In Marcus Rashford's report card as a young boy he mentioned Devonte Redmond as the best of the age group.
Feel sorry for the lad, being told in advance I would have thought would be a given. Best of luck in his career. Anyone know who was in his age group?
That is horrible you’d expect better.
After that kid took his life after being released by City, i thought the authorities would wake up and make sure there was an official protocol of how these things are handled and the support they need to be given.
That's terrible, there needs to be a much healthier system put in place. That's enough to give anyone PTSD.
Wonder why we would not have the decency to at least tell the player that he was being released, before going to the press with the list.
I would imagine the managers and people handling these kids were telling them and their parents/guardians if the kids (for underage players) were not going to make it. It will not hurt to have a feedback every 6 or 12 months for every kid.

This is old news. He was released back in 2018
Devonte Redmond was 21 years 9 months when he was released. His final season under contract involved going out on loan to Scunthorpe in League One, playing 1 min in the League and a few starts in Cup competitions, having the loan cancelled in January, then making 10 starts for the U23 team that got relegated at the end of that season.
Surely it was blindingly obvious to all concerned that United were not going to offer him a new contract. Did he want a personal meeting with Mourinho to give him the news ? Or a nice letter from the club thanking him for helping to get the U23 team relegated ?

As good a point as you're making, in Devonte's case wasn't he released two years before Wisten's suicide?
Also, this (Devonte finding out on twitter) was reported in April, so not sure why it is making headlines 8 months later.

Someone posted it on the United Reddit today which is where @MyOnlySolskjaer might have seen it.
He would of been with players like McT, Chong, Angel Gomes, James Wilson being the ones who played for the first team and others like Laird, Mitchell who are close.
I think the academy in that period was a bit of a shambles - McClair seemed to have lost his grip a bit and Butt had to try and revamp everything. I would hope that Nick Cox and Butt between them are now handling things like this much better but who knows. In fact tbh even if the released kid is a little scrote I'd still expect his U16/18 coach or whoever to give him a call to tell him he's being released at minimum. Ideally they'd even get a memento and some kind of continuing care from the club.
But harsh. The lad isn’t saying he deserved a contract, just some human decency in being told directly that he was being released.

If that contract was up then it should have come as no surprise if he wasn't asked about renewing it in advance. If he wasn't then may be he should have asked about it. No point moaning about it after.

If you were being fired or not having your contract renewed at work, would you expect to be told by your boss or one of your mates on WhatsApp?
At the end of the day its just business. If there are 30 lads to be released, should Nicky personally contact each and every one of them? Granted, they should have been notified somehow before publicizing the list, but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal. He seems more upset at the way his career turned out, rather than being bitter about how it happened.
Was his contract up or was his contract terminated? If his contract was up and the club hadn't offered him anything, I think that's enough of a hint that he was being let go.
Why would anyone working on a time-bound contract basis be shocked once their contract has expired if there was no offer for renewal earlier? Unless you are saying the club gave him hope and then pulled the rug from under him.
The only shocking thing around this is a 22 year old player not knowing his contract is up and that he hasn't been offered a new one.

More likely wouldn't you try to find out if your contract is near expiry and not being renewed, rather than sit and hope? If you are doing the latter, is it your employer's fault?

Seen this lad around my gym several times, certainly dedicated to fitness but maybe like so many, he was excellent as a youth but didn't develop.
Disgraceful leadership at the club. You should have the decency to tell a player that their services are no longer required and give them notice as well. I think Rio said something similar - he didn't even know in what turned out to be his final game whether he was staying or not.
