I'd go with 4-5-1 away

- - - - - - - - Fab - - - - - - - -
Gazza - - Ronny - Larry - - Micky
Bex - Seba - Keano - Butty - Giggsy
- - - - - - - -Ruud- - - - - - - -

with Nicky dropping back between the mf and cb's.

and 4-4-2 at OT

- - - - - - - Fab - - - - - - -
Gazza - Ronny - Larry - Micky
Bex - Seba - - Keano - Giggsy
- - - - Ruud - - - Ole - - - -

depending on the score from the 1st leg of course.

If we lose out there, then it's a 4-4-2 at OT no doubt but, if we can get a 1-1, 2-2 or better still, a win, I might plump for the 4-5-1 at home too ...

If it's 0-0 at the Raizor, I'm not sure how I'd play it at home, probably start with 4-5-1 then go for the jugular if it's still 0-0 after 70 mins ...

I think we'd be more effective with him in front of the back four. Keano, although considered a defensive mf, is much more adept at getting up and down the field and if Scholesy was in there, he'd have too much to do.

Right now it's a toss-up between Seba and Scholesy but I'm leaning toward Seba because of his skill. With Nicky playing deeper I think Seba will be a little more comfortable.

Hmmmm at the end of the day you're leaving out Scholes for an inferior player in Butt..

As well as Butt may have played this season still seems a bit weird to me..

You, more than anyone, should understand the logic in that, as it seems like you would pick Donkey for Liverpool. That would mean leaving out better players than him

I want Scholes in, but for Seba, not for Butt. So your point of leaving a player out for an inferior player in Butt stands ;)

I think we learned the lesson of 4-5-1 & 4-1-4-1 and I don't think we need to give it a shot one more time.

We know for a fact that Deportivo La Coruna is a team that plays simple football and one touch passes to build up an attack. That's how they beat us twice and that's how they destroyed Arsenal at Highbury. However, they can still be beaten.

The midfield needs to be as solid as ever and we need to capitalize on every chance we get.

I'd go 4-4-2 away & home honestly and it will definetly be Scholes since Veron is very doubtful to make it.

Let's win it now

D la C are a very good counter attacking team and Scholesy has a tendancy to be too far forward when our attacks breakdown. Nicky is more of a deeper player thus, he isn't often out of position when possession changes.

I wouldn't pick my team for the away game solely on individual ability due to the tactics that need to be played. I do think Scholesy is a better player than Nicky but Nicky is more suited to the role I'd like one of our midfielders to play.

I would like to see Veron playing the anchor role. Apparently he does it brilliantly for Argentina.
With a midfield of Giggs, Bex, Keane & Scholes we would have a good chance of scoring. The secret of 1999's succes was our ability to score goals away from home and i think well have to go to Spain with the aim of a score draw rather than a no score draw.
Problem is that we cant expirement any more in the league so unless we do a 442 its an unknown risk.

He does do it brilliantly for Arg' but it's more of a deep creating role than an 'oh feck, here they come' role. Ideally, I'd love to see this ...

- - - - - - - - Fab - - - - - - - -
Gazza - - Ronny - Larry - - Micky
- - - - - - - - - - Butty - - - -
- - - Seba - - - - - - - - - - -
Bex - - - - - - - - Keano - - Giggsy
- - - - - - - -Ruud- - - - - - - -

Nicky becomes the Hamman type and Seba drops deep to recieve the ball and start things off, this should give him more time on the ball thus enabling him to play the more incisive pass. Also, with Nicky playing deep, it should give Micky & Gazza a little more freedom to get forward to support Giggsy & Bex.

Whatever, I'm sure Depor will have their own tactics for us to contend with and Fergie will probably play both Seba & Scholesy anyway.
Problem is that we cant expirement any more

Agreed, Fergie wont start anything new now and he shouldn't. I just see it how I see it and jot it down here ;)

As long as we go through, I couldn't care less what happens tbh

Although I agree, I can't see Veron doing it at this stage in the season. Keano's always been the one who dropped off to collect the ball from defence, although Blanc has come more and more into midfield, which is what we really need :)
The point was made that we'll have to watch for their tactics too. Couldn't agree more. Bayern did it to devastating effect last near and enough said about the pool the better.
I just hope we have a nice tactical innovation like the one against Bayern at Trafford last season, where Giggs was let loose (although he didn't quite manage to pull it off).

Sorry mates...........But the 4-4-2 works for me home and away. Don't fix what's not broken. Look how well we are playing now.........keep it rolling. Any chink in the armor will cause us to derail. A win is a win is a win.......roll on UNITED!

Although I love Scholes I believe against sides like Deportivo and Real madrid we will need Veron's unique skills to break them down. I think Butt stands up to challanges better and is a better defender. Scholes will be vital against Liverpool or Bayern and should get the nod then. Either way we are spoilt in the midfield and hopefully SAF gets the team selection right

Scholes scored away to Inter in the QF the year we won the treble, and he has a good record of scoring away goals in europe...i think there will not be more than one goal between the teams after the two legs, and an away goal in La Coruna could be crucial. Scholes to start in the away game.

Good point, mate. An away goal is crucial for us, if we remmeber how we lost some of the quad final in previous years. A 1-1 or 2-2 draw in Spain should be our target, if we achieve that our home game will be much more easier.

Well, in the team selection part, I don't think Butt will be selected ahead of Scholes if there is no injury problem anyway. A 4-5-1 with both Keano and Butt play will be too defensive.
