I'm happy if Johnsen stays fit, and I'm confident about O'Shea, but have to say, I'm not inspired by Wes. Brilliant start to his career, but prior to his injury he seemed to have faded a bit and not lived up to early promise.

Johnsen is 33 and very injury proned. Wes Brown has still some way to go before being considered as a true world class defender. When our team is full of stars who worth tens of millions pound in the midfield and up front, we should have at least one or two defender at the back who are at the same level. Ask any club who will want to spend 10 million to buy one of our defenders? There is certainly none. It is an indirect way to show you that we need something more at the back.

I'm a little confused about all this talk about our 'defensive problems'. There is no doubt that up to December, we were having problems, but look at our record over the past 22 games compared to what is supposedly the best defence in the premiership............i'll stick the goals scored column in as a matter of interest.

Man Utd....
Played..22
Goals against..19
Goals for..59

Liverpool....
Played..22
Goals against..17
Goals for..33

Comparing these 2 records, which would you prefer?????? ;) ;)

You should have named this topic FAO Itchy.

He thinks we need 8 new defenders.

And Arsenal's densive record.

The problem is more simple than obsessing over Liverpool. We let 2 in against Derby and 3 against West Ham. We won't be able to be so profligate against the Real Madrids and Barcelonas.

Perhaps we should sign 4 bricklayers to play in defence, they could then build a brick wall in front of the goal.....thats the only way to guarantee not letting in goals. Welcome to the world of Man Utd. ;)

Here's Arsenals by the way....

Played..22
Goals against..24
Goals for..42

I thank yew. :p

Just to add the these stats, clean sheets over the 22 game run are as follows........

Man Utd..9
Liverpool..11
Arsenal..4

Now could someone please explain these defensive problems we keep hearing about? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

No doubt we have got better. But conceding three against West Ham is worrying - no use pretending otherwise. We do need to tighten up. We'll be meeting teams with better defences than West Ham's - and until we do start beating our main rivals, we can't be complacent.

And if it's still down to individual errors still - well, that's just as worrying.

If it's Europe you are worried about, let's look at the second phase group stages....

Of the 16 teams involved, Only Bayern Munich had a better defensive record than Man Utd, They conceded 2, we conceded 3.........Let's all try to be a little more possitive eh, cos' things aint as bad as Pundits will have you believe.
Try looking at the facts over a period of time instead of higlighting a certain game when we conceded a few goals but STILL won the game.

more concise,

8 new defenders: Only young goodlooking Italians need apply. Scruffy old Frenchmen need not.

1 new attacker:

2 new midfielders: A Giggs & Keane that will be happy on the bench.

1 new goalkeeper: Someone better than the man who has won it all bar the FA cup

1 new assistent manager: Hitzfield or Capello

4 new coaches: Ditto

1 new tea lady: Jamioe Oliver perhaps ;)

1 new pitch: Hand sewn by naked exotic beauties

Hes also wants a new stadium but doesnt want to ask for too much. ;)

Over a period of time? You conveniently chose 22 games.

Why you only list out the stat in the recent 22 matches, when we were facing relatively easier opponents during this period? You should see thing as a whole and list the stat for the whole season!

And it is really, really amazing that there are so many people who think our defence don't need to add any new player. If we didn't win anything this season I can say it is because our defence was playing too badly in the first half of the season which cost us the title. And why we lost to Bayen in CL last season? -- defence. Why we lost to Real in CL two seasons ago? -- defence. Yet some people never learn from history. Tactically navie people always think that "attack" is everything for this team, and they become content quickly when our defence didn't leak too many goals in a certain period when we play against mainly weaker opponents.

If we really lost the title this season, or if we are beaten by Deport again because of poor defending or any defensive error, hope people such as roxyfella, Murt etc. won't be so thick skin to come back and say we need to get a new defender in the summer!

"Go away asshole". A stuning argument which sums up your abilty to analyse the situation.

I read your thread. Picking out sections of the CL or EPL will no doubt explain everything if we end up without a trophy at the end of season.

Seasons have to be seen as a whole.
