Another season loan, talented keeper but a big step up to come to United. It's the crunch part of the season, he should have done better with some of the goals he's conceeded recently. More experience needed for the next step up.

A lot of the Dean Henderson fans got a reality check today. It's a big step up playing for United vs Sheffield. Could be the next Tim Howard.

I think another season loan was the likely outcome anyway.

That was a poor choice to come out there and showed a bit of a lack of awareness of where his defence was perhaps. I would suggest it's a perfectly normal mistake for a young keeper to make though and something he'll be bollocked by the coaches for and improve on.

If he has a full year of greatness then we can decide if he will get some games over Romero. As it stands Romero is much better than him and DDG is in another universe compared to henderson.

This guy loses his mind playing for Sheffield. Imagine if puts on the United shirt in a semi final of the champions league. This guy would be shitting bricks. Sell this guy. He's not good enough. Simple as that.

You sound like one of those weird fan accounts on Twitter, those cringe ones where the profile picture is of one of the players and they come out with really far out, hyperbolic assessments of players.

I still think the best thing for him is to stay out on loan. People forget this is the first year in the premier league where players are a little more cuter. For example in L1 or even the Championship its most likely the player in Ceballos position crosses it so he still needs some more experience but his talent is clear just not ready for United atm.

I don’t believe that Bayern Munich etc were/are really after him. At the moment he’s a decent Premier League shot-stopping goalkeeper (like 80% of them have been over the last 30 years). He might end up being good enough for United but not sure it’ll be next season. He seems to have some of the same problems Hart/Pickford have.

Why to rush with him? He has contract, DDG has contract. Henderson can play for SU next two years and then we can decide is he good to be our no1 or no2.
Or we can sell him for 50-60 mil to Chelsea and buy Sancho ;)

Hahaa I love this place. DeGea is finished because he has made some mistakes he was never a good keeper and Henderson is the greatest English talent ever . One mistake from Henderson and he needs to stay on loan at Sheffield because the Cafe has just discovered he's also shite .
Sorry I forgot DeGea is no longer shite he's now brilliant again and should be our number one for 10 more years .

Have you seen him lose his mind the last two weeks? Against Newcastle and Arsenal.

Generally speaking (and maybe I'm just bruised by the memory of the Tim Howard and Roy Carroll jobshare era) I prefer an older goalie, like what Van der Sar was when we signed him. Someone who has been around the block, has a lot of experience and will be better set mentally to cope with the pressure that comes with being United keeper. I think Henderson needs to spend a bit more time in the oven before he's ready to be talked about as United number one.
I think generally you’re right. Let them make their mistakes somewhere else and come to the club ready. Henderson is at least 2 years off being really ready (if he ever will be). Alisson went to Liverpool age 25 (I think). He’s got a good 8-10 years left potentially. There’s not much value in buying much younger as there are so many variables and influences on younger keepers.

Stop generalising.

Treat human beings on their own merits.

Race and nationality shouldn't come into it.
That's a bit rich given a few posts back you stated "You're overrating De Gea because he's Spanish" anyway he is not ready yet and has time on his side.

Different people stating different things. Hyperbole at the extreme. De Gea has been on the decline for a long time though. Since the world cup he has not been the same.

Would it be fair to say that even if Henderson isn’t ready to step up, De Gea is about ready to step down?

It's not been one mistake, he should've done better against Newcastle in his last league game. It's the pressure part of the season and Sheffield United are starting to fall away. De Gea should be questioned about his performances, it's a huge decision we have to make. It's not classic muppetry, it's questioning if Henderson is ready for the step up of pressure.

I get the argument that may be De Gea is not performing well. But to say Dean Henderson is the answer is simply a joke. He is English and naturally he gets hyped up by the press. I still remember when Ronaldo was in the final years for us, most pundits including Neville saying Rooney was the better player. The media in this country are funny. And people believe this media too much.

