part of the rules though, it was a foul and a yellow.

This match was an utter disgrace. I can't recall any game with this many cynical fouls, blatant cheating and underhand dirtiness. If he had been assigned this game, Howard Webb would have probably handed out 15 yellow and 5 red cards.

You might remember a game between England and Northern Ireland where Best did that to Banks and had the goal ruled out.

in their game vs Chile they kicked just as much... even more i would say. Webb let the kicking continue just like pretty much every ref so far.

and people were calling him a fanny with that challenge
They were being silly Zuniga hit him very hard with his knee (straight red). It's down to the ref allowing numerous Brazilian fouls to go uncarded. Payback time.

The thing I'm annoyed most about is that he gave poor James Rodriguez a fecking Yellow Card for a fairly tame slide-challenge, after the lad had been getting kicked up and down the field... I'd have been livid if that was me!

How Fernandinho didn't get booked... it'll forever be one of life's great mysteries.
Fernandinho got away with more cynical ones against Chile too.

I thought it was a good goal at the time. If the ball isn't in the keeper's hands, it should be fair game for a forward.
From memory (which is a bit fecked) FIFA were trying to speed the game up when they changed the rules. Firstly they stopped the pass back to the keeper. Then they decided that forwards couldnt impede the keepers ability to release the ball which is why players are supposed to drop off a bit. Not sure if its been a good change that last one.

and people were calling him a fanny with that challenge
I've been shocked at times with people arguing that Brazil are getting the decisions, forgetting that Neymar has been getting murdered by the defenders from the start of the tournament.

I don't like either Brazil or Neymar, but he was getting slaughtered in this WC. Gutted for him.

Watched a recording of the game, I think people are going over the top about Fernandinho, I didnt see any malice in his challenges. Some looked bad, but you could make a case either way on whether he meant it.

There's a very good reason why interfering with a keeper's punt is a straight booking: if it goes badly you can break his leg.

It's unsporting and stupid anyway. It's never going to save you from being scored on.

Colombia have scored more and conceded less than Brazil so far, while Brazil have come through the tougher tests. I can't call it, either way, it could be a showdown between the two countries' young stars, a storming game from a less fashionable name, penalties, anything. I'm just so excited.

One left-field prediction I will make is that the young star for whoever gets through will go on to get the golden boot - i.e., James Rodriguez or Neymar. I know everyone is predicting Messi, but they have as good a chance as any, IMO.
Who needs a voodoo witch when you have me to jinx everything and everyone possible?

Neymar out of the WC with a broken back. Fractured vertebrae in his lower back. Zuniga's a proper butcher. Hope he's out of the country already or he might not make it.

If the ref had dealt out some cards to both teams earlier then this might not have happened.
