They are evidently both premier league level.

Do we need an upgrade? Yes absolutely. AWB isn’t just a good one on one defender he’s freakish the tackles he can make. Dalot is a bit of an all rounder but good pro.

Neither are maybe ideal starting United level although I do feel AWB’s talents have their place at almost any club when your defending a lead.

He only has to make those tackles because his positioning and defensive nous is so poor. No defender should have to dive in to such tackles as much as he does. Defending a lead with a guy with such a poor overall defensive skillset is not a good idea, even when he was playing "well" he was still at fault for several goals particularly against Arsenal and City.

Yeah that's nonsense.

That's why it's hard to take any posts seriously when things like "not a PL quality" is spouted so randomly and in most threads.

That's your opinion. Mine is they aren't good enough. I highly doubt many PL teams would be in for them if they were put up for sale.

AWB was one of the best player for Palace when we signed him, both of them easily walk into more than 50% PL teams without any issue.

This is the problem with most arguments, either world class or not PL level.

With all due respect, saying both of them are not PL level is just dumb thing to say. Are you going to tell Maguire is also not PL level?

Maguire is, but I'd say lower half.

Those two aren't, they don't offer enough in an attacking sense for stronger teams and aren't good enough defensively for weaker teams.

Which teams would take them?

I’m starting to question how much better is his attacking compared to AWB. He flatters to deceive.
He is a con artist and always fools us into thinking, he is doing better than he is actually done.
Defensively we are seeing his gradual progression but that’s to be expected, he is still young for a defender.

It isn't better at all, it's the opposite if anything. You'll barely see him make the effort to make an overlap to help Antony out and even if he was in that position he still can't cross the ball to save his life. His main contributions to attack are pumping balls down the channel and standing outside the opposition box screaming for the ball and then proceeding to hoof it over the bar if he gets it.

I understand where you're coming from. His crossing is poor, and while he often gets into some promising advanced positions it's rare anything comes from them.

That said, where he's much better than AWB is in his passing and movement in the central parts of the pitch. In the first half of the season he was superb at switching play with first time passes and he was important to how we moved up the pitch. AWB simply doesn't have that in his locker. Unfortunately Dalot seems to have stopped doing that now which has left me a bit confused.

I do think he's a more balanced all round footballer than AWB but it's fair to say neither of them are major attacking threats, hence Frimpong.

Most of non top 7 teams.

You think all other FBs in PL offer good attacking threat and sound defensively?

Nope.

But I think these two could very easily be replaced with better players and we wouldn't see them going to another PL club and being a success.

AWB would quite obviously be a success in any of the non top 6/7 sides
Dalot is just rubbish so I agree there

AWB was already a successful RB for Palace, so yeah you are already wrong there.

He's played in two of our biggest away games in recent weeks (Liverpool and Newcastle) and has effectively done nothing to suggest he's a viable long-term option for us at RB and yet AWB is the one supposedly put up for sale. Joke.

Give your head a wobble. AWB was one of the most highly rated young defenders in the PL when we bought him. Of course he’d get another PL team.

same with Dalot - he’s young and has good potential. Had a good loan at Milan and has been good but inconsistent for United. Not uncommon with young players. Again he’s find a PL side no problem

Even they wouldn't take him back, laughed a the way to the bank with that 50m.

Highly rated by who? People who watched YouTube highlights of slide tackles or people who actually watched Palace games?

I suggest you go back and watch football matches, specifically Palace matches from the season before we bought him.

your narrative that he wouldn’t get another PL team is frankly ridiculous

I watched plenty. Didn't see anything special then, still don't see it now. Total waste of money and would be lucky to get 10-15 of that 50m back.

Can't see any PL team spending that on him when they can get a better player elsewhere for less.

We will see who is correct, should he depart United

It's been going back and forth this season, but currently Dalot is the one more in danger of being sold in the summer imo. He is offering nothing in attack and is really passive in defence.

Especially if rumours of Frimpong, who is a very attacking RB and basically a midfielder, are true. Who would you keep, if you had to keep one, to balance out the RB options? I reckon despite his aerial weaknesses and lapses of concetantion AWB is still the better defender overall. Dalot is just too passive and easily beaten.

He'll probably be benched and end up on loan in the championship within a year or 2.

Dalot will probably end up at one of the Turkish teams.

That's how I see it happening, time will tell.

He was good enough to displace Cancelo in the Portugal team in the World Cup so hoping he can get back to that level. Maybe the injury is still affecting him in ways we don't know about. That's what I'm hoping for anyway.

Before the World Cup everyone here was praising him like mad, including me, and he was looking fantastic in combination with our other defenders. It’s hard not to notice his fall off since then though and when you consider AWB resurgence, and apparently as we are chasing Frimpong hard, you’d have to suggest AWB would be the better choice in staying because he’s better defending, and Frimpong is a much better attacking FB than Dalot

I’d keep them both and sign Frimpong, Dalot can play Left or right back as well SSD wing back AWB could easily play right CB in a 3 man defence. We need 9 defenders 4 Cbs 5 WB’s FB’s and at least 3/4 from 9 defenders being Home Grown ;
Defenders next year ; *Frimpong(HG), AWB(HG),D Dalot, T Mallacia, L Shaw (HG), R Varane, L Martinez, , *K Min Jae, M Guehy (HG) or G inacio, T Mengdi(HG)

We Could sell E Bailey(10) A Teles (8) B Williams(7), V Lindeloft (30), H Maguire (35), Release P Jones , A Tuanzebe. We could generate £75-90m here and spend £100M on three New defenders. We would also upgrade our defence and reduce our wage bill for the defence from £1.7m per week to £1.4m with these smart changes.

Marsella won't pay the 7M buy clause for Bailly yet you think we can sell him for 10M.

Nevermind Lindelof for 30M and Maguire for 35M.

Pre World Cup Dalot was excellent, one our best performers.

Since then he has failed to recapture that form.

Fortunately for us Wan Bissaka has come in and been great

Didn't have much to do defensively and did nearly gift them the goal but looked more comfortable at left back than he has done at right back recently.

He should be starting ahead of Malacia at left back at the moment.

At his best games he looks like such a smart and tactically astute player, I wonder where that goes when he has one of his semi-regular mares. Great performance tonight and it's nice to see him score his first PL goal for us — I'm pretty sure he hit the post at least a few times, it's been a long time coming.