Sure. I come with no agenda since I’m neither English nor Spanish. I will clarify again. People are jumping on every opportunity to diss on De Gea. Which can be a bit harsh but a fair sentiment in absolute.

What bothers me is the relative comparison with Henderson and the declarations that he is ready to become United’s No.1. Which is why I’m posting in this thread. If he is, then he should be judged on the same standards on which De Gea is and mistakes such as today wouldn’t have been acceptable for a United keeper.

The sane opinion is that he should spend some more time proving whether he can become our long term number one. As things stand, the decision whether to replace De Gea with him should be at least a season away.

All of that is fine.

What isn't fine is leveraging a player's family background as a reason to view him differently from his peers.

Maybe the same people on those sides of the debate still hold the same opinion and you happen to see the ones critical of Henderson because he made a mistake today. Just a thought.

Well then, everyone has got a reality check? Good.

Let the fella develop and get better than De Gea first and then we can talk.

Tomasz Kuszczak looked like immense for WBA. Some stunning saves. Came to United and nowhere near good enough. Tim Howard. Ben Foster. Barthez. There is a long list of fantastic keepers who just didn’t cut at United.

He has been better for the last two years in terms of his performances.
People hope that De Gea shall find his form again, but noone knows.

Looks as though he’s got a bit more to do to get up to standard. I’m still confident he will but our fans would crush him if he came in and made a mistake. Could be a career ender for him.

Good call from the management/Ed In signing DDG to a longer term contract.

It is the hypocrisy that is being called out here. If De Gea makes an error, people want him out because we apparently have an obvious first choice ready when he is clearly not. People rush to justify Henderson’s mistakes but refuse to do the same for De Gea who has more than earned that.

And with regards to your careless nationalism based comments, are you actually refuting the fact that English players are overhyped and overpriced in the Premier League?
Our players aren't hyped anymore than any other nations players. It's just that our language is the universal language of the world so there's far more opinions that are heard hence opinions like yours.

Of course he's still young and relatively inexperienced but the 'worrying' thing is that both the late Arsenal goal and the Newcastle (where his defender miskicked the ball) was 'simple' positioning errors.

Both were near post finishes. Against Arsenal, I don't think it was a bad decision to come out and block the shot but he shouldn't have launched himself (i.e get airbourne) at that shot. You need to close the space, stay grounded and keep your feet together to block anything along the floor cause there's no way any other shot could have gone in. Against Newcastle, his feet was too slow to shuffle across and again close the space.

I've admitedly not watched many games so now I am obviously going to make an unjust comparison here...but It's a bit Foster/Pickford/Hart/Robinson-esque in that he has very good shot stopping ability and reactions but too gung ho with the 'saving' aspect and neglecting protecting his angles etc. The issue is that this is not something you can readily learn unless you have a great goalkeeping coach/manager nurturing the fundamentals.

On the one hand, I wouldn't mind if he came back to Utd as the undisputed no.2 and get to learn/compete with De Gea. It's one of those 'you don't know until you do', so perhaps he would thrive on the pressure and up his game even more. Maybe his (elite?) confidence can help him here. Sometimes it's about your approach and mentality as much as your base skillset..

Then on the other, it certainly wouldn't hurt for him to have another year out on loan.

Genuine question:
1) How many games have the lot of you actually watched him play?Apart from the bloopers and highlight reels?
2) How many mistakes will he be allowed to make before people start wanting De Gea back in goal, like when Rashford had a bad patch and was called championship level.

Compare de gea's 1st season in the premier league to Hendersons 1st (albeit in a less pressured environment). Henderson has had a far better campaign however, does that mean he's ready to be our 1st choice? Most definitely not. Let's not forget the amount of people who were writing de gea off as a dud early doors and look how he turned out. As others have already stated, both of these guys are ours. No need for some knee jerk reaction depending on whether de gea makes a balls up in his next game or Henderson the same. We've got more pressing issues than worrying about our no 1 goalkeeper at the moment.
